Good low cost ar bolt carrier group AR15

PSA has ptac,nickel borons for 99, reg for 79

Last I checked, AIM Surplus was selling some that I'd heard good stuff about, less than a hundred bucks, I believe.

The things to look for are:

-M16 carrier (pretty much all that's being sold these days)

-Magnetic particle inspected (MPI)

-High pressure tested (HPT)

The latter two don't really mean a ton in and of themselves, except that you can rest assured it's made from a good piece of (at least) the minimum acceptable steel. Accept notation of proper steel in place of HPT.

Nickel will run longer without needing lube.

PSA BCG is good stuff. I run them in three rifles, one in 5.56, and two in 6.8.
Nickel is nice, but if you clean/lube like I do, it doesn't matter. The do look good though!

I think BCM has a sale on their uppers with BCG included for something like $460.

RedX I got a BCG for my 6.8 for $125 earlier this year. $20 for a charging handle. They work well.

They claim it is easier to clean. I would agree that the caked on junk comes off easier but if you mine turned from a silver to a light rusted almost nasty eurine color after one use. It has been through a sonic cleaner several times and is stil lthat color. A few people have said you have to buff it to get it silver again...I'm not that interested.

HOWEVER they do say it needs little to no lubrication. I fired mine in a course about 700 times bone dry and had not one issue. But to be fair in all my AR's, I clean the BCG, drop a few drops of oil on them, spread it around with my finger and then use a rag to wipe it almost entirely off. I have never adhered to the soaking wet bolt theory the military shoves down your throat...and my AR's all run fine that way.

I shoot mine on a 10.5" suppressed SBR, so anything that helps keep off the gunk and crud is worth the extra few bucks.

Correction the Nickel Boron PSA'a are $119
PTAC's are $99. PTAC was recently acquired by PSA. To be quite frank, I have had about 50 PTAC LPK's, uppers, BCGs, etc and NEVER an issue. I was always suspicious and now am definitely am that PTAC was always PSA. I think it was a way for them to discount there items that had rough finish or cosmetic things. The PTAC uppers I bought always fuinctioned flawlessly but the finish on them was often times not the greatest.

For the price they are excellent. I would rather have a quality rifle with a minor cosmetic ding or smudge that I can build completely from scratch for $425 all to mil spec. Than pay a huge premium to get someone's logo tattooed on it.

AIM s was selling their own version of Nickel Boron but sold out . Looks like a good one. Then just a couple of days ago they had a sale on Ares Armor Nickel Boron for $80 shipped , an amazing price which sold out quickly,

Of course, the only part of the BCG that really sees carbon is the piston and cylinder. Piston is easy to clean on a wire wheel, and the bore of the carrier had better be chrome lined, regardless of exterior finish.

The soaking wet bolt application in the military is usually practiced in training, with blanks and an adapter, which geometrically increased the amount of trapped residue. Better to soak the trainees bolts and let them stay running than have a lot of downtime and complaints "My jammomatic quit!" Stoner didn't attempt to make them run with a .060" bore outlet and the cheapest pop powder that met training ammo specs.

Phosphate is the bare minimum to prevent the BCG from rusting when you are in a severe environment, shotgun it when you're back from a range, lube and wipe it down, it's good enough. Do that every time and no problems. Expensive coatings might pay their way if you took a carbine course every weekend, otherwise, most don't shoot over a 1k rounds a year and normal maintenance would be enough.

What the coated bolt sellers are doing it simply pushing the old "M16's are dirty" myth and trying to play your fears off by getting you to spend money. M16's with issue bolts have been doing well, for decades, in wars, and in storage, there's little point doing more unless you want to dress it up. The coated bolts are on the market because they sell, not because there has been a huge drama over not having it. Just like charging handles - it's really not a big deal.

Shop for milspecs with MPI and testing, you get your money's worth, but if you want a low price, the coatings rarely make the cut. And you don't really need them.

Don't cheap out on a BCG. This is the heart of the gun. A BCG along with the barrel are the two places it really doesn't pay to cheap out.

Get a BCM and know that you have something you can count on and be done with it.

Borodin speaks wit straight tongue.....the BCG is not a place to "go cheap" of course I go further and use all quality parts in my builds, it just makes sense if you intend to shoot it a lot.

Best deal I've seen on hpt/mpi bcg's in phosphate is $75, add 25 NB. AR part prices are falling fast.

I got an email from one of the gun and ammo suppliers recently with $79 nickel boron BCG's. That's the best price I've seen on them.
