A question regarding shotguns and ear protection. Is ear protection necessary with shotguns ? In short, does a shotgun damage your hearing the same as a handgun or rifle ?

Yes, a shotgun can damage your hearing. While shooting skeet, I use some molded ear plugs.

Ear muffs and foam ear plug work well as well.

Yes, I have always used eye and ear protection shooting, unfortunately I went without ear protection one afternoon for about 20 minutes near a wood planer and lost about half the hearing in my right ear and about 25% in my left ear. I thought, "It's only for a few minutes, no big deal" I had almost perfect hearing before and I was 45 years old, now I can barley follow a conversation if there is any background noise.

I wear earplugs and ear muffs whenever I shoot the shotgun. Ear plugs for the .22. Indoor range I wear both always. Can’t get your hearing back once it’s gone.

Is ear protection necessary with shotguns ?
WHAT? IS BEER PROJECTION NASTY WITH SHOTGUNS?
Yes, absolutely. When I first started shooting Trap, it was considered 'unmanly' by some shooters, (probably former Artillerymen) but I started wearing the foam earplugs that were available in the clubhouse. I don't like muffs when shooting wood stocked shotguns, (they can scratch), but I do wear my electronic muffs when shooting my 1100 Competition Synthetic during Annie Oakleys.

Huh? Says the guy that can tell you after it's way to late..."Wear hearing protection for anything loud." My hearing aids help but it was totally unnecessary. Years of Duck hunting and bird hunting without protection took its toll many years ago...
