I have a kimber ultra carry 2 which i can not get to cycle by hand with hollow points. In doing some searching i have seen that i should replace the factory mag with a wilson or a chip mcormick. I have tried emailing mcormick but they must be pretty busy and havent heard back from them yet. My question is what mag do i need to order?? Can i assume any officers type mag will work in this gun?? Thanks in advance for any help. And i dont have a problem with going wison if it is a better mag but for the price i can almost get two mcormicks.

Yes, you are looking for an officers magazine.

Tripp Research is probably the top brand out there followed by Wilson. McCormick is pretty good.

Keep in mind both Wilson and Mccormick have various models of magazines, you are not looking for their low end gi style (similar to Kimber mags).

Yes, Officer/compact size mags are the correct ones for the Ultra Carry. While available direct from McCormick, they are also available from a variety of other on-line retailers, Brownell's, MidwayUSA, etc.

Another option, if you are having feeding problems is to buy 6 round Officer mags as they are the designed capacity for that size gun.

Top Gun Supply has a good variety of CheckMate mags to choose from.

I have three Kimbers, a HD Pro Carry, an Eclipse and a Classic Custom. I had feed problems with all of them using HP or SWC ammo. Like you, my initial research indicated the need to change to a higher quality magazine. I settled on the Wilson ETM 8 round SS Magazines and later added "Tripp Kits" https://www.trippresearch.com/index.html .

For the most part it fixed the FTF issues except on the HD Pro Carry. I still had issues with HP and SWC so I took it to a gunsmith and discovered that the jump distance from the feed ramp to the chamber was out of spec. It should be .030 and it was almost flush. I sent it back to Kimber and they fixed the issue. Been feeding like a champ ever since.

The only other time I had a lot of FTF issues was with using older brass in my reloads. I was having some "Case bulge" that prevented proper feeding in some guns but not others. Went to new brass again and problem solved.

As a side note: I really like the Tripp Research kitts. The drawback to using them is you will loose one round in your 8 rnd. magazine capacity. Limiting you to 7 plus one. For me Id rather know that 7 WILL go down the pipe that risk FTF for one extra.

That could be your problem, I'd take it to the range and shoot it before I assumed I had a problem.

Other than that, I've had good luck with McCormick and Wilson mags.

The alloy frame on the Kimber is very prone to chipping due to the metal followers on the stock Kimber mags. I now use Wilson mags with the rounded follower. I also ordered new rounded followers from Wilson and replaced all my officers mags stock metal followers with them and I have no issues with feeding anything and no chipping of the feed ramp.

I'm not sure that is a problem with stock Kimber mags, as I thought they used CheckMate mags with either a GI follower or the patented CheckMate follower. Neither of which have a reputation for tipping out of the tube and chipping aluminum frames.

On the other hand, the one mag/follower with a reputation of chipping aluminum frames, is the Devel follower used in Chip McCormick mags. If you do have an aluminum framed Kimber you may want to look elsewhere, or at least get the PowerMag Plus follower for your McCormick mags.

I'd go with the Wilson mags.../ I run them in all of my 1911's in 9mm and .45 acp ( Wilson , Ed Brown, Les Baer & Kimber ) and they've all done real well

2wheel...that is my intention to try first but heres the deal. Gun came with one Kimber mag. I bought 3 more mags (don't know but I believe they say Colt on the bottom) when I picked up the gun. Not one of those mags will allow me to put the first H.P. round into battery so that is were my assumption that I will have problems once that first round is fired. All of those same mags will let me cycle round nose without a problem.

I use shooting star mags in the custom classic with a steel frame, but I don't think I'd use them in an aluminum framed gun. I think 1911tuner could clarify...

For what its worth.........

