Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

I have been helping out my mother in law this week and have not been out hiking at all. That doesn't mean I haven't been enjoying the outdoors. She has a canal (drainage ditch) behind her house and each morning while drinking my coffee, I have been enjoying watching the alligators, turtles, birds, and fish.
I know many of you have great views out your back-door including city Skylines, fields, waterways, and woods. Please share them!

Nice backyard view. Prefer that view over a city skyline

Well, this was last night. A5CB092F-E620-4828-BC41-2FD9CE1ADD1F.jpeg
This is the start of the third month here at my Grandparents homestead, my new home. It was a farm and the foundation is still visible. I randomly pull glass and trash out of one part of the lawn, like the salsa jar there. Dang it grandpa!
It raised four boys, one being my father. As well as me, my sister, and innumerable cousins as grandkids. It will raise my children. And I will be carried out feet first, like my grandmother and grandfather.

It isn’t much, but ALL the toilets flush now, my grass is coming back, I have an out building for motorcycles and tractors and the stumps are easy to dig out. Truly a slice of paradise!

I actually wore this pistol around some yesterday, mostly as a goof, walking around with the kids. But some recent events in town keep her in my bed at night over a usual PT-92.:( I wish I could be just a little more rural. Seclusion is security.

I need a new weapon light.

Makes me love a pocket pistol even more! But she is a great bed companion. Doesn’t snore, no cold feet, won’t take the covers and she doesn’t whine at the door to go out.:D

An obligatory Michigan Morel pic. We went toward the previously unexplored part of our creek.(pronounced “crick”;))

This was the most I could get in a shot. It was nice to swat some brambles down with the unloaded AR, yup I actually use mine.;)
The white morels just cover that end. These where the grand daddy-est ones, the larger in the foreground being eight inches!

I am embarrassed to admit a mighty hunter I am not.:( I was benevolent with the wood chuck. And evidently SHE liked it around here. She moved under my bonfire pile and I found a little woodchuck in a tree. It’s little brother in the ground next to it enjoying the sun. That’s as close as I wanted to get.
Seems all my tuning of my rimfire was for naught. I’m a sucker, and it’s not like I’m gonna eat it.

We’ll see if she appreciates the tuning of the dirt bikes as much!

So, there’s the view from my back sliding door, @WisBorn.:)

Beautiful sunset!!! Looks like a great place to call home:thumbup:

Trying my hand at some daytime varmint hunting this past weekend in middle Tennessee.

A larger Hickory (or possibly a Tulip) from this weekend foray across the hunting property.

No gun in this picture but taken the same day a few hours later. That large sycamore tree in the background really popped with the setting sun on its smooth light colored bark. The picture without depth, does not really capture how much that tree visually popped to the naked eye.

I went back yesterday now that the leaves are on the tree and its definitely a Tulip tree not a hickory.

Same tree, same gun, a lot more leaves.

At the end of the day I was trying to get a picture of the bees on a honeysuckle and behind me came a crunching and a crashing through the woods. It was extraordinarily loud and where I was standing I was hemmed in by the thick overgrown edges at the narrow end of the food plot and probably only had 15-20 feet of visibility between me and the oncoming ruckus. I moved out of the food plot past the edges into the wood proper and got about 15 yards visibility. My first thought was injured deer pursued by coyotes/feral-dogs, maybe even a stray black-bear but unlikely in middle TN, all I knew for sure was it was loud, coming my direction and I had limited visibility. But then I caught motion in the brush and new it was much smaller (and less threatening) and then out romped two 9-banded armadillos playing grab-arse. The amount of noise they were making was impressive. My suppressed 300 BO was far quieter and I managed to get one of them before the other disappeared into a narrow hollow.

PXL_20220604_235558980.jpg

The Maker 220 gr REX bullet does bad things to armadillos. The bullet went in in the middle of his back and came out just to the right of he head, he never moved just rolled over and twitched. This 300 BO pistol and ammo has accounted for over a dozen of these up-armored Opossums in the past two or three years.

