New York hunters

How do you feel about lite loads? My buddy is running the reduced recoil Hornady factory fodder 120 sst @ roughly 2500 iirc, would that be something of interest?

Not a bad price on the sst they really need to be slowed down some, I shot a doe with the 130 sst superformance I have left and half the deer was a waste. I'm low on primers, like down to 200 should like plenty but not much by time I load a few different callibers. Low on powder to, only powder I have for the 270 is imr 4350 which I'm about to open my last pound, that's get shared to. But this gun should get a little Priority this year.

Really too bad we live so far apart.... I still owe you some 7mm bullets...deep apologies I suck
Eta yes the sst does much better at lower impact velocities! We get longer shots out here, and really my ideal for an sst is 1600-2600 fps

no worries, I get some shots at 300-400 but of the few places I can hunt now 300 is about max, maybe more but I'd have to be in one very specific spot and deer would have to do the same lol. I won't shoot past 500 tho it's just to much time for a animal to move and wind is staring to effect a shot.

happens my furthest shot was with a 270win at 540, it was kinda dumb luck since the week before I was messing around shooting a rock in a old cow pound up on a ridge at the farm we hunted back then. I figured the drop and there's was not much wind the way the cut in the small valley was.

next week on opening day went in for lunch and had to walk up that big ridge and figured to check that spot out. Figures the buck was next to the rock I was shooting, I watched him for 20 minutes drink and eat. Dropped him were he stood, one of the coolest bullet traces ever and the longer shot gave me so more time to see it.

I don't wanna butt in terribly, idk anything about ny laws, but I've played with the .223 a bit and for what it's worth, the 50ttsx makes a heckuva killer for the slower twist! My 1:12 prints nicely with benchmark, bout the best hunting bullet I can get it to digest, haven't tried the 70 gr Speer, but wouldn't be legal here due to energy requirements at 100 yds. Good luck to ALL of you gents!

Good suggestions are always welcome, I it took one doe with my 223 rem 2 seasons ago. Was impressed with the 60 gr nosler partition. I still have a few of those 7, Iirc I shared them with my SIL got his axis 2. Have 300 60 gr hornandy interlocks to do load work up for after I finish the 62 gr fmjbt's I'm working on now.

My current 223 has a 1:9, the AR is 1:7 twist.

Have 100 new 139 sst's for 7mm 08 to see if the newer construction is as accurate as the older style, she retaining a couple loads that shot well last year iny rem 700 and 300 hornandy interlock spbt for my 243 to load up.

@troy fairweather I have some ramshot big game if you want to try it out for your 270 win. Shooters reference has manufacturers data for 130 gr sst's.
I'll have to maybe try some one day, I have a few powders that my work like h1000 but probably only for heavy bullets. There probably blc2 loads to but I don't really like using it for anything bigger then a 308 case.

Even blc2 would work in your garand, though I didn't get to load that powder for mine I have loaded it for a Winchester 670 bolt action.
I have 5 lbs of Superperformance and 5.5 pounds of IMR 4320, so I'll start with one of those. That's what I love about the adjustable gas plug. I'll open the plug and test loads as a single shot. Once I have a load I like, I'll close the port little-by-little until the load cycles reliably. I can use any powder and not worry about destroying the op-rod or cracking the receiver. I'll always stick to 150 or 165 gr bullets though. Anything that needs more killing will meet my .300WM.

AKAIK, NY only requires a centerfire rifle in .22 caliber or larger for big game (if using a rifle). I've never hunted deer with a .223 but know a few who have. I'd want a heavy, premium bullet (heaviest Partition or TTSX my rifle would stabilize) if I did. Barnes doesn't recommend the 50 gr TTSX for deer (just antelope and smaller), but if you have good real world results...

In my 12 twist 20" tube, the 50ttsx is the most hunt worthy bullet I could get to stabilize, I got better expansion with it than the tsx, and it got us legal for here. In my faster twists I use the 62 scirocco 2, just as I do in my boy's .22-250, but really the swift just increased our range. As long as shots are kept to 250 or less (my personal preference for reliable expansion 2200fps), I've not recovered a bullet and plenty of internal damage. The swift does provide a larger entrance wound but both are tiny exits, once past 150 yds with the Barnes I aim for the shoulder (on or off side) instead of just behind, (taking broadside shots or quartering only with .223 is my preference) to ensure a better wound tract, things are pretty open here so we rarely have to track anything solid hit, the blood trail with this bullet would not be impressive but they don't go far. We have more pronghorn and muleys than whitetail and that's all I've used the .223 on so far. If shots are too close and we try to break a shoulder, plan on not getting a lot of meat off that shoulder.....

