Best 1911 for the money

This is my choice, the RIA tactical from Bellshire hardware for 475 shipped. I picked RIA over the Taurus just because of the reported excellent customer service of RIA. I looked at the STI spartan but I just didn't want the adjustable sights and I like the lack of no front serrations. I'm actually glad we have so many 1911 choices. David

Dan Wesson CBOB...I got mine for $860. Go online to whittikers.com. This IS the best pistol I have ever shot!!!!

I have 3 COLT 1911's and all of them fit your price and useage range. I also have a Les Baer that cost a lot more. I had a Kimber Tac Pro II that was the biggest dissapointment in a handgun I've ever owned.

IMO you will not buy a better 1911 for the money than a COLT. Here are my COLTs.

There are a lot of good 1911's out there these days, however a COLT is always a COLT and no matter how good of a gun the other guy builds, it will never have the name, historical value or resale. How many people fight over grandpaws ROSSI or TARUS?? Long after you are gone that COLT will still be YOUR COLT to everyone who see's it. No amount of money will buy that from another manufacture.

The "billboard" factor

I really don't care about the "billboard" nonsense on my PT 1911. Hey, by now we should all be quite accustomed/acclamatized to the "billboard" mentality. Turn to almost any TV channel; how much of it is "billboard"? Drive down almost any major highway; how much of "billboard" is visible in an array of creative fashions? So, why should I allow myself to be price-gouged to acquire a pistol that I WILL CONCEAL anyway?

Like I shared earlier, some of those around me who are on the opposite side of the gun ownership "argument" laugh at us for being "suckers for labels" and having mastered the "art" of self-deception.

Well if you plan on tricking your 1911 out you shoud consider a Taurus, Kimber Custom II, or a Springfield Loaded. All of these options come standard with pretty little additions such as extended beaver tails and skeletonized triggers and hammers.

Hey DWhitehorne that's one sweet RIA Tactical. Did Bellshire hardware put it together that way or did you add the extras?

Ditto. That pistol did catch my eye.

Nice job. :)

If you're willing to trust your life to a Taurus 1911 then it's the right gun for you.
And I'm still awaiting a genuine response to my inquiry whether "better fit, better finish, better this that and the other" - instead of "good ENOUGH fit, finish, etc." - will GUARANTEE 100% flawless performance {including at the time - God forbid - when it has to be used FOR ONE OF ITS MAIN REASONS FOR ACQUISITION - self-defence}.
Genuine response: no it won't guarantee 100% flawless performance. Nothing mechanical can ever be guaranteed to offer continuous flawless operation. I think you would agree however that anything mechanical that is made with better quality parts is less likely to suffer a parts breakage or malfunction. As already said above, if you're happy to trust your life to a Taurus then good for you - they're an inexpensive gun. And I'm not being sarcastic in any way. To each his (or her) own. It's called freedom :)

Goooooood Grieeeeeef!

Fellers, it's a lost cause! Four pages of posting and did anyone change anyone's mind one iota? Of course not. I've been in and observed a lot of arguments and never, ever, have I witnessed a change of beliefs...it simply ain't worth it nor does it serve any purpose. If we could divert some of this spent energy in the right direction, namely towards Obama, Biden, Pelosi and other idiots, we might get to keep our pieces. It's really funny to follow this thread from the original question down to the last post. I've learned the hard way that it is a lost cause to get into a pi**ing match with someone on "the other side of the fence". All it does is cause red faces and high blood pressure:fire:!!

I own a Taurus PT 1911 SS and love it. The only problem I've had with it (and I posted it) was a pin fell out of it while cleaning it. It was stupid of me to post the problem as I discovered that this pin is loose in a lot of 1911's regardless of brand, and tends to fall out while disassembling so it's no big deal......just use a large white sheet so you can find the pin when she falls. However, the thread deterioated down to name calling as this one has.

