Ultimate 357 magnum revolver if you were going to have ONE?

We will just have to agree to disagree

Only thing I think a 357 Mag is worthless is in a snub nose revolver.
Just to clarify I don't think 357 Mag is worthless, it can do allot of things fairly well but for any single task I have found a better combination of cartridge and revolver.

It's a good cartridge just not the best cartridge for anything.

A moderately loaded .38-40, .41Spl, .41Mag, .44-40, .44Spl, .44Mag, .45Colt, .45ACP will do everything the .357 will without making your ears bleed. I could live the rest of my life without firing a single shot of .357Mag and be happy.
Somebody posted that on the range where he goes, from time to time he got showered by empty cases from one of those double stuck semiautos. If complain doesn't have effect, one cylinder-full from 30 Carbine Ruger never fails to clear the bench.

In some people's opinion it might be the best cartridge to pair with a .357 lever gun, though, so here we are...

.357 is more versatile than most people take advantage of, but if you are going to stick with a revolver, the older pythons are the most accurate, followed by the GP100 in my book. If I can't have one of those, then give me an old K-frame like the model 13, at least I could EDC that and accurate enough.

Ohhhh man an older Model 65 in 4" is one SWEET revolver. I had a nickel 13 that was too nice to shoot. Hmmmm might have to think about a 65

I’m still saying that the ultimate 357 is nonexistent, but the closest thing ever made would be a Rossi Cyclops 8” with a whole slew of PPC customs nipping at its heels. The DW swap barrels comes close but it needs a touch more weight out front. The closest thing currently manufactured is a Taurus Raging Hunter but that gun is a bit wonky and I could never call it the ultimate of any variety.

Of course a double barrel Coonan would be very interesting.

Let’s face it. If you put 12 gun people together in a room and said “Come up with the ultimate .357 Magnum revolver from current or past production.” you would get 12 different answers at the start and after an hour you might begrudgingly get 4 different opinions based on consensus.
If you did the same regarding autoloaders in any caliber after an hour you’d still have a room of 10 people who still won’t agree. 10 because 2 left in a huff.

That’s what is actually great about revolver people. We may have different opinions, but at least we seem to play well together. :D

A 6" Monson Dan Wesson M15-2 with an EWK 1:12 twist barrel under the shroud. I have an M14-2 with a 3" EWK barrel and it's great with target level 158gr SWC loads as well as self defense loads.

I'm not paying $2000 minimum for a Python. I think that is absolutely idiocy especially seeing as Colt's quality control as well as company in whole. Ruger and S&W isn't much better if at all but at least they are sub $1000.
Yeah, I agree about new ones, the older Python's and even the older Rugers were better. My grandad had a 686 , Red Hawks and Blackhawks and I could hit anything with any of them. But the Python was tops.

Howdy

So many to choose from.

There's my S&W Model 19-3 that I bought brand-spanky new in 1975.

Or a Model 13-2 from 1979.

Model 65-3 from 1982.

Or a Model 28-2 from around 1964.

Or another Model 28-2, this one from around 1973.

My prettiest 357 Magnum is this Model 27 that left the factory in 1959.

Most definitely not this Model 686-6 that I bought brand-spanky new in 2015. I don't like this one at all.

Over in Ruger Land there's this Three Screw Flat Top Blackhawk from 1962.

Or this non-flat top Three Screw Blackhawk, also from 1962. I always thought this one would be a great starting point to convert to 44 Special.

A couple of 357 Mag New Vaqueros from when they first came out, with the false "color case' finish.

The only double action Ruger I have is this 357 Mag GP100. I think it was made around 1997.

But to tell you the truth, I think the best combination of a lever gun and a revolver is this Winchester Model 1873, from 1887, and this Colt Bisley Model, from 1909, both chambered for 38-40.

That strikes me as a stock photo. What is your experience with it and why is the MR73 a better suited companion for a lever action than this?

It is a stock photo, but I have done a lot of research on them and hope to have one in my hands soon, I am on a waiting list.

I don't worry about having my revolver and my lever gun shoot the same ammo. I love 45/70 and 30/30 in a lever gun and I don't want to carry around a BFR.

If I am just going to have one revolver, I want one that I can load with a moon clip or a speed loader. While I love the old plow handles, I wouldn't have one as my only 357.
