Finally shot my pre-safety Marlin 1894 357 magnum today and boy oh boy...What in the world have I been missing? Such a pleasant and satisfying firearm to shoot!

With that said I reload for 357 magnum so I need a revolver to be the companion of the Marlin. What would you guys suggest? I doubt I will carry it honestly.

As much as I like my Smith model 28, I think the 686 is a better choice for a wider variety of people.

I've had a 686 3" I believe and while I liked that revolver having 7 rounds was WEIRD! And also this time around I want a long barrel but an attractive revolver.

But I like the look and idea of a full length lug under the barrel/heavy to soak up recoil.

As a companion to a lever, range use (i.e. fun/satisfying to shoot) and/or open carry in the woods sound like probable uses as compared to a gun with potential for typical concealed carry.

Keep yours eyes out for a medium frame S&W or a Ruger GP-100. Either 4" or 6" are both good. Used is a good choice with these specific guns.

I do not recommend either the small frame S&Ws or the SP-101 unless concealed carry is the primary intended function.

Just one? See my avatar photo; my first Ruger GP100. 4” barrel, stainless steel, adjustable sights, full-lug, and, with the “grunge grooves” under the extractor, to lessen the likelihood of unburned powder, or other debris, from interfering with the full return of the extractor, after ejection. That last feature was discontinued, some time ago. The grip, and trigger, are a perfect fit in my hands. This is the personally-owned duty handgun I was using, one very interesting night, in 1993.

I have other GP100 revolvers, from 3” to 6” in barrel length, but a 4” version is the most-universally applicable, in the most circumstances.

    I went with a 2.5" barreled S&W 66 to go with my 16" barreled Marlin 1894.

Edit to add: Considering my 1894 CSBL was made in late 2019 to 21st century specifications, it's natural to pair it with a DA revolver. The short barrel choice on the revolver was because it is a good fit for a short carbine. Not to mention the fact I already have a 6" barreled Ruger GP100.

Either a Colt or clone single action with a 4" barrel, or a K frame S&W with a 4" barrel.

Either will shoot well, be relatively light, and give you a chance to carry concealed if necessary.

    4" pre lock S&W K frame eg models 19, 13, 66.

I'm always on the lookout for a 3", roundbutt model 13.

Ultimate .357 Magnum revolver, if I was only going to have one?

Well, I only own one .357 Magnum, it’s the only one I want, except for perhaps another Registered Magnum. 33CCC04D-1FA0-4F37-8BAE-62773496E179.jpeg AA65286B-B09E-46EF-AEB2-6376F742BA61.jpeg 400C6446-5C80-4465-A565-225D7007A50C.jpeg

I think my next 357 magnum will be a Ruger Redhawk 8 shot. B0B23B82-9EE8-483D-BBCB-C1799FE28BB7.jpeg

I'm with @Speedo66 on this one.
A SAA or a clone is a good match for a lever action. And you can't go wrong with a K frame either. Or maybe an L frame.

S&W 27/28 or DW Monson 15-2 but it's my M-19 that actually gets carried the most.

If I were only going to have one, I’d like it to be able to perform several functions. I think an 8 shot N Frame (327 PC or 627 UDR) or 7 shot L Frame (686+ 2.5 inch or 3 inch) - or their Night Guard variants - would be ideal compromises. Of course, if you don’t plan to carry it concealed, and want it as a hunting sidearm to compliment your Marlin, get a 4 inch, 5 inch, or 6 inch model of the N frame or L frame.

As a companion to a lever gun in 357? A Ruger old model Blackhawk 357.

As a sometimes carry gun in urban jungles? A slicked up S&W 66 or 686... 3 to 4 inches.

    One and only one revolver?

    Either a Smith Classic 586, a Python 2020, a new Manurhin 73 or a Korth.

Well it’s a lever that it would accompany so for me it would need to be a single action. I kinda like period correct matching sets. I’d look for a Ruger 50th Anniversary flat top BH in .357 Mag. I see them usually around $550 to $700 (NIB unshot). All steel. Blued. Nice balance and heft that soaks up the recoil of the heavier rounds.

2nd choice would be bird head Ruger Vaquero in blue (currently available).

For double action Dan Wesson would be my first choice.

    I'm torn between a 4" and a 6" barrel...Also torn between a S%W 66 or 686. But...I really, really hate that stupid lock.

So........... Ruger GP100 5" barrel? Looks freaking SWEET and would make for a killer OWB carry with a leather holster. Just thinking at this point, no hurry. Also not a huge Ruger fan. They seem kinda cheap. Had a SP101 or whatever and had to shim it and all other things because of crappy factory tolerances.

    I have a Marlin 1894 in 357 magnum that I bought back in 1987.
I would have to say that a SAA clone would make the best companion.

No, I have plenty of them in 45 Colt, 44-40, and an old frame Vaquero 44 mag. Do not want a small bore SAA. I'd like this to be a double action "modern" companion
