I carry 24/7 for my entire 42 years of carrying legally in 2 states. Dosen't matter where you live. People get killed everyware. From the most expensive areas to the poorest. In your home or outside. No one can tell me they know that they are safe because they crossed the street ans are now in a low crime zone. Don't believe it, ask a cop, any time any place it may happen to you in a heartbeat, and you will feel like a fool, knowing you could have stopped it if you were armed, assuming you are still alive to feel anything.
No place is safe from crime and guns. It's unfortunate that most folks don't get it until somthing happens to them. Having a permit to carry and not carrying is just not too smart.Criminals follow you home, they go to good areas to steal, not where they live, "they know there's nothing worth stealing there". Don't carry at all, it's better than carrying on Mon, wed, and fri,I just can't help getting annoyed at people who think they know when their number is up.
If you aren't allowed to carry by law , that's a different story, school, work , etc. But By choice is just being cocky. Having the "nothing bad is ever going to happen to me" attitude will get you killed.Especially in this economy where people who would never have thought about stealing are finding themselves out on the street with kids and the family dog. Desperate times require measures to be taken to protect yourself and those who rely on you for their well being. It's nervy as hell to dismiss all of this and close your eyes to what is going on in this country right now. If ever there was a tim to take protective measures, now would be that time.

No point in having a permit if you don't use it.

In my state, there are advantages to having a permit beyond simply allowing you to carry. In general, they are:
-No waiting period when buying firearms
-Less restrictions on how you can transport in your vehicle

There might be more differences, but since I have a permit, I'm not worried about what you can't do without one. With that said, there are convenience factors associated with having a permit, so even if you don't carry, you're using it.

'RBid' Yes, overall, the bias could be larger.

I was originally thinking about bias coming from where the question was asked. I figured a mall based survey would draw the attention of people with the same level of enthusiasm as members here. And that a disinterested permit holder may be more likely to visit a mall than a gun website, but still walk past a mall based survey.

Polling CCW class participants could give better insight. I've never been asked what my carry plans are. Instructors may not want to intrude or may not think the data would be useful. If the percentage that actually carry is low, I could see an "anti" screaming that permits are not needed since they're not used anyway.

Wonder if this same poll asked in the THR "Hunting" section, with the qualifier added to limit respondents to hunters with permits, would give different results.

Had to chose 50-75% because like others have stated, it's illegal to carry in a government facillity.

The 100% option was for "100% (excepting places where carry is illegal)", so you could have chosen that option.

BTW, results aren't skewed much by asking on a gun site. His question has a qualification: "Assuming you are a permit holder ...". So, if this question was asked in a mall, the 90+ percent of the population without permits would keep walking. Qualified respondents would be members of the same ilk that gathers here.

Aren't skewed? I am not so sure. My suspicion is that the results are probably skewed. When my wife and I first got our CCW/CPLs, we did so more to be able to carry if we ever saw a need. We were in no hurry to even go gun shopping -- then we had a rather bad scare, went gun shopping, and began to carry when and where legal (and permissible).

I suspect that there are a lot of people get their licences/permits, as did we, "just in case;" don't get the scare we did; aren't really interested enough to read gun forums; find carrying a bother; so they don't carry ever or often.

"Qualified respondents," CCW holders, would not necessarily "be members of the same ilk that gathers here." I am not sure that "ilk" is the word I would choose. How about saying that we are "more finely selected." :)

Since none of the less than 25% are responding, I will. I am less than 25% of the time. Partly because of work. Cant carry at work. It is what it is although I am transferringt to Texas where I can keep a concealed handgun in my car no matter what work says(after I gett my CCW there). ALos, I spend about seventy nights a year out of town at work which kills even off work times those days. I also go out a couple of nights a week and cant carry while at a bar.

I always carry when I am driving any kind of distance. I almost always carry when I go shopping, especially at night. And, thats about it I guess.

I totally understand why so many of you carry all 99% of the time. I just dont have that natural desire to be prepared for everything that can happen in life. I live in a pretty safe area but I understand anything can happen at any time. But when I am getting dressed to take my kids to the park, or the pool and its 98 degrees outside, the last thing I want to do is worry about concealing a handgun. Il take my chances.

Save the 'you will wish you had it the day...' threads. I totally understand the risks. We all take risks.

Every day. All day. Except where unlawful.

My work has a policy against. But, I know for a fact that if at a company meeting we were all asked to empty our pockets and do vehicle inspections, there'd be as many guns as people - if not more. I actually helped my boss acquire his carry weapon.

I could go on, but Rbid already said it, "Crazy is hard for sane people to predict." Btw Rbid, I'm stealing this quote.

Since I carry everything from an LCP, LCR, 642 w/CT, PT709Slim and a Glock 26, depending on where and what dress code. I went to my Cardiologist this am NOT carrying. So I guess I fall short of the 100% !!!!

The difference is that a lot of permit holders have permits because they might want them, or it will be a convenience if they go firearm shopping, but aren't gun nuts. The majority of people who frequent this sight are gun nuts.

99% of the time, including church, weddings and funerals.
Don't frequent courthouses, jails etc. too much so 99% is pretty accurate.

I am really having fun following this thread. Work has been painfully uneventful, so I thank you all for keeping me mentally stimulated.

100% of the time, too old to fight and too fat to run. After 40+yrs just like a pocket knife. Retired, in the country, varmints and dope heads that think every older person is loaded with pills. I never have one out of reach and don't feel dressed without one.

100% when outside the home (excepting places where carry is illegal).

While at home a gun is always nearby and when the pants go on the gun goes on with them.

I recently spent two mornings in a Federal Reserve Bank, and two days at the National Archives in Washington, DC. Those are the only times in recent memory I haven't been carrying. Ordinarily, in the immortal words of Inspector Lestrade: "If I have my trousers, I have my back pocket; and if I have my back pocket, I have something in it."

I answered between 50 and 75 percent because..the percentages are somewhat subjective. For instance, am I stating the percentage of time I carry when I am outside my house, while I am awake or while I am in a situation where I can carry such as not at work? I carry nearly 100% of the time that I am not at work and/or in business attire but that makes up a small percentage of my day. The larger percentage of my day is spent at work where I am forbidden from carrying or while dressed in a shirt and tie after leaving work. These considerations skew the numbers.

Does having a weapon in my console qualify as carrying? This could increase my percentage during the day while dressed in business attire but away from my workplace.

These factors make the poll nealy impossible to accurately reflect true percentages.

Now that I've read most of the posts, I'll risk sounding snarky because based on some of the bravado I hear in those posts the question just has to be asked.

So are you 100 percenters, all day everyday crowd claiming you carry in the shower? Just asking.

'Skribs', 'cambeul41' As I said in post #55, "I was originally thinking about bias coming from where the question was asked."

Once permit holders are released into the wild, willingness to participate in surveys is correlated more with interest and enthusiasm about the subject. I'm thinking a person's enthusiasm does not depend on where they are (ignoring situations where the person may want to keep their interest in firearms private).

In other words, the person who has a permit, but a low interest in guns less likely to be represented in polls taken on gun websites or in surveys taken anywhere else.

I'd imagine the best place to get a handle on the permit holder population would be as they leave their CCW permit class.

100% where legal, but I know 3 people that have CCW's and don't carry on a regular basis. But I think that's the exception not the rule.
