I had my wife pick up some primers for me today because she was shopping near the Cabela's (about 40 minutes away) and she brought home large pistol primers like I asked for......they just happen to be magnum primers.
Now, since I have no large magnums in the collection, will I just be out $34? I load 10mm and 45ACP, so if I load them at starting levels could I, or should I, use the primers? CCI 350 and the powders I use for 10/45 are AutoComp and Power Pistol.

as long as you are not close to max you probably won't notice the difference. a number of years ago I chronographed a load in 41 mag using Unique with CCI-300 & CCI-350 primers. after shooting 25 rounds of each the only thing I noticed was that extreme spread was a little lower with the CCI-350 primers but not enough to worry.

I've had the same results when chronographing the same load with magnum verses standard primers. You may see a few feet per second difference, usually less than the SD of the load.

CCI uses different large pistol primers but Winchester uses one primer for both standard and magnum applications with their large pistol primers. That has to tell you it's not dangerous.

Actually in your 10mm I think you will like the results you get using a magnum primer with Power Pistol. As said above, as long as you're not already bumping up against the Max charge you really won't notice much of a difference. You probably won't even have to drop back on the charge weights. I haven't yet tried AutoComp so I can't comment on it.

I accidentally got some magnum primers once too. I haven't loaded them yet. I thought I would load them in 44 Spl since I don't have any magnum guns either.
Thanks for the comments on this.

Magnum primers aren't necessarily always/only for magnum handguns. They are supposed to be good for igniting certain powders. I bought a box because the guy at the store said I should use them for .357 magnum. But I haven't found any .357 loads that specify them, using Unique. I use them anyway, because I have them. Even in my light plinking loads. Why not?

The same thing happened to me in September, but at the Nevada Cablea's. The guy behind the counter gave me LPM's instead of LP's and I didn't notice until I was ready to start loading. It was also for 45 ACP and I haven't had any problems with them with 200 SWC's and 230 LRNP's with Unique. I've tried all loads from 4g to 6g and they all went off just fine with no signs of overpressure anywhere (case or primer).
