I have been on the prowl for a 9mm. I would really like to have a DA/SA hammer fired pistol with the capacity of having a hi cap magazine. It would be for range, sometimes carry, and possibly IDPA if I’m so inclined. Following the advise of try before you by and buy what you shoot well I went and rented a the following:

CZ75b
Glock 19
Sig 239

I really wanted to like the CZ but it was to big for my hand. The grip was okay (I have pretty small hands, I can fit almost my whole hand on an LCP or KTp3AT) but the slide release was way out of reach for me, I had to use my weak hand to release it and the safety was a stretch. It fired well and was accurate though it dropped casings right in my face and down the front of my shirt which was unpleasant. This was a big disappointment as I had talked my self into a CZ. It was a great gun but just to big for me. On paper I really wanted to like the CZ, DA/SA with decocker and hi/cap mag capacity. Just want I wanted.

I tried the Glock because I had never shot one before. I prejudged them and had previously decided, nope not for me. I don’t like the safety action design as its not a true double action. I’m also a bit leery of the unsupported chamber and the lack of a manual safety. (I like them, don’t always use them if its on a DA but I like the option). I went in prejudging the firearm and after shooting it I really liked it. I really liked it. But I can't get over the lack of a true DA on the thing. I shot it well, recoil actually felt like it was slightly more manageable than the CZ (a big surprise, maybe I was limp wristing the CZ).

I then tried the Sig 239 at the suggestion of the range operator. I really liked the slide release, safety and easily functioning decocker. I did not shoot it as well as the others but close enough that familiarity probably would solve the problem. It sat in the hand alright, but not fantastically. It also was a single stack with 8+1 capacity. Its also a bit more than I really wanted to spend.

So based on this experience, I really liked shooting the Glock but am uncomfortable with some of its features. However, I am revisiting the striker vs. hammer fired issue, are there any Glock like true DA or DA/SA pistols with moderately Hicap mags (more than 10 rounds)? What should I be looking at next?
 
Try out a S&W M&P. It is neither true DA (in fact it is closer to SA) nor hammer fired, but you can get it with a manual safety if you wish. They are reliable, feel good in the hand and are accurate. You may also wish to look at a decocker version of the CZ75. These would be the 75BD, 75D PCR and P-01. I have a PCR and like it very much. Lowering the hammer on a chambered round via the decocking lever starts the hammer from half cock, making the reach and stroke of the DA trigger much shorter.
 
Just FYI, the whole "unsupported" chamber gig really doesn't apply to the 9mm chambering in Glocks. It's mostly an issue with reloaded .40 ammo because of the higher operating pressure. As far as having no hammer, I wouldn't get to excited about that either. The benefit of having no hammer is you don't have to transition from a heavy long DA pull to a SA pull after the first round. Glock triggers work well, Iv'e rarely heard of one failing, especially if you install the NY1 or NY2 trigger spring. If you've ever fired a DA revolver or semi-auto and like the consistent weight of the pull, you'll like the NY1 spring. I also added a 3.5# connector spring to my G17 to keep the weight down. She runs perfect, always! As far as the lack of a manual safety, well, thats personal preference. Keep you booger hook off the bang switch and you're good....
 
I have a Glock 17 and a SIG 239. (also a SIG 226, Beretta 92, Luger and P-38:) )

From your choices, if I could only keep one, it would be the SIG P239. IMHO, the best single stack service/CCW type 9MM available today. :)
 
Whichever way you decide go with a .40 that converts into a 9mm.

Glock, MP, XDM, Sig are just a few that convert.

Let's not let Mr. Eastman down and turn this into a childish thread war that he gets to close...buy what feels good in your hand and what you can afford. Today's name brand guns will all do just fine. My wife shoots a MP...I shoot a Glock. I would love to try out an XDM...really have no reason to buy a Sig...great guns but if its not a glock then I'm getting an HK. Sig would be super cool but I have enough choices.
 
Don't worry about an unsupported chamber with the Glock 9mm. Its a non-issue in 9mm. The G19 is a stellar pistol, and I don't like Glocks, don't sell it short. Find a Gen 4 which has a slightly smaller grip and interchangeable back straps.

