I own the Ruger 57, but don’t shoot it much; but I was afforded the opportunity to try out a friend’s new M&P 5.7. Usually, I decline these offers (Heresy! I know….) because I’m aware of my occasional lack of self-control with collecting things. I own the 57, as a companion to the LC; but was dying to try the S&W variant with the unusual bolt alongside mine for comparison. Looking at it, and working the slide, I figured there would be MORE felt recoil as the 2-piece bolthead seems to stay in battery, as it retracts, a smidge longer than the Ruger’s more plain-jane flat-faced lockup (before they begin to slide back), causing a bigger impulse. But… not the case at all! In fact, it felt smoother and had even less felt recoil than the Ruger! [This is PRECISELY why I usually decline offers to try someone else’s fun stuff…] I can’t obviously speak to longevity; but I’m definitely intrigued by it. [And the range owner, who also got to try it, was similarly inclined to grab one himself - and he loves his FDE FN.]
As to other particulars… it felt slightly thinner in hand than the Ruger (and definitely more svelte than the FN); maybe it’s the more rounded profile. Otherwise, it shot all the different ammo we had (FN 27 and 40gr, as well as American Eagle 40gr) with no problem. Of course, we didn’t have all that much… (sigh)
So: Very impressed with the bolt design. What I thought was a white-elephant design (swiped from an AR?) turns out to be quite cool. Makes me kinda want one…
