Best 1911 for the money

Dan Wesson. Currently the best bang for the buck in production 1911's.

I just bought one of these Model #108282 SW1911 pistols myself. List price is $1,130.00, I paid @ $850.00 for it NIB with tax out the door. The Springfield Loaded 1911s are a little bit less than this; I have the 9mm version myself. I highly recommend either one of these 1911s as being good values. - skeeter_08

Compare the Commander Bobtail @$950 feature-by-feature and slide to frame fit with the Ed Brown Kobra Carry at $2400.

IMHO, the Kimber Custom II is the best deal on a NIB 1911. Followed closely by Springfield.

IMO, strictly speaking "bang for buck" you can't beat a Metro Arms Firestorm DXL for a shooter. About 400 bucks plus shipping and fees.
The only thing you don't get with them are wood grips and a well known name. Value appreciation remains to be seen but not likely.

600 bucks buys any grips you want and a ton of ammo.

They really are great guns once you get over the Phillipine/foreign made stigma as I had to.

I think the best bang for dollar right now is a used Colt Series '70 or '80 - $600 to $700 for prime condition guns. Same in Commander length if carry is important.

If I want a "tactical" gun, I think you should look at Dan Wesson, S&W, and the new Colt "Combat Elite." It is just hitting shelves and has been getting rave reviews. I have not seen one yet - they are hard to find and would require ordering, I believe.

I cant believe no body said the Taurus PT1911 IMO it has to be the best bang for the buck!

What is the purpose for your 1911 ? Carry, range, competition ? Full size or Commander ? Blued, SS, or alloy ?

I agree, but I would move the Combat Elite up to first after the 70 series.

People often confuse the two.

For the former, DW. For the latter, RIA or for a little more, STI Spartan.

Sorry, but would have to disagree. With everything that I have read and in talking to dealers, they seem to suck.

Taurus - $700 with everything a $2500 Ed Brown has.

What does it NOT have?

Beside a fancy name and a huge price difference, what does that "Ed Brown" have that the PT 1911 does not, for PRACTICAL purposes? Is there a guarantee that the "Ed Brown" will NEVER suffer a FTF, 100% certainty that it will NEVER jam, etc?

Colts have worked well for me......

A used semi-custom that's relatively unshot. There's tons of'em.

FIT and FINISH

I got my TRP (will all Ed Brown internals) for just under $1000, I also got my Fusion 10mm longslide for $1000 even. Just got a Kimber Custom II for $575 ... and I recently bought a NIB Sig Sauer carry 1911 for $675.

What I'm saying is there are TONS of great deals on 1911's out there. Research what looks good to you, then shop around.

What's the difference???? Better parts, better fit, better finish, better customer service, etc, simply a better gun. BIG difference from a production 1911 to a CUSTOM gun. If you can not see that then you never will. You must be new to owning 1911's

Taurus has a reputation for substandard parts, barrels, sears and safetys in their 1911's. They are not a gun that will last long term use.

A Taurus 1911 is like a Ferrari knockoff made by Yugo.

Back to the OP's question, if you want to be under $1000 for a new gun, I would go with an STI Trojan.

IMO most of the people that talk trash about the PT1911 have never even owned one, they are just repeating BS written by some other nim-witt on the internet. It is a fine pistol and it is not cheaply built, its just an affordable 1911 that shoots great.

I'd also vote for Dan Wesson.

But really, S&W1911, Kimber TLE, Springfield Loaded, and a Colt XSE would be nice as well.

They all feel and shoot differently, and all of us have our own preferences. What we like may not be suitable for the next shooter.
