G17 concealed carry holster

Yep, that's what the trailing loop does.

Lots and lots of guys will recommend holsters like this, a holster without a trailing loop. Heck in this thread even...

Id highly suggest the new 7TS line from Safariland

Some guys will recommend the BlackHawk SERPA even. I don't know what they are thinking. Hey, you can use these kind of holsters for the range if you want, or if you want to wear a parka and a holstered G26, but it's going to be very tough to conceal a fill size gun without a trailing loop, and usually some amount of cant, to conceal a full size gun.

Here is some holster design information from Horseshoe Leather http://www.holsters.org/holster-design.htm

There are basically two effective designs used for OWB concealment holsters. Either a pancake, which is basically what your Glock Sport Holster is, and the Bruce Nelson #1 Professional style, often called the Avenger style. Both have a trailing loop that will pull the grip of your gun close to your body.

Blackhawk SERPA CQC; cant/angle/draw.....

I'm not sure what the forum post means about OWB holsters.
Different gun owners/CCW holders/agents-officers have different body shapes, heights, weights, etc.
Some like cross-draws or shoulder rigs, others like strong-side or "pancake" styles.
I used polymer holsters over the last few years & wore them strong or cross-draw with few problems. Modular holster designs that allow the wearer to change the height/angle/cant etc are practical & fast to change on the go.
I wore semi auto pistols strong-side in the FBI cant format & the standard up/down(no cant) style. I honestly prefer the regular no cant angle. It seems to fit my build & allows a rapid draw while seated or while standing. ;)
I used Blade-tech & the Blackhawk SERPA CQC version. I wore 2 M&P models: a .45acp compact & a full size 9x19mm with no effort. Since my job required driving often, I chose to wear the SERPA crossdraw(M&P compact .45acp). It rode secure on my hip without any hassles or drawing problems. My jacket & pull over concealed it when required. PA is a "open carry" state anyway so I was not leery of my holstered M&P showing. :uhoh:
The Blackhawk holster rode without discomfort or issues on my belt. The M&P honestly felt so natural I glanced down a few times to make sure it was still held snug. :D
I would agree that some quality holsters fit better than others but polymer or Kydex brands like Safariland, Blade tech or Blackhawk SERPA are great values to budget minded CCW holders or armed officers.

These pictures from member tmoore912 at post #29 in this thread

are some of the best on the "net". While they are all IWB holsters, they demonstrate where the grip of the gun will end up with a good concealment holster. The grip, which is the hardest part of the gun to conceal will be up against your body.

The SERPA won't do that simply because it isn't designed to do it. The grip of the gun will stick out, much like the OP found with the Safariland holster, like a diving board.

I may just end up getting a strip of Kydex, bending it into U-shape, and gluing it to Glock Sports Holster to protect the barrel. I have a lot of newfound respect for this simple and working design.

When it comes to concealing a full size pistol like the Glock 17, I find the Galco CombatMaster to be a very nice option to have.

I did what I probably should've done from the start and asked a guy at a LGS, he let me try a couple of holsters, and I ended up walking out with a Fobus paddle holster (a standard one, not Evolution or Roto). It is almost as easy to conceal as Glock own holster, it is very comfortable, and it is relatively easy to take off without having to undo my belt. It also provides a very strong retention. So between it and Glock holster, I should be all set.

Another tip of the cap for the Glock Sport/Combat holster. Won't take 8 months on a waiting list to get one, and you can't resell it for more than what you paid. Won't get the cork sniffers attention, either.

But those darn things work. Those holsters make a G19 concealable in the summer, and make a G26 downright disappear.

It takes all the fun out of custom ordering a leather rig though...

If you live in a colder climate consider a shoulder rig for your G17. I have a Desantis New York Undercover fits the G17 nicely just makes you look a little broad chested. It rides well and doesn't flop around. A long tailed snap front shirt covers well and if you are warring a winter coat no prob.

Ive been concealing a 17 for about 8 years using my IWB hybrids. Being fully adjustable for cant and ride depth helps with concealment. I also conceal with a full kydex OWB design I use that angles the belt loops forcing the gun to hug your body.

I just bought Glock's small holster that I use for my 19 and my 26. Paid $14.00 from Amazon.

I have two holsters for my G20. The Alien Gear is my favorite ($35). Its comfortable and wearing it at the 3 O'glock position the grip is easy to conceal even in a Tshirt. The other one is a LAG tactical. This one is full kydex which makes it easier to slide around however its not as comfortable as the Alien gear.

My best OWB close fit and most comfortable holster is a Don Hume h721 ot

New SERPA....

I just purchased a new left hand Blackhawk SERPA Sportster version holster for my new M&P Shield 9mm. I set it up for the normal/straight drop format and tried to carry it cross draw but that didn't quite work, :uhoh:.
Maybe if I lose about 40/50 lbs that might be a choice but the regular strong side CCW hid the Shield very well. I got the new CFC Sportster holster too. The material(composite) is the same as the more expensive SERPA CFC but it does not include the extra retention system. The rig is not as secure but it's fast & I won't use it for open carry. Just outdoor range and CCW/strongside. The price for the Blackhawk CFC Sportster was only $16.00 USD too. :D
I may buy a pocket holster later for the Shield for times when I wear a heavy coat or need to use the M&P 9mm as a BUG-2nd gun.
