Hi guys !
Less then a year ago I bought a Sako AV 30-06
Never shoot with rifle before... I been busy with remodeling my house.. so now I am almost done with the house ..and was planing to buy some ammo ..
And what shock me i couldn't find 3006 online...
Only on gunbroker and other websites..and they price are insane ...
When do ammo will back on market ?
And why 30 06 Is disappearing? It's not a 9mm it's a hunting cartrifge... what is going on..
And btw I couldn't not find smokeless powder anywhere..to do the reloading....
Any tghouts ???

Everything is in short supply right now. All ammo, loading components, guns, loading equipment, everything. This panic seems to be lasting longer and effecting more stuff than most of the previous ones. Just hang in there and stuff will slowly begin to reappear.

Oh yeah, nice rifle by the way!

You've asked a question no one really knows the answer to. In the past year guns are being sold at a crazy rate, and all need ammo. Some people are saying it's going to last another year .... but who really knows. If you keep checking you will probably find some .30-'06 sooner or later.

Dunhams had a decent supply of rifle ammo last week. It shocked me lol. Our walmart has been getting shotgun and rim fire in. Not large amounts but at least it's trickling in.

Find some ammo. Any ammo. Buy as much of it as you can.

Then buy a gun that shoots said ammo.

That is about the only way to guarantee short term ammo availability.

The general fear that the government is going to restrict or remove gun rights is probably the biggest driver in this panic. Also a lot of new gun buyers want a few boxes of ammo as well. Add a pandemic and reduced production to make a crappy situation. If you watch on line and get lucky as some ammo is showing up sporadically. Get on some notification lists that sellers have. Be ready to strike when notified and order quick. Hopefully we will go back to having a reasonable supply soon. Some local stores are getting ammo trickle in so check the usual places. When supply returns you should buy at least a little extra ahead to be able to shoot whenever needed.

Today finding ammo that you need is about diligence and patience. All ammo at all stores is in short supply and the demand is still outpacing production. If you need to buy ammo you are going to pay more than you did a year ago no matter where you get it. Check you LGS in the morning during the week. Ask when they get shipments in. Check Armslist daily for sellers in your area. Know what the going price is. Buy it when you find it and be OK with the price you are paying. All you can do right now.

For what its worth, maybe look in places you normally don't visit for ammo. Try places that offer hunting licenses, even small grocery stores that have some ammo. Or start asking around and see where
others have been getting theirs. In my neck of the woods, there is a little country store that sells all household items, propane, etc. They have a very small glass case that has some hunting and pistol ammo from time to time. You never know what you may come across. Happy hunting!

@wiscoaster has the right of it--and used the same resource I was going to recommend, too.
Now, there's also the issue of which 30-06 ammo you want.
Searching for BarnesX is going to be trickier than generic softpoint or hollowpoint hunting ammo.
There's a pretty steep demand for M2 Ball equivalent for folk in the milsurp side of things.

There is at least one post in the Buy/Sell/Trade section of this forum offering .30-06.
OP is only up to 13 posts, and is likely not yet eligible for the Trading Post. Participation here has its benefits.

The recommendation to look in "less likely" places is also sound. There might be small caches at gun ranges, outfitters, or the like.

I remember noticing there's some 30-06 posted for sale in the Trading Post, ammo section, as of today, three boxes for $150. Don't remember right off who was selling, though.

Your best bet is constantly checking any local distributors. I see you are in NY State which makes things more difficult. Some online retailers will ship to a local FFl licensee but good luck on that. Your best shot is likely just frequenting local stores that sell ammunition.

OP asks “And why 30 06 Is disappearing? It's not a 9mm”

Short answer... besides all the bolt actions there’s lots of Garands out there in circulation. They gotta eat too.

Garands (most of them) don't eat the stock factory hunting ammo on the shelves.

If I had to guess, I'd say .30-06 and other similar cartridges are a fairly low-volume and possibly seasonal affair in terms of production. So, if the panic-buyers clear the shelves it would take awhile for supplies to rebuild.

Have not seen a box on the shelf in 6 month and when i sell milsurp on net it goes fast at $2+. Now did see 100+boxes of WW 5.56 yesterday afternoon at $12 box 2 box limit. Was all gone in AM. Clerk ( a friend) said he asked casually if buyers had something in that specific caliber. Most openly admitted they did not. Think ammo is either an investment or a new form of currency like bitcoin.

Is UPS the only way to ship ammo? I have a box you could have, don't have an 06 anymore but have a box kicking around. If there is any way to get it to ya that doesn't involve me driving 40 mins to the nearest UPS store I will. All I know is it can't go usps, which is weird because I once shipped a gun through them...

FedEx or UPS, but not the UPS store or the FedEx outlet locations (formerly FedEx Kinkos for the most part).

Ammo manufacturers are in somewhat of a bind. Rounds like 30-06, 270, 30-30 etc. are normally a seasonal run. They will make a years worth of it in just a few weeks, maybe even days production. But right now they are selling 9mm and 223 faster than they can make it. That makes it hard to stop producing those rounds, set up the machinery to make a few hunting rounds, ( that probably sell at a lower profit margin).
