Looking for a specific 308 bolt gun.

I have a Savage Scout rifle that I like a lot. It is the kind of do all rifle. Not great at any one particular thing but good at a lot of different things. 18" threaded barrel. Can mount a scope or not. Mine has a Vortex Crossfire 2-7 x 32 Scout Scope on it. Will shoot MOA with the right ammo. Has detachable box magazine. Good rifle.

I could be wrong but it looks and feels heavier than that. More like the precision. If I'm wrong and it ends up being as heavy as the factory version, I'll definitely regret ordering the Magpul.

Here’s the howa bolt. It’s not real easy to get a picture of it though.

I got the Magpul stock and installed it on the GoWild model. Box stock, it weighed 6lbs 14oz. With the Magpul it is 8lbs 8oz. The factory Magpul Hunter with the 22" barrel is listed at 9.3lbs.

With the Vortex Viper 4-16x I mounted on it, it came out to 10lbs 6oz. Heavier than I wanted but tolerable for now. I may go to a lighter scope.

Nice My Go wild in the the Magpull and a Leupold Mk4 came in at just over 11lbs!

They must be running a lot heavier barrel on the Magpul Hunters than I thought they were. I may have to see if I can get one of the barrels to have for a project later.

I think they are heavier. I'll look more closely next time I encounter one. I think you're right about the balance. The Mapgul stock puts it more between the hands and that makes it 'seem' lighter than the factory version with the heavier barrel.

I think I’m just gonna have my grail gun built. Nothing off shelf is exactly what I want. And I’m kinda a snob about these new actions (though I understand they are awesome accurate). Looks like I can have exactly what I want built for about $1200. Not too bad if you block out canibalizing a $700 rifle in the process. Wife gave be a sig kilo BDX range finder for Christmas. I’m really thinking about buying the 4-14 scope that matches it to go on the gun.

I've said it before but it bears repeating. Anyone who really likes an AR10 probably hasn't had to carry one very far.

I’ve gone back and fourth on it. We shoot pigs at night a lot. My AR10 with gen 3 NV and suppressor with a full mag is like 16#. That’s sucks. Sometimes we get 2 miles from the pickup stalking pigs. It’s a long walk back. I’ve used the NV on other guns and I’m always giving up something and end up back with the AR10.
I took a guy hunting a while back who brought a thermal on a very light AR10 with a light suppressor. It was a pleasure. I’m not sure how well that stuff will last. My NV is 15 years old and almost all the paint is gone on the suppressor.

I have a small stable of 300blk guns that just didn’t get the job done. They are a lot lighter though. Quieter also, cheaper to shoot, less concern about stray bullets. But at the end of the day I got tired of only being able to down the pigs I shot first trigger pull and just hearing the hits on the rest while they run away. I’m trying to sell one of those to fund my project. Just going to keep the pistol BLk I have.

Have you considered a 6.5 Grendel or 450 Bushmaster type AR15? Are the ranges at night compatible with the big bore AR15? If damage is insufficient it's hard to beat the upgrade to 308 though.

I'm researching a 308 bolt action as well. Do you want iron sights or strictly scope/IR?

Scope. The bolt gun I want needs to be able to be carried ok and shoot 800 yards good too.

For night hunting 300 is a pretty long shot. We walk up to within 50 yards and then keep blasting until your tired of wasting ammo or become unsure of what’s beyond your targets.

I’m very invested in loading components for 308 win. So I’m gonna be hard to sway. I do want a big bore AR though. I’d be pretty interesting in something I could cast for.

Until you see the difference it's hard to appreciate the upgrade in damage a 308 offers over most AR15 capable rounds. A 308 bolt would be a good platform for cast bullets. I haven't tried one, but one I'm interested in is the Savage 110 Tactical.

My Ruger Frontier. 16", regular and scout scope mounts, laminated stock. Short, accurate, but LOUD.

That's exactly why mine has a stout Harris bi-pod mounted to the front. Meant to stay put to do work!
