Rifles you adore that leave others scratching their head?

Heathen! Heretic! Infidel!

We all know triangle handguards are the choice of the truly enlightened!

This might be true for the retro builders. Now go ask any service member with enough time using the A1 triangle handguards what they think. Those things will definitely pinch your support hand on a regular basis.

I like Ruger #1s.
They are not perfect.
They aren't cheap either.
But IMHO once youve had a good one, youll always need to have one in the safe.

Have not handled a Merkel Helix. Kinda interested in one of those, an Alpinist in .308win.
But would take an Explorer if I end up diggin the platform.

Im guilty of the round clamshell myself o_O

Cool rig. I did a 11.5/5.5 w a flattop (guess that makes me a super heretic LOL).
Round small diameter handguard. More comfy.
No carry handle, run a DD A1.5

Tried an OEG yrs ago and never worked for me. My right is super dominant and brain won't superimpose.

I'm gonna take the opposite approach of you question and mention a rifle that most adore but I just scratch my head.

Ruger 10/22

I have two old, identical, standard, stainless birch stocked rifles; one that never been out of its box.

The "shooter" is a nicely finished, accurate and reliable with any ammo I could stuff in the mag but, I just don't "feel" it.

Overall a fine example of a classic .22 rimfire riffle.

But...

An old Marlin 60 is much more comfortable to me with it's thin, svelte forearm and every bit as accurate, maybe more.

Hope I didn't make any enemies!

I built it around the 70s Singlepoint OEG. When life hands you lemons lol! It works for me just fine, but they do take getting used to

A 1022 sporter is the best feeling to me. '66-71, also known as " fingergroove ".

Ive had 3 of em, all bought used. One was horrible shooting, the other two actually good ( .75 at 50 yards w reg ammo ).

One was even factory checkered.
They only made around 535 of those.
Not to be confused w the Canadian Centennial ones that were checkered and had medallion.

People may think I'm crazy, but this little rifle is really cool to me. It's a Rem. 504 and except for a little trigger smoothing and some bedding, it's pretty much factory. I have two 5-shot magazines that fit flush to the bottom. It shoots as good as it looks too!

I found it at a Marden's salvage store, a new rifle that was part of a gun shop buyout. It was on the other side of a counter and I asked to see it. It's been mine ever since that day!!! The action is wicked-smooth!

Don't recall ever seeing another one like it. It kinda feels like a Rem 700, though the action is a lot shorter.

Sorry, I submitted an older photo of my rifle, which included the original barrel. The rifle now has an after-market fluted, heavy 17mm HMR barrel that has transformed the rifle into a great medium-range varmint rifle and scourge of the acreages for both my and my son's properties. I really like the chambering even better than the .22 WMR I've used for years! Also, the scope mounted these days is a 3-9X Leupold, which is also better. (See Below) upload_2022-7-4_11-44-39.jpeg

The Ruger No. 1.

My friends often wonder why I’ve always liked them. Pricy, often
not tack-drivers, only one shot, kind of heavy.

But man, those rifles are sexy to my eye!

It took me a while to get a No. 1, I found this nice one in .223 a little while ago. Hopefully, it wont be the last. :)

Stay safe.

Honorable mention to a walnut-stocked Remington 7615 Police.

I have a 7600 in .35 Whelen. I found a laminate stock, and had it shortened to 12.5". Then I found a replacement slide, so I wouldn't bugger up the original. When the laser "read" the gray laminate stock, the paint produced is a purple-gray. So I have this 7600 with a gray laminate stock and a purple-gray foreend. It shoots well with my Williams peep sights, though. :D

Ive got a beater 760 in .35 rem that the deer really really dislike ;)
Remington pump rifles are cool, but they've jumped to crazy prices these days :(

Be sweet if they brought em back, and did one in .350 legend

The money pit.

Never should have bought it. Had orig #3 stock w homemade flat forend....poorly done. Junk scope. But it also had a Canjar trigger.

So used #1 stock and forend, the latter from a tropical so wouldnt need to sand as much to fit.

McGowen bbl in .219 Donaldson Wasp.

Unfortunately whoever drilled it for scope base mucked that up. Have to use windage type. Even then its way over. Got some Burris posiline gloss off Ebay. And ordered the offset insert .020". So can use those if I want ring body more toward center. Thought about having base screw holes slotted to make up for it.

