CCI Large Magnum Primers for 45 Long Colt

I accidentally loaded up a bunch of 44 Specials with CCI magnum primers. Shooting out of a magnum revolver, couldn't tell any difference, though I did not crhono. I was also just punching paper.

This comes up a lot and usually you just work up new loads and start at the minimum.

I'd back off the powder some and work another load up with the mag primers. If you have a chronograph that'll help with testing.

AA-5 and W231/HP38 are good target powders in the .45LC and magnum primers will work well with them - just reduce the charge about 5% before working back up. However, H110/W296 is not appropriate for reduced loads, particularly in the big .45 case. Don’t ask me how I know this. High velocity heavy bullets loads are more appropriate for that powder.

I agree, AA#5 or HP-38 will deliver good 45 Colt ammo. The magnum primers will do no harm. As a matter of fact many reloaders like a magnum primer when using a ball powder and those 2 powders are ball powders.

I use to use nothing but W231/HP-38 in the 45 Colt and I used plenty of AA#2 and AA#5. Now I'm using HS-6 and I'm surprised how well it shoots being a slower powder. You should be just fine.

Here is a hint, try 7.0gr HP-38 under a 250gr cast bullet. I think you will like that load.

I have rarely seen any respectable manufacturer advise against Magnum primers for any particular load and have never personally experienced any negative repercussions from using them.

I personally am comfortable using them interchangeably with any handgun data calling for standard primers - although I rarely if ever use "maximum" loading data any more.

They'll be fine. Especially in that gun, as the only real issue is that the cups are harder and some striker pistols may not punch them...but I"ve not seen a hammer gun yet that had an issue. Personally, I'd go with the HP38 or AA#5, unless you want to go with Ruger only loads. In my opinion, H110 is about the worst powder you can use for 45 Colt, because of the large case capacity, by the time you get enough case fill for H110 to become really consistent, you are way up there pressure wise. Both HP38 and AA5 will work better, with a nod towards the HP38.

296 IS H110....same powder. Really, you'll be much happier sticking with your HP38 and AA5. If you want something else, try AA2, HS-6, or TiteGroup.

unique is the best powder for your application, imo. i'd keep a lookout for a pound or two.

you have a blackhawk and can shoot most any load listed in a reloading manual. as for all loading, start low and work up.

I’ve loaded a boatload of .45 Colt, but as the guys said not with WW296/H-110. (My old Vaquero and SRH in .454 can handle them, but I’m not into Magnumizing a pleasant round.) Unique, HP-38, AA#5, Promo, etc. are my propellants of choice for the old warhorse.

Don't bother buying AA#9 for the 45 Colt because AA#9 is also a slower magnum class powder. I would stick with AA#5 or HP-38 like you said.

I would suggest Power Pistol. 9.0 grains under a 250/255 grain RNFP is a very nice load and comparable to 8.5 grains of Unique. Be careful to not double charge the case if you are using Win231/HP-38.

The only issue I’ve had using CCI magnum LPP in 45 Colt is my Marlin rifle will take two hammer strikes to set them off-no issue in the revolver.

If you ever do try Win296/H110, it is advised not to go below minimum starting loads. I'm only repeating what I've read but I believe those powders are not stable at too lite of a load. They are fire breathers only and if you want less, find a different powder. Good luck.

I really like 4227 for 44Mag and Spec. I don't know the load data on 45LC but I bet it would be great. In 44 Magnum it's forgiving and so bulky it fills the case, sometimes completely. It's not the cleanest powder in the world but I like it for it's wide range and stability.
