Jerk at a gunshow

we don't know what a "membership" entails here and your first post seemed more to point out about making your gun safe than about how your membership includes some kind of background check to which we are somehow supposed to understand that you are who you say you are. I think that you were offended by this gentleman, which is your prerogative. You asked for opinions and people here seem to think that you're a bit thin skinned and I agree. It doesn't excuse what he did but I would have said no problem and gotten my deal done. Obviously as someone else pointed out, your pride prevented you from doing so. The dealer may have acted out of line but you couldn't turn the other cheek and be understanding as to why he did what he did.

I too would have more of a problem with the security guard than the jerk behind the table.

All in all a bad day.

Sorry

Most gun guys are nice folks

Try being a skinny little Korean kid walking into a gun store right after VT.
Boy, one of the most awkward visits ever.

"suddenly one of the security guy from the gunshow tap my shoulder and ask me to show him an ID....."

It would be a cold day in hell before I gave him the time of day, much less any form of ID. The word NO comes to mind.

They can always ask you to leave the premises if you refuse to provide your ID.

I'm sorry for not explaining it better.

Yes a WAC membership includes a background check (done yearly at time of renewal)

As a fellow foreigner, It makes me mad when a clerk I.D.'s me for cigarettes or booze.

I have gray hair and I am going to be 40 this year .... leave that crap alone.

But the spanish accent gets a pass in new mexico!

try being from the deep south and go up north. See what a thick southern accent will do for you.

We would just look at you funny and ask if the conversation could be held in English :neener:

I got some funny looks in the backwoods of Alabama when I was driving to Florida. I think they thought I was a Canadian.

Sometimes people make mistakes. At gunshows, dealers are getting twitchy... thank Bloomberg for that.

I think you had a right to feel a bit offended. I also think walking away wasn't the only response you could have done. From what you've said, it sounds as if the dealer tried to apologize, give you a bit of free stuff, and even make a better deal for you. He also had the pistol you had been hoping to trade for.

I think you both made a mistake on different levels. His profiling, but also you did... it might have been better to gracefully accept his apology. Sometimes, even bad first interactions can lead to a future friendship.

Hmm...possibly but more likely they just said "ignore him,he's just a yankee".

Sorry to hear about the bad experience, but definitely use the situation to your advantage next time. You can be offended at home with your new toys and buy ammo with the money you saved from his embarassment.

he look at it and he start mumbling about "guns smuggled for Canada or so", then he ask where I come from and I tell him that I was born in Italy

LOL

Maybe to him, you sounded Canadian? Do you look Canadian?:D

I'd be pretty pissed too, if someone judged me to be a criminal based on nothing more than an accent, and I think anyone saying they would just brush that situation off is kidding themselves.

He's going to embarrass you in front of a crowd because of an accent? In a crazy scheme to turn a profit, most gun companies made more than one of each gun. No need to buy it there.

That guy was just a jerk. I live in SoCal, it's a big melting pot, people from everywhere live here. A guy selling guns should know that you don't have to be a citizen to buy a gun, only a resident. He should be familiar dealing with people from all around the world. I think you reacted correctly, he might learn something from the loss of a sale, then again maybe he won't.

Thanx, Russ

That is funny because I'm actually a Canadian as well!!! (I have 3 citizenships):D:neener:

Well, some people collect stamps, too.:)

You must have had to watch the Olympics 25 hours a day!:D

saturno_v I can tell you exactly what happened and I can tell you it wont be the last time it does as it is all just a fact of life friend . Think of it like this if you were a bartender you would automatically card every person that wanted a drink when they were very near or below say 5 ft tall simply because as a rule most adults are larger than that at least here in America .

Apparently a foreign accent is the same way in the gun selling business and the dealer must have run into people who have lied to him B4 you and heck perhaps even had fake ID papers yet still got burned by the ATF with huge fines and threats of jail time .

If it helps though chances are the security guard felt bad for you and was himself was aggravated by doing what he considered the dealers job because as you pointed out you would have had to produce those ID's during the actual transaction phase if your deal had progressed to that point .

As one who has worked and served as security in bars I can tell you after while you've heard it all when it comes to excuses and BS stories from liars and after awhile in the biz you will have days when you just don't feel like dealing with it and will call security to deal with things that aren't even a problem yet seem to be fitting a pattern that fits one .

I've had people walk past signs that clearly told them not to enter the building if they were under 21 and I mean signs that were say 4x5 Feet in size with highlighted letters in Bold yet knuckleheads will push the laws to the limits all the time !

I caught a kid 2 years younger than the legal drinking age and when I asked him if he knew how old he had to be to legally drink that beer he answered me correctly , loud and clear and then asked what the problem was when I told him it was time to get up and leave the place !!

Usually these things don't happen but on occasion you just happen to be the customer that is just like some clown that was trying to pull something and the persons nerves were on edge and they were just at their breaking point for BS stories .

I know this doesn't make it right but it's just the way life is because if you had been trying to pull something illegal and the ATf caught you trust me they would still make the dealers life a living you know what know matter how good your fake Id's were you used to do it .

I once had a customer who had turned 21 hand me his fake ID he had been using for 2 years along with his now legal one after he turned 21 and just for fun I showed them later in the night to a actual Police officer and HE COULDN"T TELL the fake from the real one without calling it in ! Yet you could bet that if a cop having a bad day caught a kid with a fake ID of that quality he would still hit the place with a huge fine and perhaps cause them to loose their Liquor license and a whole lot of revenue !!

I wonder what kind of treatment an American would get in Italy under similar circumstances? I know for a fact that I will never again travel to Mexico, Europe, or Watts/Harlem or San Francisco. Because, I'm a WASP, cracker, gringo, white tourist, etc. People in the USA are some of the most racially tolerant people in the world.

The dealer made his mistake, an then realized it. I don't blame you for walking away...but first you should of aske for all his I.D.'s an asked to see his dealers license, asked if he was a wanted felon, ask if he was from Canada because it seems he knows alot about this....he would of gottin the mesage an apoligized an you would of felt better afterward when you walked away if you so chose to. But this is a part of life I guess....I remember a Pastor I had for 9 years...he was black, an around here its very mostly white. He would go to the bank (drive through) every week, an the same lady was very sorrowful looking an no smiles towards him, but he noticed she wasn't that way with others...he knew it was because he was black....One day he drove up all smiles as usual...halfway through he asked her why she never smiles at him an acts so scared..."Lady, I'm not here to rob you, I'm here to give you money."......she cracked up, an smiled an talked to him all the time after that....I saw people call him terriable names an he never let it get to him....he learned how to overcome an turn the tables for the good...

If you see a young looking individual, it is reasonable to assume they are underage.

If you see a guy with an accent, it is not reasonable to assume he is a criminal.

The situations are not similar.
