I've been in a debate on another forum with someone that believes issuing CCW permits in his state would lead to more violent crime.

He wasn't swayed by the facts I gave him (State of Florida, crime rate for permit holders), and get the feeling he just doesn't like the idea of 'regular' people carrying around firearms.

So what do you tell (or show) people to convince them CCW permits aren't the end of the world, and might even be a great idea?

I've invited him here, wether he shows up or not I'd still like to talk about it.

(on a side note, I believe the Second Amendment is permit enough for anyone, but that's probably a different discussion.)

Ask why they they think the licenced ccw holders who would hurt others aren't carrying concealed handguns today, without a ccw license.

Somebody who isn't interested in facts isn't likely to change their opinion.

You know - "I've made up my mind - don't confuse me with the facts".

My time and energy are too valuable to squander on people who are impervious to facts.

(on a side note, I believe the Second Amendment is permit enough for anyone, but that's probably a different discussion.)

As far as I'm concerned, it certainly ought to be.

Riddle me this. I live in a community with an active air force base.
We have F-whatever's roaring around all the time. Armed with a vast & deadly array of God Knows What, at any given time. The 20mm Vulcan cannon, capable of spewing 6000 rounds per minute, being the least of the leathal options. But hoo-haw, living on base & carrying a weapon? Sirens, Air Police SWAT teams, & horror on every official face. The base would be threatened.

However, the base is located in a state where CCW is a fact & used by many members of the city. Said members who should not feel threatened by pilots who are not trusted in their own community (the base)? Can we say oxymoron?

This is a first-class head shaker. 900F

If he's from Illinois (there aren't that many states like us left) remind him that most years you can total the murder rates for Indiana, Kentucky and Iowa and get a number lower than the rate for Illinois. Now, he may not believe that Illinois' lack of CCW causes its disgustingly high rate of violent killing, and he may not believe that Indiana has lower crime because it issues CCW permits. However, he can't deny that the CCWs do NOT make those states more violent than Illinois.

Preaching or discussing with a person who refuses to think and reason for themselves is a waste of time. Even if they do those things, there is no guarentee of changing their viewpoints.
I do not have a source for this information, but the rate of violent crime committed by CCW holders is less than that of the general public. This is in spite of the fact that gun (and other weapon) ownership is much higher.
Criminals do not need a liscence to break the law. In fact, they tend to choose which laws to break to achieve their goal. A CCW law or lack thereof will not prevent them from carrying a gun.

Riddle me this-
- Why is it that the first thing people who don't carry do when they're in trouble is call for someone with a gun to come bail them out?
- Why are people who respect the law enuff to get a carry permit more likely to hurt someone than one who does not obey the law and carries a weapon illegally?
- Why do people who don't believe in God or guns often end up praying very hard to God for a gun when TSHTF?
None are so blind as they who will not see:banghead:
