So I have been pondering a grab and go rifle kit for many years. I can never narrow down my top caliber choices. My top use is it will be a hunting kit. I hunt predators and deer in the south mostly but sometimes I hunt mule deer out west. I have gone back and forth with having 2 bolt action rifles, which makes caliber choices endless. My other option is an ar-15 or an ar-10 with a complete rifle and then a second upper.

mother things going into the case will be one of my back up pistols, a Glock 20 or a 1911 in 10mm. I’ll have spare ammo, skinning knife, range finder, spare mags, shooting sticks.

now onto my caliber choices. If I go with an ar-10 I was thinking 308 and 243. If I go ar-15 I’m leaning toward a 223 and a big bore. Seeing as there’s so many caliber options I’m wondering what other people would like in a rifle kit.

most of my hunting is done under 150 yards. But there’s always a possibility of longer shots at big game. That’s where the big bore falls off the usefulness list. I hope to never need the kit for bug out but being prepared always sticks in my mind. That always makes me lean back to a 223 with a QD scope and red dot to be swapped out.

so what does everyone else think? If you were building a do most kit what would you have in it? Would you go for a second caliber choice or stick with 1? What other gear would you try to pack in it?

oh and the case I have and want to use is an eylar 53” case

EDIT: The main reason i say bug out kit is because it forces me to think light. I don't think ill ever be in a bug out situation but i like to use the idea so that it makes me think about more uses for everything that goes into the kit. im really focused on the hunting side of this whole question. I'll likely never have to carry this case a long way. it will go into the truck, off to hunting camp and only things that i need for that specific hunt will be carried.

A scoped Ruger 10/22 with 25 round mags. 9mm pistol.

If you have to live off the land it will be mostly on small game. And a 22 to the head will take out any big game animal in North America. Remember, in a survival situation normal hunting rules involving fair chase no longer apply.

I will add, this is for a single person. If in a group and each person is carrying a long gun and a handgun then it opens the door to additional options.

I would have 3 guns:
A .30-06 rifle (my preference, but other calibers would suffice)
A 12 gauge shotgun.
A large caliber revolver (.357, .44, .45 Colt)

I can't imagine any hunting, survival, or defensive situation in North America that I wouldn't be equipped for.
See I get on that choice road too. And your choices are top choices for anything needed

A 308 will fill the role just fine. An AR308 is going to be hefty. A bolt action will be lighter and easier to pack. But honestly, in a survival situation, a firearm is not the biggest priority. Not even top 5. But survival tactics are off topic for THR.

thats why I have designed all my choices around hunting. The odds are low for a survival situation.

I’m more on the mindset of a hunting set up. Basically something I can store the main items I need for hunting in 1 case.

If you’re bugging out then everyone else is too. Unless you live somewhere extremely remote then the big game will all be gone pretty quickly. At that point you’ll need a people gun much more than an animal gun.

survival is always a second thought for all my kits. My top use is a kit I can grab and go hunting

10mm for pistol seems good. If doing an AR15, maybe 6.5 Grendel? And other uppers for 5.56 or .22lr.

the 6.5 grendel is a good choice. not one i load for yet but that's not hard to change. i don't have much experience with it though. ill have to look into range and effectiveness on deer at longer ranges

It's not a long range hunting option. A genuine long range hunting option is limited to the bigger platform. I'm rocking the 357 pistol lever option so the 10mm seems comparable. 41 mag would be another good option for pistol and carbine. The long range hunting puts you in a 3rd gun which I don't find optimal in a survival or hunting situation.

My "Bug Out" main gun would be my Savage 24D 22 over 20 gauge. The .22 will handle the small game hunting and the 20 gauge can be loaded with shot shell or slugs for big game. For a handgun, I would carry my Ruger Blackhawk 45ACP/45 Colt. The 45 colt cylinder can be loaded with some shot shells and bullets, the ACP cylinder for personal protection. I would want guns that don't require alot of maintenance and will be reliable with most ammo found or made.

An AR-15 in 458 Socom would be good medicine for short range deer hunting... I have one with a Fostech Echo II and its fun as heck! Of course I have been hesitant to try it in binary mode as each round is $4 bucks unless I use reloads... In semi it is a thumper on your shoulder though! So that would be my AR type rifle pick. As far as bolt guns go, I'd be torn between my new R700 25-06 and my Patriot 270Win... I have a better scope on the 270 so I would probably pick it but the 25-06 has a YHM QD mount for a YHM suppressor so there's that... Or I could do like you are saying and have both! Of course you cant forget a 12GA pump shotgun with 3.5in BBB and 3in BB for duck and goose hunting... I would also be tempted to have a handgun of some kind so I could carry a smaller, handier, gun but what kind is dependent on the ammo stockpile... I would probably go with my Glock P80, the Lipseys' Gen1 remake, as I have a 5in threaded bbl for it and a thread adaptor to use a 5/8x24 9mm YHM suppressor. What are your thoughts on my rationale? I could also just go old school and use my M1 Garand and my Springfield Mil-Spec 1911! I figure if the first enblock clip of 8rds of spicy 208gr ELD-X reloads don't stop a bad guy or elk or what have you, then I'm in trouble and need to follow up with more suppressive fire as I retreat!

I have a 458 socom. I love shooting that. I have everything from 100gr to 525gr options for it

Ill do you one better, If I were to have just 1 gun (gasp:eek:), I'd go with my M1 Garand for sure! Semi-auto 30-06 for the win!

that’s why I was considering an ar-10. Have a 243 upper for general hunting and the 308 upper for longer range. I have used my 308 Remington 700 out in Nevada when I lived there to take mule deer

I'd eat a rabbit shot with 38, what round are you choosing. I'd also like to limit my footprint in any way possible. My situation would include my son so that's cheating but I'm not exactly leaving him behind.

Had to edit my main post. Im not really focused on anything from the bug out side of this kit more than just the fact that it makes me think weight and usefulness of everything in the kit. its all about hunting for the most part
