Last week my wife and I were on LI NY. Every year I try to make it back to NY for an annual party on the beach with old friends. I joked a few weeks ago in a thread how the NY trip was a trip where I never take a gun along.

So Saturday we get back from the beach party to our room (Red Roof Inn, Westbury LI NY) and as we go to our room there is this weird guy wandering the hallway. No problem we just head into our room. Then we hear this crashing and banging. Kathy looks out the peep hole and this lunatic is trying to bust down a room door across the hall. Hell, the walls were shaking. I got on the phone to the desk and told them, about then more calls were coming in. I suggested real strongly the call the cops and now!

The show continued. Finally a manager showed up and confronted the dude. The guy had more guts than I do. :) Then the manager left.

It took the Nassau County PD about twenty min to respond. Then a few cops showed up. Sitting in our room my only thoughts were if that lunatic bust in here wife is locked in bathroom and I had the butcher knife we used on the beach to slice and dice. Thinking how I longed for my .45 ACP. Damn, NYC born and raised and I hate this place now. I now know the gut feeling of being stripped of your rights. In New Jersey today visiting family and tomorrow back to Cleveland, Ohio. Home is sure going to look good. :)

The cops dragged the lunatic off. Finally!

Ya, there's nothing worse than having to disarm after you've been carrying for years and are so used to it. I disarmed once for an air show at an air force base and while the day was enjoyable it felt very strange, like being naked. Glad everything went OK for you though.

I feel your pain

I truly understand you problem AND the pain it causes.

I was born in NYC and lived there until I was 25,left there and moved to Western NYS.

When I went back to city to visit,I had a NYS CCW = but that did not allow me to carry in city [ really idiotic,as a NYC permit allows you to carry in the entire state ?. ]

I became an LEO and now was able to carry in all states AND -- NYC.

I strongly suggest that you carry a FIRE EXTINGUISHER in your baggage [ they make a smaller can ] and that you tell any who see it or ask about it "I fear fire".

That is one of THE best means to defend yourself,as it stop all oxygen from being used = cant breathe = cant attack anyone.

Just learn the laws as to use of force AND know that if that stuff comes back at you = your in deep kimchee.

I keep a few around at ALL times, they can actually fight a fire too !!.

There's a reason NYC was voted the most unhappy city in America recently. My wife understands we only go on vacation to places that honor my CCW from Indiana. Thats why we're headed back to the Smokie Mountains again this year.

For those that can't carry a firearm there are plenty of threads on alternative defensive solutions in the NonFirearms forum here.

Your options are pretty wide when driving, but narrow considerably when flying. None the less, there are better choices than others for either travel situation.

My Estwing camp axe is always in my breakdown bag in the car... and the bag comes with me into any hotel when i stay the night.
That and a few other things that are rather innocuous and have a utilitarian purpose that could double as good defensive tools. (3D cell maglight, length of chain, etc...)

I know how you feel about NYS restrictions. Born and raised there but will never go back, not even to visit. I was offered a well paying job in my field in NY that I turned down since the SAFE act made me a felon in my home state.

Luckily, Long Island is close enough to PA. Maybe start having your beach parties on the other side of the border?

The key thing missing from the OP is whether the lunatic was armed. That would make a world of difference. If he wasn't, I wouldn't be too worried. Most likely he had a spat with his girlfriend and was trying to break back into their room. (I'd call the police directly instead of going through the hotel front desk.)

So, no cruises, or travel to other countries like Canada or Europe? Sounds pretty sad to me.
There's more to life than worrying about whether you can carry a gun where you go

Does not make a lick of difference. Erratic behavior as described can be attributed to drug use. I have seen the damage one person can do to another when under the influence that would cause most people to go looking for the weapon used. If I were in a similar situation and legally armed, BG having a weapon or not would not make a difference in how jeopardized I would feel. Unfortunately until you do a tox screen or at the very least a field sobriety test, you cannot be certain who is high or not. So I consider everyone around me high. Not really but the point works.

You got it bro. I choose to not support those commie states that don't reconize the 2nd Ammedment. Cruises get you sick, other countries suck, and your sadness is not my problem. I'm happy with traveling in the south.

"Other countries suck". Nice to have an open mind. I guess not going anywhere you really wouldn't know, would you? If gun rights are your only criteria, I can tell you I've been in other countries that put our gun rights to shame.

Our image abroad is bad enough, maybe it's better you stay at home.

Funny, never got sick on the dozen cruises, nor in any of the dozens of countries I visited. Sad? Not hardly - I'm not the paranoid one here

I agree, please stay out of the South

Don't match my experience at all. What kind of fire extinguisher are you talking about? I don't think consumers can by Halon models.

