If you were going to buy a Glock primarily to have a uber reliable semi auto handgun that will run and run and then run some more which one would you buy? Is there one Glock that has the reputation for longevity more so than the others?

They started having problems with the Gen 3, so I would go with Gen 2 G17 - a lot of Police departments use that thing and have had very few problems.

I would guess the 19 and the 17 would get that title. The few KB's that occur are almost always in .40. The few times I've seen anything break (like the cross pins) have been .40.

I think, as a whole, guns run thier best in the caliber they were originally designed for. Walther PP and PPK in .32. 1911's in .45. Browning HP in 9mm. K frame Smiths in .38 special. Etc. Not to say others aren't very reliable, just my experience.

The reliability of the Glock platform comes from the G17...it has the loosest chamber and the fewest reported function problems.

Of the other most popular Glocks:
The Gen2 G22s started the kaboom rep; Gen3 G22 had feeding problems when weapon lights were attached

The Gen3 G19 started the Brass-to-Face (which are really cartridge control issues) and it has continued into the Gen4

I would go with the Glock 17 as probably being thee most reliable of all the different models.

I would say gen 2 glock 17. The new production Gen 3 and 4's have MIM extractor's which can be one of the main causes for the brass to face issues, my g17 gen 3 has such poor extraction it has causes it to jam a couple times and the slop in the extractor is unreal there shouldn't be a mile of play between the brass and the breachface allowing the case to slip up or down when the slide is pushed rearward making the ejector impact location change about every shot and putting brass all over the place.

Ditto. I have NEVER had any issue period with Gen 3 17. Period.
there's only about 10 zillion of them out there. No Jams, FTF, FTE, nothing. Just Glock perfection!

I've heard that the Glock 10mm pistols have always been damn near flawless.

99.9% of the time when someone complains about their Glock, it turns out that they are using their own handloads.

My experience is with the Gen-3 G-17, G19 & G21 I've not experienced the issues that some have given as examples. It is tenuous at best to make a pro or con analysis based on a limited sample. All I can ascertain is that my examples have not been problematic in function. As for the ammunition employed WWB, Blazer, Remington, Federal and etcetera plus reloads with multiple brands of mixed brass.

BTF is not a reliability issue IMO

I have a G34 Gen 3 and a 17L Gen 3 and never had a single problem with them, and I've fired them dry, I've fired them oily, and I've fired them gooped up with grease and they've never failed.

But I still think if you're talking reliability - the Gen 2 G17 was very reliable.

I'm pretty sure that if I knew that I was headed for a gunfight and had my choice of a box of the worlds best pistols (unfired) I would pick up the G2 Glock 17.
I think that's a fair way to appraise a reputation.

I've never had an issue with a Glock. I've owned them in 9mm and .45apc. I really WANT not to like them, but I can't help it. They're just so reliable and convenient to carry.

All of mine have been flawless, but I don't think I have more than a few thousand rounds through any of them

another vote for gen2 17. although my gen3 23 has been flawless with thousands of rounds downrange.
