I'm thinking of switching out a 9mm for a 40 cal. I like the caliber and it would allow me to keep one less type of ammo around. So throw out some ideas and try to sell me on your favorite 40's

I am leaning toward a 4 inch barrel compact
I like double single but am not exclusive
Polymer or steel its all good.

Just lookin for ya'lls two cents.

If you FN guys are reading is there a 40 similar the the FNP 45 usg?

My favorite .40 is the Sig 229. I have two, one issued and one purchased when the new gun was issued. I trust my life everytime I put a uniform on..... Top notch gun, very VERY reliable and accurate. My highest recommendation!!

I don't believe that you could go wrong with any .40 from Sig or Glock. I hear that Springfield and Smith and Wesson make nice .40's as well, but I have no first hand experience with these. Go to a well stocked gun shop and get your hands on them. I think you will find the right .40 will find you!!

There is an FNP 40 USG, though the FNX 40 is probably closer to the FNP 45 USG.

The FNP and FNX both have a 4" barrel, but are more of a mid size than compact. About the size of a SIG P229 or HK USGc

also about 75% of the price.

I bought a Stoeger 8040 six months ago,and haven't stopped smiling yet.

+1!

I would have gone for the .40S&W or .45ACP version when I got mine, but I wanted to add a 9mm to my collection. A great gun in any caliber that not too many people seem to consider, and it's pretty affordable.

I picked up an XDm in 40 over the weekend mainly because it was offered to me at a great price. I've only put 200 rounds through it, but it's recoil isn't bad. Comparable to my glock 19. It is BIG though, definitely not a carry piece for me. I haven't had a 40 since several years back when I had a beretta 96 with CT grips...another one of my all time favorites that I shouldn't have sold.

My favorite .40 line is the S&W M&Ps. Softest .40s I've ever shot, and they come in compact models. Worth a look.

I like the M&P's Ben86 mentioned. The M&P "Range KitsO are nice. You get an M&P along with a Maglula Uplula, Blade-Tech holster and Blade-Tech double mag holder. All of those items are a much higher quality product than what comes with the XDm package or any other package.

I recently bought the Glock 23. I'm sure eventually I'll get use to it. It's dependable (of course) but I wish I had spent more time trying out other .40's. Everyone that fires the gun hits what they aim at. Everyone but me. It would be great if I could shoot it like I do the G 26. I didn't fire the M&P .40 they had at the shop this week, but I'm going to asap. Liked the feel of it much better than the G 23. I may end up making a trade.

I have a sig p226 stainless elite and a S&W M&P pro both are very good guns with really good triggers

I love my g23 for EDC. Was split between the p229 and g23 for my first EDC and chose the g23 because of it's advantage in weight (or lack there of). But I'll get a p229 soon because I loved it as well.

+1 on M&P, less felt recoil than the XD and Glock. Fantastic ergo's, Full size is 15+1, You can get 9mm and 357sig conversion barrels, they can all use same .40 mag. Decent trigger, a little gritty but not too heavy, I've put some 800ish rounds through mine already, feels a bit better but I may just go and upgrade mine.

The XD does have cool safety features though, if thats what you're into. My M&P has no safeties and a 'no' profile LCI.

If you prefer DA/SA check out the FNX or FNP .40's, they were the third runner up in my shopping. They're pretty much an affordable USP. Another good option would be the H&K USP, very nice, but I tend to shoot better with my M&P than my father's USP.

my carry for many years was a Sig 239/40. i also have comped 9mm and 357SIG bbls for it. its now a IDPA gun and will likely get handed down to my daughter.

There are plenty of good .40 S&W pistols out there. I own and shoot all four of the listed pistols and recommend any of them. My favorite is the S&W 3rd Gen autoloader Model 4006.

Smith & Wesson 4006 (or one of its variants)
Beretta Px4 Storm
Smith & Wesson M&P40
SIG P229

The only .40 I have is a S&W 4013. It's the older single stack version. I like it alot. It's getting pretty hard to find one though.

The FNX is a very nice 40. I have one and it and the M&P's have mellow recoil compared to Glocks and Kahrs I have. It's DA/SA but can be carried C&L. I've been getting quality .40 ammo for under $12/50 shipped lately, it's a good time to switch. I have a Glock 17 and a couple Kahr 9mm's but I let my GF and friends shoot them, hav'nt shot 9mm in two years. Good choice, I like the 40 much more.

Get Glock or M&P compact and 40-9 conversion barrel.

This way one gun, two calibers! :D

Carry 40S&W and practice/plink with cheaper 9mm