My friends and I used to punk each other all the time with CO2 fire extinguishers, no way they would do anything but slow someone down enough to get a head start on running away (barely as the chase was on immediately afterwards!). Once my buddy used a dry chemical extinguisher on me mistaking it for a CO2 one, and after a face full of it I can tell you it didn't slow me down at all as I chased him down, did ruin my new shirt though :(

Maybe they are OK as a blunt instrument, but don't count on either of these two types of extinguishers to do much except maybe surprise the attacker that you are willing to fight back.

So you are stuck between Alexandria,Virginia, El Paso ,Texas and Key West ,Florida for the rest of your natural born life. :D

No Yellowstone, no Grand Canyon, no Yosemite, no 5th Avenue, no State Street, no Rome,Paris, London or Prague.

Oneounceload and Speedo66 have got it right. It's very sad . A lotta unneeded fear out there. NYC is the safest really big city in the United States.

See the FBI Stats.

What you gotta gun for?......

I've worked at few hotel & extended stay places doing security work.
I'm licensed to do both armed/unarmed security. I was employed for about a year two times at a chain hotel property; 2003-2004 & 2006-2007.
The second time I worked in the area, I wore my sidearm daily. At the time I owned a Ruger GPNY .38spl 4" barrel with Hogue Tamer grips. I used Speer Gold Dot 135gr +P JHPs & the Buffalo Bore 158gr lead SWC-HP +P for the .38spl revolver. I also packed a few Safariland speed-loaders or Bianchi Speedstrips.
We would sometimes get problems like the incident described. A few times I dealt with transients or street bums who'd sneak into a unsecured room acting as if they were registered hotel guests.
Drunks & domestics were common too. :uhoh:
I once had a young guy, strung out on drugs run into the hotel lobby rest-room, lock the door & barricade himself in. I contacted the local sheriff's office. After 35 minutes, the deputy(just 1) removed the subject(who was about 6'04" 20-25 years old) & took him to a ER.
Some guests would see my Ruger GPNY in my Bianchi UM84R holster or Blade-tech Kydex rig & say; "whatchu gotta gun for"?
Situations like I described is why I gotta gun. ;)

What countries put our gun rights to shame? As far as how other countries view us, I really don't care.

So you were aware of the situation, and the possibility of escalation (good SA)

You observed from behind your locked door, evaluated the situation, and remained behind your locked door (smart choice)

The door "under attack" did not yield. Your door never came under attack. Hotel Manager confronted the situation, maybe and maybe not smart for him, no impact on you.

Police took what seems like a long time to respond/resolve. A reality of modern life.

You were still in your room behind a (double locked?) door, probably one or two chairs available to use as defensive tools, your filet knife for last ditch, as well as fists and feet, and no assault on you would be surprise at this point, you were aware of a potential threat and could
respond very aggressively once YOUR safety was in question.

I always feel safer when I have pistol with me, I am sure you do as well.

Common sense and your awareness of the situation and your options were more important weapons than your .45 ACP.

The most powerful weapon is always the person, the gun is one of the tools.

Probably not a popular response on my part, I know, but ...

What countries put our gun rights to shame?

Syria? LOL!

I'm kind of curious about that myself.

That's a pretty broad statement, for sure...

Gah, perhaps a mod can close this thread before someone breaks a rib with the, "'MURICA! DERPITY DERP!" chest pounding.

Back to the original topic...

There's plenty of cool places and things to do that don't involve carrying a firearm and there's smart ways and dumb ways to experience them. Choose the smart ways and enjoy what's is out there.

breaks a rib with the, "'MURICA! DERPITY DERP!"
LOL, that's pretty funny!

It really is a matter of perspective. When you compare a super restrictive states like N.Y. or some others, to other countries that may be better, then a point for that can be made. You can't compare Britain to Alabama, because there's no contest, but, oh I dunno, New York to a 'not so bad' European country, then sure.

What countries put our gun rights to shame?
Czech Republic and Uruguay are supposed to be pretty good, as is Switzerland (not because of lack of laws, but because of social acceptance/enthusiasm for shooting sports). From what I gather from some of our members, a decent bit of stuff is available in South Africa, too. Obviously the best rights are retained by citizens, as with anything, and obtaining that is hard in most every nation. I do get the distinct impression that guns for lawful personal self-defense as a primary cause for ownership and enthusiasm is a distinctly American theme (admittedly a recent one). By which I mean that the nations that do have permissive firearms ownership/carry are still geared very much towards shooting sports in their attitudes (so there are still lots of arbitrary restrictions, bans, and licensing/registration requirements the population has been content to live with)

TCB

I also think that folks, when they make such a broad statement, may be referring to the second amendment in general. I think the U.S. Is the only country that has in its constitution, the right to keep and bear arms as a Basic human right. I believe only Mexico, and Switzerland come close to this, and they are pretty heavily regulated (ie, restrictions on 'military' calibers, and registration).

It is still pretty evident though, that even if it is in the constitution as a right, regulation can still get crazy, as in the case of N.Y. State...

Very good point. It's popular, but not a right, so they can be regulated into nothingness at the whim of the government, and the people have no constitutional recourse to fall back on.
