I have applied for CPL, which may take up to 2 months I'm being told.

In the meantime, I practice carrying my G17 in a cheap Glock Sports holster. The easiest way to carry it while still being able to sit down, get in the car etc., seems to be at 5:00 canted. For me at least - I'm 5'10" who's been eating well and exercising little lately.

The GS holster is great, but has two drawbacks. First, the belt has to be threaded through it, so taking it off / putting it back on isn't quick.

Second, it's open bottom so about 1.5" of the muzzle is exposed & rubbing against my jeans. I am sure in short time it will wear the finish. Also, there's a good chance of the front sight getting caught on something & broken (I still have the Glock plastic sights).

I like the idea of Kydex - it seems to be very gentle on the finish, it has a tight fit to the trigger and it doesn't flex like the leather does. Can someone recommend me an inexpensive holster that is clipped on, and is closed on the bottom ?

What do you consider 'inexpensive?' The best kydex holsters I've tried (and I've tried lots) come in right around $80 each. If that works for you, I'd suggest you contact Dale Fricke, explain what you're looking for, and see if he can build it (he probably can, and might even suggest a few improvements).

On glocktalk forum, there is a member named CoachG. He makes excellent kydex holster for about $40 shipped...they fit well, and carry great.
I own two from him, and couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the tips. I want an inexpensive holster because there's 80% probability I don't really know what I need yet. An "inexpensive" then is under $30. The Glock Sports holster would've been perfect if not for the open bottom. May be I will just glue something to the bottom, ugly but workable.

Working kydex is not rocket science, nor does a name brand and a high price mean it is "the best".
There are a lot of folks over at Glock talk who swear by CoachG.
This is the holster he made for me. He makes it is several variations to order. This one was made with the C clip with a vertical drop...I like vertical, because it gives me the option of wearing it strong side or cross draw. I really can't think of a single thing that could improve this holster. The molded fit is fantastic.

I'll second this one. CoachG is good people, and he makes good stuff.

Safariland looks really interesting.

With all the people wearing G17 at 3:00 I realized I must be doing something wrong. So I played and played with different positions until I got it to ride confortably. The grip prints somewhat but most people wouldn't know it from a smartphone (my wife didn't notice anything).

I also tried to glue a piece of black plastic like a strap to close off the open bottom of the Glock Sport holster, just for the kicks of it. I really liked the result, surprisingly - it didn't look ghetto, and it provided good protection for the muzzle. I used cheap crappy plastic just for proof of concept. Now I need to find a place to buy Kydex - I would need a 3" wide x 1 ft long strip of it. Does anybody know if there's a local place in Metro Detroit that sells Kydex sheets ?

knifekits.com has everything you need.

Use at least .10 for support pieces. Use .08 for OWB and .06 or .08 for inside the pants holsters. Use the rubber straps they offer on their site or build your own. The Tek-Lok is not a very good system IMHO.

Cruise various holster websites for ideas. Use fuel line hose (I think 3/8" internal diameter) for tensioning. Go to chicagoscrews.com and buy steel chicago screw sets that have a slot on both sides.

Actually, I plan on using Glock holster as a starting point, and adding a U-shaped bracket to the end (opened front and rear, closed on the sides and bottom). I tried it yesterday with some cheap black plastic just to see how it wears and feels. The idea is to (1) minimize the wear from slide rubbing against my jeans and other things and (2) make sure that the front sight doesn't catch on something while I am sitting down or standing up. Worked surprisingly well, so now I need to make this permanent.