I have a Ultra Carry 2 myself. When I bought it I didn't know that Kimber factory mags were junk so I bought 2 more at the same time. In the years since I have bought 1 Tripp Research, 2 Wilson Combat (47ox) 1 Chip McCormick shooting star pwr mag and 4 Kimpro Tac mags. The only ones that gave me trouble were the McCormick and the original Kimbers everything else runs flawlessly. I just put Wilson Combat spring and follower kits in my original junky Kimbers but have yet to get to try them so the jury is still out. I can't speak highly enough for the Tripp, Wilson or Kimpro mags as there all excellent. I've never understood why a company would couple a $1000 firearm with a .02 cent mag? :cuss: Oh also, I've heard good things about Actmag's and would suspect that Mec-gar mags are good too as both companies manufacture mags that come factory standard with some guns.

Hope this helps.............. JRod

Thank you all for your replys. I am gunna order a couple mags tonight. Hopefully wilson if i can find and see how that works. I will use the mags i have for target for now. Jrod if you could let me know how the spring upgrade worked for you when you try them that would be great. Would also consider that.

I believe the new CMC Power Mags are safe for aluminum frames.
It is the PowerMag+ follower that is safe for aluminum frames.

The KimPro TacMags are a CheckMate product. If the KimPro label doesn't matter to you, and you want to save a buck or two, you can get the same mag from CheckMate.

I generally buy my 1911 mags from Top Gun Supply

Your Wilson follower kit will fit the stock Kimber mags and you should have no issues, at least I have had none.
When the CDP came out, the factory mags that came with the gun created issues in that the follower would contact the feedramp after the last round was fired, creating the potential for frame damage. The fix is easy and low cost.
As for the ammo question, You may try some of the polymer tipped versions.

Ok will do....

Jrod if you could let me know how the spring upgrade worked for you........
Just so you know, I have no idea when I'll be able to get to the range again. And I may not have all-timers but quite certain I got part-timers so I'll write myself a post it to remember to post my results and contact you.

Keep your powder dry,....... JRod

What are the issues with the factory Kimber mags? and how long does it take for the problems to present themselves?

I have an Ultra Carry II with 2 factory mags and I only have a few hundred rounds through it so far, with about 50 being HP (a mixture of 185 xtp and 230 golden sabers)

I have yet to have any FTF issues or any other issue for that matter. Is it spring quality or something else? Not doubting anyone I just want to be informed.

I can't speak to how you hand cycled your test rounds so that may be the only problem that exists. Kimbers are known to have chambers on the small side which will increase the potential for feed stoppages. A well built variant should not be brand centric so long as the magazine and spring are of good quality.

If you decide on new magazines it would be preferable to purchase one of a perspective brand and test all functions including looking for contact with the ejector when inserted. The ejector can be filed if contact is light but forgetting to check can damage it beyond salvage.

Hand cycling rounds tells you nothing at all. Trust me on this. See how it functions with live fire.

I guess i am a little lost here. I have only been shooting for 30 plus years. I understand hand cycling does not show you whole picture of gun. So here is how i do it. I load mags with hollow point. Even have tried loading mags one shy to see if it would make difference. I put mags in gun and pull slide back off of stop and let the gun shut by itself. Problem is it will not shut. (go into battery) So that is where i am at. I dont have a problem putting first round in by hand and seeing what happens but when the gun is done shooting and slide is locked back next mag is same thing. You can visibaly tell that bottom of hollow point catches bottom of feed ramp. So first thing i am gunna try is two new mags. Ordered them last night. Second thing will try polimer tip bullets and see where that gets me. If i have to i will send to kimber but from a lot of what i have been reading i think the new mags will slove. Thanks again for everyones advice.

Dab, some folks think riding the slide is hand cycling so no one wanted to be presumptuous about your method. Sounds like your describing nosedive. Pictures?

Oh I understand that. And don't think I am coming off as better then others. Or that I am taking this the wrong way. I get what is being said and thank you all again. Nosedives?? that sounds like a good way to describe it. I ordered a couple mags last night but I will try and get a pic of what is going on but nosedive is exactly how I would explain it I guess. I found a lot of info on a lot of different sites last night and I think these new mags will take care of my problems.
