I'm a fan of revolvers over automatics. I love my Single action. 45 lc and love the round. I want a 45 lc revolver small enough to conceal. I've had my eye on the s&w 25 mountain gun. Does anyone have any alternate suggestions or any time with the s&w? Im hoping for some personal experience.

The Mountain Gun is as good as it gets.

I have one in .45 ACP and I love it.

A friend has them in .45 Colt and .41 Mag and he loves them.

The thing is though, they are an N-Frame Smith, and N-Frames are kinda hard to CCW.

I have a 629 mountain gun. It's light weight which makes it nice to carry. Can be pretty brutal with full power 44 Magnum rounds. Should be pretty tame in 45 Colt though.

I love my .45 Colt Mountain Gun. Like RC says, its kinda big for cc, but I have tucked it comfortably in an OWB during the winter a few times. If you live in a mild climate it might work fine. I think Ruger still offers the Redhawk in .45 Colt, but it is even bigger than the N-frame - looks like a heck of a good gun though, especially if you like stout loads. Taurus did offer some fairly compact versions in .45 Colt, but I'm not sure how available they are.

Yep the Taurus is a Model 450 and the frame is smaller than the N frame of the Mountain Gun. It has a 2" barrel and requires the use of standard 45 Colt pressures. Have seen them around but they are a bit hard to find.

Thanks ill look into the Taurus, I'm pretty sold on the smith, its large, and might become just a fun gun. It sure looks sweet. Can the 45 colt also chamber the 45 acp or auto rim?

No.

The .45 ACP guns headspace on the chamber shoulder like an auto pistol.
Or use half or full moon-clips to hold the cartridges in position with proper headspace.
.45 AR cartridges have an extra thick rim to add the moon-clip headspace distance.

They are too thick to allow the cylinder to close on a .45 Colt.

I have a Taurus 450UL in 45 Colt that I pocket carry. You have to search them out as they have been out of production for several years.

Smith & Wesson 25-5, if you want to get away from a "Mountain Gun". This one has rounded off Magna grips that in theory make it easier to conceal, but anyway you look at it, it's a big gun. Great shooter though.

You just gotta have that belch fire lashed down or snapped in somehow. How do you secure it?

Mine is a Super Redhawk Alaskan, with an original-style GP100 factory grip, in .454/.45 Colt. (I reject the "LC" terminology.) I like a longer barrel on such a large frame, but this is what I have for now. The standard Redhawk has a grip frame too big for my hands; the same is true of S&W N-frames. A custom hybridization, with the SRH frame and Redhawk barrel as done by Bowen Classic Arms, might become a goal for me, or perhaps a Bowen-esque grip reduction, to make a Redhawk fit me, might work.

The Mountain Gun is a beauty. No experience with the Governor, but if it is anything like the Judge, no thanks.

My favorite DA only in .45 LC/.45 ACP is this converted S&W 625-3. It's still an N-frame, so it's not the smallest to CC, but it's not that difficult.

The biggest difference between the Gov & the judge is that the Gov can shoot 45 Colt, 45 ACP & 410.
Whereas the Judge can NOT shoot 45 ACP.

I saw on another thread somewhere (and i think this works for me)

There are better guns that shoot 45 Colt.
There are better guns that shoot 45 ACP.
There are better guns that shoot 410.

Now if you really want one that does all three, then I guess the Governor is for you.

Why can't 45 colt Mountain Gun be milled to take moon clips to shoot 45acp any still shoot 45 colt?

With the proper ministrations of a good 'smith, I'd imagine it could.

They can. This is the cylinder of the 625 I posted. Milled for .45 ACP moonclips.
