Ruger Old Army – back in service
(Also, this is my first post for this club)

I bought this ROA about 10 years ago at a gun show for $250. Mainly I wanted to get it because there was no paper work or registration required in Michigan. Have used it a few times at the range and hunting.

Almost sold it and I am glad I didn’t. Recently, I ordered a Howell 45 cal conversion and one of the Belt Mountain quick change systems. Even though my ROA was made in 1982, the cylinder required no fitting in my gun.

Took it to the range yesterday and it worked perfectly with my Silvertip ammo (fired cases almost fell out of the cylinder). Windage was right on and elevation was a little high (easily corrected with this gun).

This RD cylinder and Belt mountain system are perfect for this gun (especially since you have to reload the cylinder out of the gun).

Here is the photo of my whole ROA family complete with the original C and B cylinder and stock cylinder pin and loading assembly.

I just found two boxes of 255 grain, round nose lead ammo at my dealer yesterday. Also, I am going to play around with one of the original Lee basic loaders for a while for both this gun and a new Uberti 1871/72 Open Top in 45 Colt caliber (got to keep the loads for that gun on the lighter side).

Thanks for all you forum members that gave me a lot of encouragement to resurrect this old friend.

(Going to keep my eyes open for a short barrel, fixed sight model, hopefully in blue, without tapping out my home equity loan .)

Interestedto know year of manufacture, mine starts, 148 D602..
Bought Tuesday last, need nipple key ,
Had super blackhawk years ago

I don't know if your D is supposed to be a zero or not.
If it is then it could be 1998.
If the serial number is not on the Ruger charts below then it could be a recent late run Talo exclusive from 2017.

It was noted in 2018 that they were being sold. --->>> https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/return-of-the-old-army.841382/#post-10925930
Someone on the Ruger Forum picked up on them being sold in late 2017 and mentioned their prefixes as being 145 and 148. --->>> https://www.rugerforum.net/threads/the-old-army-is-back.301161/

At least some of them were being sold by Davidson's. --->>> https://forums.sassnet.com/index.php?/topic/277162-new-2018-ruger-old-army/

Here's the Ruger charts of ROA production dates which doesn't include the last run:

Stainless model chart --->>> https://www.ruger.com/service/productHistory/RE-OAKBP.html
Blued model chart --->>> https://www.ruger.com/service/productHistory/RE-OABP.html

The difference sould be whether it's a 3 year old gun or a 22 year old gun.
What kind of box did it come in?
Can you provide any other details such as is it new, stainless or blued and did it cost around $1000?

I have wanted to join for some time now, but never pulled the trigger on the prices that the ROAs are going for these days. However, I just won this one on GB, dates from 1978. It isn't in my hands yet (sellers image, but I have paid for it though :) ), so I don't know if I officially qualify for membership yet.
ROA.jpg

Ordered some .457 balls from Natchez, and have a 7.5" Simply Rugged Pancake that I ordered for a Blackhawk of that length that is long gone. Guessing that the crossdraw holster that I have for a Remington 1858 will also work for it. Also have an assortment of various Blackhawk grips to dress it up.

FWIW, up until 1985 the grip frame of the blue Ruger Old Army revolvers were made of aluminum.
That means that touching up scratches would require a different solution than regular cold blue.

Ruger Old Army Dec 2020.jpg

Early in December we bought a pair of Pietta 1860 Army revolvers at a gunshop in a small rural town. They had this pair of Ruger Old Army fixed sights stainless with the R&D conversions cylinders. I did some research and went back and bought them. They look unfired. The bad part, the percussion cylinders were lost. I did get two nice pair of Hogue checkered grips.

Not a fan of the plastic grips, but awesome that you got some nice Hogue grips with them.
Love them Ruger Old Armys.
I'm so glad I picked up a load of them when they were still affordable

My wife and I are cowboy action shooters. She kept complaining about the slick grips (although she'll never shoot them) so I seen an assortment of wood, checked grips and we picked out several pair and tried them on. Got them thrown in on the deal.

Yes, I've been watching auctions and prices of ROA are kind of nuts right now.

Why isn't this in the classified section??

I hate to do it, but need funds to help my folks move. If anyone wants a mint ROA. Here is my listing:

Make: Ruger

Model: Old Army 5.5" Fixed Sight *High Gloss Stainless (the RAREST model)

Caliber: .45

Location (city or county): Bay Area, CA

Price: $1650 (REVOLVER) + $350 (PARTS)

Will ship to High Roaders with reputable feedback. Buyer pays UPS Ground insured. Parts will ship USPS w/ Tracking.

Other info:
  • MINT COLLECTOR-GRADE INVESTMENT PIECE END OF DAYS GUN BUILT LIKE A TANK
  • Ruger Old Army (ROA), 5.5" barrel Fixed Sight High Gloss Stainless w/ silver and black Ruger medallion white ivory grips. Modeled after the Remington 1858 New Army and Colt SAA "Peacemaker".
  • The rarest model and from the final years of production. Ruger did a VERY LIMITED run of these towards the end of production.
  • It's my safe queen and has been safely wrapped in a microfiber cloth, oiled, sleeping in a Ruger hard case w/ desiccant.

I also have the Belt Mountain quick change kit, difficult to acquire because no vendors carry it anymore. And I have the Taylor Stainless 45LC conversion cylinder - ALSO OUT OF STOCK. Keep in mind, these latter parts are separate and not installed or attached. Just parts to be sold separately IF the ROA has already sold. Check out the videos below to see what these parts enable the Ruger Old Army to do View attachment 966591

I have never fired this gun, purchased it from another collector a while back, and am slowly letting go of firearms I just stare at and never shoot to help fund my parent's future move. It has a unique place in history and I hope it goes to a good home!

The ROA line was discontinued in 2008 and are highly valuable for the platform. CAS and SASS guys buy them up, and their value has doubled in 10 years. The most recent sales went for $1600 on Gunbroker: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886303114 and https://www.gunbroker.com/item/887697113

Mine is in BETTER condition, and has optional rare goodies.

Mine arrived today, and even nicer than the seller's pictures indicated. Here it is with the addition of some Altamont faux aged ivory grips and the 7.5" Blackhawk holster from Simply Rugged that I had left over from a Blackhawk that I sold a couple of years ago.

Beautiful looking OA, Sistema 1927. May I ask who made those grips, and where you purchased them? Is Altamont the maker? Have fun shootin' this puppy. You'll love it! Joe

Altamont is the maker. However, I purchased these 2nd hand on Ebay.

You want XR3-RED sized grips, same as the Blackhawk. Here is Altamont's page: https://www.altamontco.com/pistol-grips/ruger/blackhawk/

Thanks very much for the info and link Sistema1927. Much appreciated, as I had never heard of them before.

Made my own oversized grips for two of my Blackhawks years ago. Rugers grip sizes also seem short to me, but those Alta's on your gun sure look neat, so think I'll get a pair for my OA that I modified to Remington loading lever style. Best to you sir! Joe Beary

Greetings, This is my first post, I bought this new back in 1982 loved it ever since, would like to join. I did wish to ask members, when buying a converter is one better than another Kirst, Taylor or Howell? Thanks Ed