Awesome place.

We have been very busy with planting season here on the farm. We are nearly done planting and a considerable amount of replanting.
I haven't been to bed before midnight for two weeks. One night was 4am...back at it by 7am. Lots of happenings and mishaps too. Lots of blown hydraulic hoses and parts and supplies are short. We ran out of diesel one day. Thankfully we got resupply that same day....but our supplier was OUT.

Here are some rand6pics to contribute to our beloved thread....

I was sitting out a rainshower when the sun popped out.

I know it's silly but I enjoy a hot meal! reheated leftovers on the engine block....perfect 200 degrees! I do it quite often if the lovely Mrs farmer has made something special. It's a treat to get a hot pulled pork sammich.

A very careless doe just 100yds downrange from my portable shooting bench! She better not get too bold next November!

Showing my support for Illinois' next governor!

20220524_075623.jpg #1 moving totes to the spray tender.

My lcp has been a constant ccw e'ryday.

I thought I'd go check make sure the snow was melting. So after some load testing, I refilled my canteen at a scenic spot, and headed up.
IMG_20220612_105854692_HDR.jpg

Then I confirmed the snow had indeed melted, by finding the trail, rather than 4 feet of snow.
IMG_20220612_111231396.jpg

It leads to a nice but marshy meadow.
IMG_20220612_112220647.jpg

On the far side the meadow is a stream, which is flowing rather quickly right now.
IMG_20220612_115052631.jpg

The old logging road once went across the meadow and stream. It's easily picked up on the other side, thought it's slowly being reclaimed by nature.
IMG_20220612_113854257.jpg

Eventually it leads past another meadow.
IMG_20220612_115909046_HDR.jpg

Lots of moose sign in the area, but even at 10,000 feet the temperature was up at 75 degrees. So I expect they were bedded down.

I circled back around to the stream and tried to get some pictures of one of the fish I'd scared off earlier.
IMG_20220612_124517844_HDR.jpg

Kinda hard to see. They were mostly 8-10" long and pretty actively hunting.

I brought the 686+ for angry moose protection. And was glad to have the G33 as a backup for the aggressive fish.
IMG_20220612_125553259.jpg

Well, actually they were just the guns I'd been shooting earlier. I should have brought something for the mosquitos though. I'll have to remember that next time.

Thanks for sharing your pictures! Sorry to hear about the break downs and running out of fuel!!! Frustrating stuff.

If you are going to share pictures of engine warmmed sandwiches you may have a few visitors...:D

So which 357 do you like better
Or is that asking which child do you like better

I like both 357s better than I like children. They're only noisy when I let them be. :neener:

I like the 686+ better. Though the G33 certainly has it's place, which is in the summer heat. The .357 Sig is a one tricky pony, but it's a good trick. The Magnum is just far more versatile, so it wins for me. Hopefully I'll have that woods load dialed in soon. ;)

Went out for a hike in an area I know pretty well two weekends ago.

Got about 3 miles from my vehicle and the thunder started. Got to a high point and checked it out. Black skies. Checked the radar. Headed straight for me fast. No chance to get back to my vehicle on time. Went to a rocky outcrop I thought might have shelter. I got very lucky. Found this.

I tucked myself in for 30-40 minutes and enjoyed the thunder and hail storm. Probably the best time I’ve had in a month. Took the opportunity for a picture.
35BA2E85-3DE8-451E-B527-7E7F45A4E89F.jpeg

Quite a bit of hail. I’d have had a bad time if I’d been stuck out in that.

I stayed mostly dry and after putting my gun in my bag I pulled out a beer to enjoy the storm.

The aftermath.

Armored farmer

I greatly admire you and all of your fellow farmers with all the work you have to do year round to keep things goin' and growin'!

I would add that I was never meant to be a farmer as I just could never get use to finally hitting the hay at 4 A.M. then getting up at 7 A.M. to do it all over again!

That definitely sounds too much like hard work to me!
