I'll be looking at getting a dot for at some point and have never had one for Pistole'...
For lack of knowing better, say 6in plates at 0-20 yard.

This is a very good video that will help you pick a red dot. Basically, John recommends a 3 MOA dot and that will likely work well for you too.

I've found little info anywhere other than opinion, but with what I have found it seems a 3moa is likely the choice. That is of course unless one has the expendable income for a Trjicon with adjustable capability. So far I'm leaning heavily at the Burris fastfire as it's affordable and well proven.
It will be some time before it's all said and done though, so I'll continue to keep looking around.

I have 2 with Burris Fast Fire 3’s . I always go with the biggest dot the manufacturer offers . At normal pistol ranges it has never been a problem up to 50 yards . Out to 100 smaller dot maybe , on a rifle definitely a smaller dot .herrwalther

I watched John's video when I was shopping around for my dot. And it did help me learn enough about the tech to know what to look for, even though I didn't follow his advice. I went with Holosun and very glad I did. Many Holosuns are capable of using multiple reticles. Mine can do 3(ish) MOA dot, 32 MOA circle, or dot-in-circle. I went with dot in circle for a couple reasons, one of which was the larger size lets my eye find the dot faster so I am not "chasing the dot" inside my optic.

I've looked at bunch of them, and also have (I think) a fair understanding of some of the mounting footprints. I'm still not totally sold on circle dot type but like I said it's still a work in progress.
I picked up my Beretta 92X RDO yesterday and was given a choice of a free mounting plate, so I went with a Docter footprint as there are a good number of sights available for it. Hopefully it will arrive in a timely manner, but who knows with things being the way they are...

I like 6moa, at 20 yards the dot will cover 1.2”. Any smaller and I feel like one is giving up sight acquisition time.

Self defense gun I go with a bigger dot 6 moa. Target and plinking I use a 3

On a pistola I'd go with a 6moa dot. I have a vortex venom 3 moa and 6 moa, the 6 moa is definitely preferred on the pistol, 3 moa is great on a PCC or SBR. I pick the 6moa up much quicker, and it's still plenty small enough to ding 8" plates at 50yds.

6 for speed but all 3 of my pistols with dots wear 3 MOAs.

I have 4 Fastfire 3s and an AT3, all 3 minute dots, on pistols and they work well for me. I am too old to get in a hurry. If I were young and tough and did the steel competition thing I would go with a larger dot and a tube type red dot. Sometimes I have to hunt for the dot in a reflex sight but the tube type is just like a scope for me, look and the dot is there just like crosshairs are.

I'm still fairly sold on the Vortex Venom, but I'll go over it with Burris and a couple other same price range before I buy. If I can find a deal on a Holosun I might just spend a bit more for a 507 variant.

Holosun can take a leap now as far as I'm concerned.
I was looking at a HS507K-X2 and seriously considering it until getting it mounted that is. Seems the footprint of the "K" variants are some proprietary modification of the Shield footprint. It has 2 lugs removed entirely and the other 2 are not as deep in the sight base.
That of course is IF they have a plate for your pistol (for $50), and in my case they do not. They sent me a link to have one custom made and that itself was going to cost $100.

I saw an assortment of optics at a gun store about a month before I bought my first one. I talked with one of the clerks and was able to look through several and compare them. They were not mounted on pistols, but I could hold them up at arm's length where they would be had they been mounted. It gave me the information I was looking for with different size and shape dots.

Too much 'stuff' in your sight is counter productive. Single small dot is best imho.
If you have too much going on in there, it doesn't work very good in low light either. It hides your target.

Big reticle/dot for speed, small for for accuracy. I use mine for steel challenge and have circle/dot reticles. The guys who use C-Mores for steel sometimes have 12 or 16 MOA dots.
I prefer the circle dot reticle for that reason too. The circle makes picking up the target faster wheel the small dot allows for a precise aiming point.