I don't think we even require 22 cal or up anymore, a 17 hornet or 17 Remington is ok, Any centerfire. Unless they changed rules again and don't tell know one, they like doing that.

Troy, the NYS regs always have a section for up front for new changes. That being said, they don't make it easy to understand with their wording. As far as I can tell, here in NY, you can use any centerfire caliber. And THAT being said, I feel left out, because I live in Dutchess, and can't use a rifle for deer. Never shot a deer with a rifle. Got a bunch of virgins in my safe! Killed a bunch with shotguns in the '80's, but then went to handgun, and black powder, and never looked back. Mostly handgun. I never get to hunt anywhere you can use a rifle, and that's something always gnawing at the back of my head... I've got some really nice rifles I'd like to hunt with. Top of my list I'd like to see what they can do, is a Marlin '94 in .44 Mag, Kimber Adirondack in .300 Blackout, Remington 788 in 6mm Rem., and a whole slew of Mauser conversions I did in the 80's and 90's in 30-06, .308, and .270. So many guns, so little time....

Your welcome to come up to Orange county to rifle hunt, I have the Huckleberry ridge state forest 4 miles from my house. It's pretty good hunting, tho I need to walk it more for other spots. It's about 1500 acres broken up into a few pieces and not many people hunt there.

I always wanted one of them Adirondack kimbers but to rich for me.

Or broome, chenango counties, I know that's a haul though. There.are a few of us the members that hunt together.

Bill
I always come back to Upstate New York every year for a month to hunt deer. We hunt Broome, Chenango and parts of Delaware County.

Some of the area's are easy to get doe tags and is open to rifle hunting.
Last deer season we hooked up with Troy, Troy's dad and Bert and hunted together.
You are more than welcome to come hunt with us.

Yesterday we got done painting four small houses in Mineral WA. at noon and got the free use of a pontoon boat from the RV park we were staying at and got a few pictures of MT Rainier.

We took a ride to a DNR shooting pit in Elbe WA a couple of days ago to check it out. Thousands & thousands of spent shotgun hulls on the ground.
We didn't have enough time to do any shooting.

These are the houses we painted.

Today we are hooking up with a friend from one of the semi local gun forums and will be going out on his boat to go fishing for land locked salmon.
We will be meeting up with the Caveman at 8 O'clock.
I'll post pictures later this afternoon when we get back to the camper.

Gentlemen thank you one and all for your most generous offers! I'm only across the river in Dutchess from Orange. My very first deer I ever shot was a 6 pt. at the WMU by Stewart Airport, but again, even though it was Orange, they only allowed shotgun or pistol! lol I took it with a Mossberg bolt action 12 ga. that held 3 shots... My biggest problem is time. I do a game dinner for my club, and most of my time from October to Jan. is spent butchering and preparing the meals that I serve to everyone at our dinner, and the rest is stuff with the family. Last year I got a total of about 9 hours in the woods. This year it may be even less, as I brought some of my table fare on a fluke trip, and met up with a guy who's a taxidermist, and has access to some exotic meats. So I may be working overtime. My specialty is smoked hams I make from bear meat, along with kielbasi. 2 years ago a guy brought in a large bear, and I was able to take the flanks and also make pancetta from them. '"Pulled beaver" and "Chukar Chop Suey" were on last year's menu. I basically run behind my house and hunt when I can. The older I get, the lazier I get, and hate getting up in the mornings. I'll usually sit for a couple hours in the afternoon until sunset. But if I get the time, I will take you up on your offers! Thanks again!

Man Stewart is a mad house most times hard getting deer there being so many people, seen some nice bucks pulled out of there tho. I'm about 40 minutes from Stewart right by the pa ,ny border. Those game dinners look fun, never bin to one myself.

I've been going crazy not doing any saltwater fishing yet, couldn't go last year. My buddy and I my go down to Jersey next Friday and do some shore fishing, hope to get some fluke or porgy. Hell I'll settle for a bunch of searobins lol. I'm really wanting the new John Skinner dark matter fluke rod, hard to spend the $270 for the combo when I go so little and I can't cast with it for other uses since its got acid wrapped guides.

One of these days explain the differences in rods to me. My dads getting out of some of his equipment, might be something interesting in there for you but I dont have a clue about the different fishing gear. Most of what hes offings is his heavy Ulua poles, but I know he had some nice shore casting and spinning rods he was thinking of selling....I dont know the difference, just nod when hes talking about fishing gear, same way he does when im talking about the more in depth gun stuff.......
