What are the differences between the Leech & Rigdon version and the standard version of the 1851 cap and ball revolvers?

I guess current reproductions for sake of conversation, obviously not looking for an original L&R!

Thanks. Didnt even notice the difference in barrel.

I'm kicking around the idea of getting a 36 cal colt design (will be my first) and looking hard at the 51's. May wait until the supply comes back a bit. Everything seems high right now.

For me the csa made revolvers are interesting. A lot of them are "rare" as far as originals go because many of the factories were unstable and production was low. In the case of this one they moved around a bit. From what I understand less than 1500 of these were made under the Leech & Rigdon name and later Rigdon Ansley.

I am a Pietta 1851 Navy .36 "parts changer" insofar as I want to create Confederate replicas using Pietta off the shelf parts. I have done that with an Augusta Machine Works and a Columbus Firearms Manufacturing Company.

My Pietta L&R (which Pietta has never marketed):

Just changing parts using a Pietta 1851 Navy .36 as a base donor using a Pietta G&G part round/part octagon barrel/ plain cylinder and better wood.

Regards,

Jim

And out of stock! Good looking gun I like the round barrel. I am wanting another Confederate brass frame 44 cal Navy.

Nothing really...just that it has a round barrel like a dance or griswold

Incorrrect. Kid, you do good work on guns but your historicity is severely lacking insofar as the G&G and other Confederate revolvers. Stick to what you know. If you want a history lesson I will fill you in. PM me.

Regards,

Jim

I'm a parts changer too. Got one made up exactly like this.

Don't know why but I have always had a passing interest in Confederate revolvers, most notably the Leech and Rigdon, Griswold and Gunnison, and the Spiller and Burr replicas.

Fill us in, Expat.

I'm a Reb gun fan. I have a Pietta Griswold in .36 (naturally) from EMF 2011 and wish it had a steel frame. Then it would be a L&R and could shoot some stout loads. Limited as it is, it's still a great shooter and looks nice. I like Confederate revolvers.

Mr expat with all do respect i am sticking to what i know. Hes asking about the reproduction revolvers..not originals. Theyre using the same parts and frames. Ive worked two recently and they arent any different aside from the barrels. So please...enlighten us with how the REPRODUCTIONS are different in parts as that is all the OP is asking about. They have same frame, same hand, same bolt, same trigger guard back strap, same EVERYTHING but the barrel. Im a very respectful guy and kind to all... but please dont come at me sideways or tell people to stick to what they know. There are polite and respectful ways to correct people. No history lesson needed as the OP is only asking about current repros.

Ooo did want to add...the customer had 2 L&R guns (and a dance)...one had roll marked cylinder and the other didnt and thats how they came and only 2 years apart manufacture date..he also did state he was ordering a blank cylinder from a retailer as he prefers the blank one.

Any input on the retailer offering these cylinders outlawkid? Would be interested in a a spare smooth side one.

I went with the Leech and Rigdon, Midway has them for an OK price. And, my birthday is in 4 days so that discount they give you is what actually made me bite.

Ended up being right at $280, the regular 1851 would have been an even better deal at around $260. Not bad for Ubertis. Should have gotten both... o_O

Dunno of a retailer selling any...i know EMF sells the pietta blank cylinders...but uberti ones im not sure of a retailer that does. I can ask the customer about the cylinder hes buying but i think it was an old blank cylinder the gun store had just had laying around...atleast thats what he made it seem like. But i will ask him for ya.

Understood. My apologies, sir.

Both VTI and Taylor's sell/sold Pietta and Uberti .36 part round/part octagon barrels and Pietta .36 smooth cylinders in pre-pandemic times. It appears that all of the parts are out of stock with both vendors.

Jim

Im actually on the wait list from VTI for a pietta partial round barrel...both the 5 inch and 7.5 model. They stated that the italians closed shop and stopped almost all production but were planning to open up and should have stock by sometime in September. EMF has a pietta non engraved cylinder for sale at 49 bucks which is a great price... Heres the link:

Not sure on uberti parts tho...im a pietta man myself so i really dont delve into shopping for their parts but im sure barrels and cylinders can be ordered.