Life's too short at the best and I'm planning on enjoying the rest of mine, even if I do have to live with a PT1911SS. If it missfires, I guess I'm a goner but I trust mine. It seems to be very well built, doesn't rattle when I shake it, and shoots anything I've fed it so far without a hiccup. I'll admit I haven't ran 55,237 rounds through it but in all honesty, I didn't plan on that many rounds when I bought it:) And yeah, I'll also admit that I'd love to have a Colt, they're a beautifully built gun with a heckufa reputation but I spent the difference in price on ammo.....saw the shortage coming. And the "Billboard" doesn't bother me at all, can't tell it's affected it's accuracy in the least!

Let's go to the range and waste some powder, lead and paper!

Happy Shootin'

'Nother Taurus owner here.

Great gun for a great price. No, it's not a custom STI with $500 in tuning done to it. No, it's not on the same level as a hand-built and hand-matched 1911 with top shelf custom parts and the like. It's a production gun, and a pretty good one at that.

But then again, that's not why I bought it. It's a great gun with good sights and extra features standard that most makes charge a premium for. FAR more accurate than I am, that's for sure. It certainly took some time for me to adjust to it from a Glock 17.

Perhaps the guys that spent a whole lot more are jealous they don't have as much money for ammo. :neener:

I do have one regret -- in light of the new hi-caps coming out, I regret I didn't wait a little longer! :D

Flea......

Man, that HC 9mm stainless sure looks sharp.....may have to do some horse trading. Getting some "lumbago" in my joints and the lesser recoil of the 9mm would be nice!

I have plenty of money for ammo. If you have to worry about something like that you should only buy .22's.

Shall we try to continue a mature discussion?

Rebel71 opened the thread with a simple question. He just wanted individual opinions as to what 1911-type would be the best buy for the money. This is necessarily a matter of opinion. So, one may state one’s opinion. This is NOT an imperative to criticize, run down or pick apart the other guy’s choice.

It’s the old thing: Not only must some childish individuals endlessly repeat themselves, but INSIST on trying to make others acknowledge that the arguer’s choice is indeed “The One True Sword.”

In a courteous discussion -- even a full scale argument between poolite individuals, it is OCCASIONALLY possible to change the other person’s mind. Maybe with irrefutable logic, newly-presented information, of something of the sort. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an argument/discussion resolved by incessant “Is so.” “is not." “Is so.” exchanges.

Why not just state YOUR preference/opinion, and let it go at that? Nobody makes any points for being super-snarky with the other members. Certainly, personal attacks are out of line, and name-calling is not permissible. I’ll also point out that it is considered extremely bad form to make public the contents of Private Messages. No matter how childish, ugly, or inappropriate the PM, either ignore it, don’t even open it, or, if you absolutely MUST, report it to a staff member. Chances are, nothing will be done about it, but it might make you feel better. There’s no rule saying you MUST read PMs. You can see who sent the PM before you open it. And, for pity's sake, do NOT engage in silly argument and then whine to a staffer about some "ugly PM' you receive from the other guy.

Okay, because there is some redeeming value to this thread, I’ve cleaned it up by deleting most or all of the offensive posts, and we'll leave it open for a time. Here's a hint: If YOU have had a post deleted without explanation, it’s because it was inappropriate. Take the deletion as your personal warning.

There are some grown-up members trying to have a discussion here. Please don't interrupt them.

Im thinking about an american classic. from what I have read, people seem to like it. Its $350 at cost and $480 retail, for the deluxe which is what I would get. Any opinions?

PT 1911 all the way

PT1911 all the way 3,000 round and 0 FTF or FTE and 2' groups @ 25 yards. you know if my 1911 did not have the Taurus name on the side you high dollar 1911 guy wouldn't be able to tell the difference between your high dollar 1911 and the Taurus, my trigger breaks @ 3 1/2lb smooth and no creep and I would trust my life with it any day

I am interested in a 1911 as the next addition to my collection and possibly as a CCW. This thread has reinforced my intuition to do my own research. Although I value experienced opinions... seems as though if you own one... it gets a vote. +1 for capitalism... -1 for objectivity.
