Most reliable semiauto pistols

I agree wholeheartedly with the empty list...

I do agree that most modern guns, from the major manufacturers are good to go outta the box these days... If there is going to be a problem it will show up soon. or upon an ammunition change..

ALL GUNS WILL FAIL EVENTUALLY.... you have to do your job... Keep it Clean, properly lubricated, and do your job as a shooter..

The VAST majority of semi auto malfunctions that I have seen, especially with 45 chambered guns are stovepipes... and that is just about always a shooter error, riding (anticipating) the recoil, or a less than firm grip and wrist.

Unfortunately as stated above they can all fail. My Colt Python popped the end off the firing pin in the middle of an ISU match.
I can not recall the last time either one of my Colt 1911s failed but I'm sure that they have over the last 30+ years.
My latest 1911 (STI) is still new but it has been fail free so far.
I believe that the secret of reliability is clean, oil, and maintain

I have a Ruger P944 & a XD-40 that I trust. I also agree with post number 4 most of the major makers pistols should be fine. Whatever you get spend some time at the range & wring it out. You will know if there is a problem.

I looked at this question as having potential of life & death consequences if I got the answer wrong. So I checked the consistent World's Champions in International shooting competitions. Then I checked the same in American competitions. Then I checked who was the top choice by NATO & Law Enforcement & Government agencies world wide. Then I checked 'Local' reputation in America, what the owners down home had to say. Then I examined the products & designs & materials. Then I reviewed the nature of complaints. I figured most everything else after the above was just so much smack, nothing more.

For me the consistent answer and obvious choice from all research was the same: CZ, and we lived happily ever after.

I have had good experience with everything I own, but the most rounds with out any kind of failure has to be an XD 9 SC. I owned it for about a year and easily put 2000 rounds through it with not a hint of a problem.

The only gun that I have any issues with is a 40 year old Ruger pre-MK 1. It is pretty picky about ammo, but fortunately for me likes Remington bulk .22

Rugers have been around longer then Glocks , so i have to say Ruger is the most reliable pistol out there.

Ruger is the most under rated pistol, if its not expensive its not a reliable pistol? NOT!

I use issued Glocks a lot and had pin breakage failures on them that rendered the guns useless.
I am surprised no one mentioned the Berretta 92 the Army uses.
The Berretta is non stop action in the sands. It is extremely reliable.

Mabe its tolerances have wore down but my Molina 45 1911 stye from the 1920's eats anthing and everything.all the time.

My vote goes with "Fishbed's" in that I have a Walther P99 AS in .40 cal that goes bang every time and has since I purchased it last year. Everytime I go to the range it feels better, and despite being hammerless, it has so many neat features, I highly recommend you try one for yourself.

My HK USP 9 has NEVER malfunctioned in any way no matter what I feed it! Fun to shoot and accurate as heck. What more could you want.

I think Glocks reliability rep is a bit overblown. My friends G22 was shooting to the left last week because the rear sight started drifting. It was loose enough that you could move it with finger pressure. That has happened a few times during quals, once with mine. I replaced the factory sights on my G23 with Mepros that were properly installed and that fixed that (not a bad gun, very accurate for a Glock). I've seen a kaboom before, that was disconcerting. Some of Glocks QC problems are well documented but they never seem to hurt their PR very much. Not saying they are not good, just ease of the throttle a little Gockophiles. I have to give a +1 on the Rugers. I worked in firearms retail for a while and sold more P85s than anything else, I never got one back for service. I sold less S&Ws back then than anything else and got them back all the time, I hope they straightened that out. I like people to stay in the top shelf, Sig, HK, Glock, XDs, CZs,. All are reliable enough that you can then concentrate on getting the fit and features you want/need. That's what it's really all about. Personally I like my Kimber Custom Classic series 1 and my SA 1911 SS Loaded. Haven't had a hiccup from either and I bought them back in the late 90s.

My P95s have all been fantastic pistols, but of course there are many that are just as reliable, in general. If a person keeps the gun clean, doesn't abuse it, has good shooting technique and uses quality ammo, many handguns will shine for their owners.

I doubt that there are inherently unreliable pistols. I have used 2nd & 3rd generation S&W's, S&W M&P's, Glock's, S&W99/Walther P99 and several 1911's in 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ASCP. No difference in reliability.

My thoughts...

I don't know that you can call anyone pistol the most reliable.

If I had to pick a pistol solely on reliability, I'd choose one of the following:

Beretta 92 series with factory magazines

HK USP

Glock

M&P

XD (without semi wadcutters)

Sigs other than the p250s

I think that the first three are probably the most reliable, but I don't think that you'd really see a statistically signifiant difference between these guns.

I only have 2 semiautos with 0 malfunctions, S&W 6906 and a Ruger P85. Lots of rounds through both.

The most reliable autos in my mind are those of the top tier manufacturers like Glock and Sig that don't have a manual safety. Draw, aim, pull trigger, boom.

Glocks work for me, but that's not to say that Sigs, H&K's, XD's and a few others aren't good pistols. Find what works for you and stick with them. Bottom line, just keep on shooting !

I did the same with my G 23 and I did have problems. (3 out of 75) But that was also with FN rounds which could also have added to the issue. And I couldn't have fired any of my other pistols in the same manner with only 3 jams, I'm sure. I was also firing and pushing in mags as fast as possible.
