What? I missed the memo that it was time for our annual truck gun thread? Unfortunately, I suspect that for most of us, keeping a long gun in our vehicles is no longer a reasonable option.
Before I retired, I would throw my patrol carbine (6920 with an EOTTech, later an Aimpoint PRO) in a soft case with three loaded P-mags in the pockets, basically for going back and forth to work. It is NOT legal for citizens to carry loaded long guns in motor vehicles in my state. Unless I'm going somewhere where I'm going to be using and/or carrying a rifle, I do not keep a long gun in the vehicle anymore.
As noted, firearm thefts from vehicles are a major source of the stolen gun market in many areas Even our stupidest tweakers up here target cars, trucks and SUVs that look likely to have a firearm inside (trailheads up here are horrible for vehicle break-ins).
It's just not the same now as it was back in the day when many of us kept a loaded lever-action .30-30 in the truck while working on the property, farm, ranch...
