Idiot Scratch of ALL Time- 1911

Such a shame when people actually use their guns! The horror!
This is much more than just simple use of a firearm.

These are guns looked like they have been abused by people who didn't give a crap about their firearms.. lol

It can definitely save some heartache and embarrassment and allows for tactile feel in less than ideal lighting. Sorry my pics aren't as good as Log's (which can be found elsewhere on the Net) but I don't post content belonging to others and links to other sites just aren't fun. I've polished out my dad's Colt twice and though Uncle Sam learned him well and he carried one overseas arthritic hands don't always cooperate with a willing mind.

Cyclops, it's a great way to add a little assurance to a new customer that they will be more than capable of field stripping the dreaded 1911. I've seen several smiths offer this modification on their price list since I stumbled across Log's posting, usually charging around $15.

More like a firearm that is well used. Abuse would be trying to ruin it. It looks to me like it was used as a truck gun without a holster which in my opinion is fine as long as it's not chambered. My carry gun has some holster wear and has some scratches on the slide and polymer frame. Is that abuse too?

I am referring to guns that I have seen locally, not your own gun.

This wasn't normal wear and tear. These guns looked like they had been taken apart with a ball peen hammer. Or their finishes had been gouged with a screwdriver. And then they were being resold to people who didn't know the difference between normal wear and tear, and downright owner stupidity..

I did use the wrong size screw driver on my Hi Power's grip screws and it was scratched up quite a bit. It wasn't bad but you could still see it. It was already covered with scratches anyway from use. I didn't abuse it, I used it. I just see scratches on that gun that looks as though it was just stored somewhere without a holster. The idiot mark is something else but other then that, what's the problem? Abuse is intentional, this is not. Not every gun is pristine or has slight holster wear. If my gun falls out of it's holster when running and gets scuffed up, does that mean I should get charged with firearm abuse?

My new AK 74 that I got last week is developing character from use and I like it. If they were abusing that gun, you would see a lot more then just some scuffs and an idiot mark.

Most accidents are still preventable and it irks me to no end when other drivers decide my vehicle needs some honest wear in the form of door dings and bumper wrinkles. I don't try to hit stumps and branches when driving fire lanes-it happens-but I take no additional pride in losing paint or replacing busted shocks (broke one last week). An ounce of prevention, whether it saves a grip screw bushing or an idiot scratch, seems worth it to me. A final thought on those idiot marks on used 1911s: when I see them I can't help but wonder whether or not the previous owner knew what he was doing and that affects the price I'm willing to pay.

Skyb, Thanks for the tip. maybe now, my idiot marks won't get any worse. I had wondered how those guys got the slide stop to just drop in. Now I know.

Some OEM stops slip right in, in fact every SW1911 I've handled including the one demonstrated has but having rebarreled it and swapped out the slide stop made the modification a real improvement.

Glad you guys like it, if you ever run across log man online THANK HIM! He is a wealth of information and assistance who seemingly never tires of sharing with others.

I bought a kadet kit for my CZ PCR. As I was assembling it to the PCR frame in my old FFL's garage, I got it together, and immediately dropped it right on the muzzle end of the slide.

Onto his concrete floor. Not so bad, not a gorgeous finish anyway, but damn did I feel like a special little guy.

Thought you had to be 21 to carry in your state?

Skyler,

nice fix, I'm going to have to do that. My springer has a detent that stickes out so far I have to use a screwdriver to help it in. Yes, I did put an idiot mark on the slide once for this :p. Thanks for the elegant solution.

See, I don't mind a small idiot mark on the bottom, doesn't mean the guy didn't know what he was doing, he just wasn't anal about the finish on the gun. the slide mark takes more effort, and a 1x mark isnt bad, but making a habit of it would get me to worrying...

Apologies, I thought you were referring to concealed carry.

I open carry at the moment, although at the moment I would have to go through court to get my permit because of the chief being unchallenged and making his own rules, I can get a Pistol Permit (NH CCW).

Right on. In my state anyone over 21 who is not a felon may carry a weapon in their vehicle under peaceable transport without concealed carry permit. Therefore, I have my truck guns that I carry, but I do not conceal exclusively on my person even though I'm permitted. Other than maybe East St Louis, I don't go anywhere that I feel unsafe or threatened. Soooooo...my pistols stay relatively unscathed, but they do get used. Trust me, they get used!

Some people buy guns to shoot, dont care about the finish. Nice job fixing it!

Seen a youtube vidio of a guy properly breaking in a rifle, he threw it on the ground, beat the hell out of it, shot it, repeat!!! Maybe you picked up his pistol:)

I'm confused. Doesn't the slide stop on a 1911 just push straight in and out?
Both of mine have.

I've found the pin can extend too far. As if the counter bore in the housing is cut too deep.Would not take much. I've shortened the slide stop pin so it extends out of the tube to the drawing spec. measure it, mark it, chuck the pin up in a drill and slowly round the pin down. If you screw up, buy a new spring and plunger pin, they are like $5.