But it shoots sub half inch at 100.
Old M8 10x has CPC reticle which i like. Useless for a 2nd hold like could be done w duplex. But just old school neat.

Have to add stud to forend and test off bipods. Beans too tall now so on the back burner.

Not into #3s. Not into rimmed cartridges either. Is a Frankengun. But so dorky as to be cool.

View attachment 1084671 So I’m pretty happy with this:

I trained on M16s in the army, and I’ve taken week-long courses where I fired an AR or a Scar, and I’ll readily admit that the ergonomics of the AR are almost perfect.

But…

I’ve never liked the .223, and AR10s are just…not what I’d hoped they’d be. My favorite rifles have always been M1A and Garands, so I finally built this monstrosity:

  • SOCOM-16 platform (you’re giving up too much velocity! You can’t easily suppress it!)
  • Archangel CQB stock
  • Ultimak M8 rail
  • EOTech mounted up front on a riser to see over the
  • DBAL illuminator
  • Surefire light, and a Surefire switch that drives both the illuminator and the light
I love it. It’s what I’ve wanted since i started looking for semiauto 308s.

I love it in spite of its flaws.

anyone else have weird preferences in rifles? Or dedicated slug guns that are your go-to just because of irrational preferences?
Not gonna lie I want a Sage chassis for my M1 Garand just to P-off fudds at gun shows lol.

I don’t have any truly odd rifles. I do know that my use of a Winchester 94 .357 made a lot of people cringe when I used it in CAS. You see, some folks just can’t handle someone enjoying themselves shooting what they want in that game. I like to bring it out on occasion to see how many “do-gooders” recommend I “get a 73 and have Smilin Schmuckatelli slick it up for ya.”

But enough about that silliness.

Here is one rifle that people do scratch their heads about…after I out shoot them with iron sights. :)

Savage model 30 “Stevens Favorite” .22 LR.
View attachment 1085950

This is a great shooting .22 rifle.
I have its twin fun little gun I love mine, probably overpaid a little but it was one I wanted because I've also got an old one that was my grandfathers but that one is missing some parts that are probably unobtanium so I don't think i will ever shoot that one. Its kind of funny when someone asks what your favorite rifle is when you have a Stevens Favorite !

I had a guy ask me “Who is Steven?” :D
I had to explain Stevens was a company that manufactured a rifle they called the “Favorite”. He continued looking at me like I was speaking in Klingon. I went back to my shooting.

The triangle is a clamshell...

I am close to finishing an AR in 6.5Grendel with an A1 upper receiver and A2 style wood furniture from Boyds with a stainless barrel...
Pics when done. I have the 6.5 Grendel in a lot of different configurations but one of my favorites is my 6920 with a carry handle. People just scratch their heads when I tell them its in 6.5 Grendel.

All thats left is paint on the receiver, gas block, and handguard cap. I got it all primed with DuraFil yesterday. Will get flat black duracoat this weekend. Ill definitely post pics. My other "Grendel" was my first AR, in 264 LBC. Heavy 24" barrel from Satern, flat top, YHM camo furniture. TiN BCG, Timney cassette trigger.

I wouldn't say that I necessarily adore it, but I have a great deal of respect for my Ruger American. That rifle has no damn business being as accurate as it is for how much it costs. I can deliver honest to God half inch groups with cheap Winchester Power-Points, and I didn't even think I was capable of shooting that well.

The stock feels as though it was made for iron sights, the bolt rusts if you look at it weird, and the "blued" finish is as mediocre as mediocre gets, but damn can it shoot.

I'm having a really hard time justifying dropping the cash to replace it. Now if it were the same price as an M70 or M77 I could see passing on the American, but for the price I'm hooked.

I honestly think it may be my last hunting rifle. There's no real reason to change it, except for maybe a custom fit stock to bring my eye up to the scope a little better. Maybe I just need a fatter cheek, I dunno.

What caliber do you have if you don't mind me asking?
I'd like to find one in 7.62x39 but they're "unobtanium" locally at the moment.

Ohhh, I really like my Ruger No.!B in 30-06. Beautiful rifle and as accurate as heck. Toss up between that and my 1963 Sako Finnbear in .270 Win, which now resides in Idaho. Two favorites.
