Reflex Sight On Revolver

Got a holster it will fit in? If so, I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I voted for iron sights. For self defense against animals you shouldn't be shooting further than you can accurately hit with iron sights anyway. It will also be easier to carry and find a holster for.

Otherwise the reflex might not be a bad choice. I like red dots on my competition guns, but you don't want to have to worry about batteries on a self defense gun.

I'll second that. Optics sound like an overly complex solution when just taking the scope off will work fine.

Of course if you just want to justify the purchase of a reflex sight, just admit that to yourself and do it. We're gun guys, we've all bought something that wasn't an absolute necessity at some point or another!

Iron sights work just fine for that. I've put down a 90lb feral dog moving at full stride with a set of all black novaks on a 1911. It isn't as hard as you imagine.

Honestly though, if I was that certain I'd run into feral dogs, I'd bring along something that allowed really fast follow-up shots. Those pesky dogs run fast and dart around.

I voted for just irons. For an SD pistol, you'll have no problems getting hits with iron sights. In my limited experience with red dots on pistols, I can tell you I can acquire iron sights a lot faster than I can dots. I'm sure if you train with the gun enough, pointing it will become natural enough that you won't have trouble acquiring the dot, but if it's a pistol you don't shoot often you may have to wiggle it around a little until you can find the dot. With iron sights, even on a pistol you aren't used to shooting with, you can easily find the front sight post, and bring the rear sights into alignment.

That was my experience with a friend's reflex sight on a glock 17L. But once I got the hang of finding that pesky dot, it sure was a real blast. I'd need to train on it a bit though. Every time I sat the gun down, shot something else and came back to it,,,I spent a second or three looking for that dot.

I do like relfex sights but I'm also a cheapskate.

A cheap reflex will be less accurate than irons...especially on a 44. That is something to consider. I'm a cheapskate and I know there is no way I'd spring for a pricey (read: quality) reflex. I'd be more apt to send it to a smith for a really nice set of adjustable target sights.

That one is on you, brother. I don't like ghost rings on a handgun. I tried them (ameriglo) on a friend's pistol and really didn't care for them. I'm old fashioned. I like a plain, black rear (or serrated) with a wide notch and a thin front sight post; preferably black front, but a gold/brass bead or tritium if necessary. Call me old fashioned...

Setups like that are fast to acquire and work great for precision work, as well. Of course, I don't know too much about revolver sight makers, so finding a supplier is up to you. But that should give you an idea of what you'll be looking at with a setup like that. Once you ditch the rear dots, you'll never look back and you'll start using a sharpie to black out the rear sights on everything you own. It really does help improve most folks shooting.

Mike, what is the make and model of your 44? It might make a difference on what sights are available.

If you're able to get a set for your gun, I can't think of a faster or better combat sight than the XS big dot express sight set. Incredibly fast and easy to use day or night, they're a bit spendy, but well worth it.

The original sights for the Taurus are adjustable. I take it you bought yours with the scope already attached, in which case I would just try to find the factory sights for it.

I had the XS sights and they are great, but I prefer the examples above because they are just as fast as the XS (if not faster) AND they are easier to do precision work with. You can do precision work with XS, but it takes patience and practice...and lots of expensive 44 ammo.

And the factory adjustable raging bull sights are pretty good, actually. Use your kid's crayon to black out the rear if they aren't already and touch up the front sight post with a red or orange one (or a marker). Give it a whirl and if you don't like it, wipe it off. Friend of mine took that advice on his rear sights and has been ranting and raving about how great all black sights are, too.

They also make a fiber optic insert for the front since Talo distributed one with a FO front. The rears are good to go, just head over to a taurus forum and find out where to get that FO front post. Shouldn't be more than a $30 solution. I beleive the front sight is pinned on so you can change that yourself if you pick up a $2 punch at harbor freight. That's my 2 cents

Yeah, just give the factory ones a whirl and add a fiber optic front if you wish. You'll find that it will get the job done pretty well.