I personally have the M&P as recommended by some and I love it. I have short fingers and the M&P fits me nicely. I can't reach the mag release with my thumb but it is really easy to slide you ring finger up and hit the button. I can NOT do that on the previous generation GLocks. On the Gen 4 GLock I can actually reach and use the mag button with my shooting thumb and there are precious few other weapons that allow me to do that.

Once you get spoiled by the trigger on striker fired guns like the M&P and the Glock you won't even WANT to shoot a DA/SA gun anymore. The only DA/SA gun I have is my Bersa 380. Its a hell of a shooter if you want to consider a 380.
 
SIG P239 was my first SIG, I now have 7, it shoots like a much larger pistol, and carries easily. G19 is a great pistol for CC and IDPA, if you like it, I would not be the one to change your mind. CZ 75B is too big for a CCW as far as I am concerned, but the CZ 75D PCR is my one and only CZ, a near perfect blend of shootability, and concealability (may not be real words). If you want a pistol to double as a CCW and IDPA, I would pick the G19. If you want a compact pistol that is one of the best CCW you can buy then get the P239. Most shooters in IDPA and USPSA use either a striker fired pistol like the G19 or a SA only like the 1911.
 
Check out the FNX-9. Hammer fired DA/SA with 17 round magazine (and you get three of them). Changeable back-straps for different hand sizes. Made in the USA. They are an often overlooked choice but I've not seen a bad review of them yet. I have a FNP-9 and a FNX-40 and think highly of them.

If you are looking for a manual safety on the FNP series you will have to find a USG model. The FNX is equipped with a safety/decocker.

Fnp .40 converts into a 9mm as well. The fnx 40 at this time does not but it will soon.

I have. A fnp45 and love it....
 
It is my opinion that the Sig P239 and Glock 19 are two of the finest 9mm pistols ever produced, in terms of reliability and durability.

I can't speak to the 4 Gen G19, nor the Sigs since the frames began being produced in the U.S. vs W. Germany as mine is W. German (and there have been complaints about both the 4 Gen Glock and the new U.S. made frame Sigs - I am not saying they're valid), but I will put my P239 and G19 right alongside my CZ75 as handguns I will NEVER part with.

You owe it to yourself to check out the Ruger SR9c....

Yes, it's striker fired....but I don't see any real world advantage offered by a hammer fired pistol.

And no, it's not a true DAO since ity does not offer second strike capability....but I don't see any real world advantage to second strike capability either.
If I experience a "no bang" situation in a real shootout, I'm not going to waste time doing a second strike, I'm going to do a tap-rack-bang drill.

Since you've stated the CZ is too large for your hands, this may not add any value to the discussion - however someone who has the same question may benefit from this.

The CZ is really a great pistol - I love mine. It's not very concealable, as it's big and heavy.

P239 might be a solid choice for smaller hands and concealment.

What is the thing above the trigger and below the SR9c? Some sort of cover or lever?

I know I must sound like a broken record but look at the M&P's. Also, you can buy them with an external safety.

With the use of a regular FS M&P magazine (17 rounds in 9mm) and an X-Grip extender, you'll have the grip and capacity of a full sized weapon. Cool thing about that is you can take the full size mag out, slap in the flush mag that comes with the gun, and then conceal carry that thing in your pocket.

Glock 19. You can get one used for cheap, they are available anywhere, and you will always be able to sell it for a decent price. Not so with Sigs, Berettas, HKs, etc. (all good guns but harder to find and you will lose money).

The XDM9 is the only 9mm I own. If I had it to do over again, I would get a Glock 19. To me, it is the perfect 9mm pistol...period. It's not excessively large for the intermediate caliber it fires, and it's not too small as to have sharp recoil either. I have shot other Glocks and do not feel the same way about them...in fact the 19 may be the only one I like. Its only drawback is that it comes with plastic sights and polygonal rifling.

If you can, try them all. You may not like the Glock the best, but I'd start there because it won't be as expensive as buying a Sig and deciding you don't like it.
