I'm looking to get a night vision scope for home defense. I would like to spend no more than $2,000. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

dedicated night vision or are you going to want to mount it in conjunction with something like an EO Tech or Aimpoint?

Here is what I have as an example:
-Armasight NYX14 Gen2 (enhanced image version) with manual gain control. I personally prefer having manual gain vs an auto adjusting unit. I just find that the auto adjusting units are not as consistant. Just my experience. I use this unit in conjunction with my Aimpoint T-1 Micro. It's a nightvision minocular that I can either mount to the weapon with a weapons mount or I can use it as a head mounted unit. I can also throw a magnifier on it if I need to. I like the fact that it's a mulit purpose unit.

-Armasight CO-MR Gen2 (enhanced image version) with manual gain control. I use this on my magnified stuff for what I call medium range work. I use it on my Vortex Razor 5-20 (good up to 12x) and on my 1-6 swaro, as well as my NF 5.5-22 on a Sako TRG. I like the unit and it meets my needs. Came with a decent clip on illuminator as well as a wireless remote. This unit is really just a converter and used on magnified optics.

Anyway hope this helps.

I really wasn't sure. I see many guys attaching it to an Eotech. Which is better between the two?

Neither for home defense. By mounting it on the firearm you muzzle everything you look at. Wife, kids, neighbor's dog.

A better alternative, I believe, is a PVS-14 and IR laser combination. The PVS goes over your non-dominant eye, and the IR laser mounts to your weapon. Safer, and the sensitive night vision device isn't subject to recoil.

The Armasight NYX14 is basicly a pvs14.....see above

If your NVD is mounted on your gun, everything you see you are also pointing your gun at.

Another thumbs down for an NVD is that it gives your position away, in a home defense application. Can't really sit in the dark if a little screen is lighting you up and it is detrimental to your natural night vision.

Motion sensor equipped lights inside and in the areas of the house you are concerned about. That way you know where they are and they're on display.

i buy most of my night vision from frankie @ ASM. He has some pretty dang good deals in my opinion. 256-438-4024 call or txt

Brand new Pvs14 mx11769 autogated tube .. Minimum 64LpI 26 SN. $2150.00 !!!!!
New Omni-8 GRADE A pvs14 systems start at $2800.00
PVS14/6015 sytems GRADE B start at $2000.00

i'd strongly suggest starting with a PVS 14 mounted on your head. skip the weapon mount stuff. that way, you can see with or without a weapon. and you can use a pistol or rifle as appropriate.

What Site is Best for Home Defense?

I just posted a question similar to this so please forgive my redundancy. I was at my mother's house last night with my wife, and the security alarm went off at 5:00 AM-due to Sandy knocking the power out. I grabbed one of my AR15s, with a Surefire light attached to it, and went downstairs to check everything out. As I said, the alarm went off because of the electrical outage. However as I was going downstairs I realized that if there were intruders, my light would completely give away my location.

So my question is this, keeping this in mind, what kind of sight would you suggest for home defense? The lights are often off in my house, so I am leaning toward something which would allow me to see in the dark. Ideally, I would like to stay under $2,000.

Big thanks in advance!

Are optics really beneficial at home defense distances? I'm not convinced. My home defense AR has a white light for target ID and illumination. I use the A2 sights.

If you want to see in the dark and you have a white lite on your rifle, then that's what you use to see in the dark.

jmorris, what would you suggest?
A brass bead sight on the end of a shotgun barrel is pretty hard to beat if you ask me. If you can find your way from the bed room to the kitchen to get a drink in the dark you would be better off spending your $2000 on something that tells you when someone enters your house than NVD's.

For home defense optics I wouldn't rely on anything I had to turn on and adjust much less operated on batteries. I know, my aimpoint battery lasts seven years but the second I really needed it, it would be dead. A shotgun was point and click long before the Internet.

Unless your house is huge and you have plenty of time to turn on and adjust a NVD, a brass bead on the business end of a shotgun barrel would be quite an advantage.

Like I said in my other posts, the real advantage comes from knowing someone is outside near the house or inside. I have IR sensors that I originally built for hog hunting but with an IR sensor lense change will trigger off of animals as small as an Armadillo. The sensors along with a gun and flashlight work better than my NVD would. Knowing when and where something is, is just as important if not more so, than seeing it.

This can become a discussion of tactics in which we tell you that you're supposed to hole up with the family in a safe place to make any BGs come into your prepared field of fire and NOT supposed to go prowling around your or anyone else's house looking for intruders, but you can read all of the professional and talented/trained amateur advice in Strategies and Tactics telling you that what you did is the last thing you're supposed to do.

You can purchase an inexpensive CCD NVD for you and an IR light for the weapon so you can see without having to use a white light all the time and you won't be pointed a loaded weapon with an itchy trigger finger attached to it.

You can go the more expensive route like taliv and some others have and purchase best available technology NVD. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=680626. That gives you the ability to see well while holed up and protecting your family instead of prowling around in the dark to get whacked over the head with a lamp.

I was not "prowling" around my house looking for intruders, I had to go downstairs to check why the alarm went off. My guess was that it was going off because the power was out due to the storm. However, if the alarm had been set off by an intruder, I wanted to be armed for my trip downstairs. This is when I thought it might be better to have night vision if was put in a similar situation again.

(yeah, i agree with hso and my post was not in any way intended to condone really bad tactics in a home invasion scenario. i avoided that altogether and simply answered the question about the hardware. though i own and practice with NV, there's no way i would respond to a home invader with it. that said, i have found many, many other uses for it and it's become an invaluable piece of gear for me. so i still recommend it.)
