    22 Long Rifle vs 375 H&H Magnum

That's funny right there. If I were to ask my Dad, he would probably say 375 H&H for some reason. It was his elk to varmint gun. Good with it too, even with the old metal butt plate. Me? I'd pick neither for this application.

    Kimber Ultra CDP

Thank You for your help folks. I will check out the Springfields and Colts as well. I know they are very reputable products. Walkalong, very nice pistols. Thanks.

    Kimber Ultra CDP

I'm a simple guy. I like bolt rifles, revolvers and punp shotguns and have never had an interest in auto loader handguns. Until now. Saw one at the gun store the other day and it has my attention. 45ACP and beautiful. Also more $ than I should consider. About $1100. Anyway, what...

    Marlin 336BL

It is a handy rifle because of it's size and shoots just fine. I like the shorter over all length and think the big loop is a plus especially if you are wearing gloves or have large hands. The laminate stock is considered all weather too. If the price is right, I would go for it.

    Campfires when tent hunting?

True believer that a camp fire has nothing to do with successful rifle hunting. I actually think it is part of the hunting experience. There is nothing better than sitting around it and solving the world's problems with the rest of the hunting party or getting lost in your own solitude...

    Winchester Model 70 Safari Express .375 H&H w/ Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x?

My problem is I can't keep the drool from flooding the keyboard. It's a great rifle and IMO the ultimate elk round. Good for many other things also.

What is your most memorable shot?

I know most great shots stories are about big game but my most memorable shot was on a teal, wing set, screaming about a 1000000 mph perpendicular to the blind. Maybe 30'-40' away. Being too young to know better, I dusted that poor foul with a 12ga and the retriever had little to retrieve...

Biggest caliber you would use on whitetail?

I think you should use as big as you like. It's not as if the bullets explode on impact because they are "bigger". I have almost exclusively used 30 '06 for all larger game but my Dad used nothing smaller than 375 H&H (his varmint rifle at times). He just loved the cartridge and could shoot...

    Best rifle brand?

I like the X Bolt. Have been a M70 and M77 guy my whole life but think the X Bolt will be the next one.

    Starter rifle

Since her budget allows, I think the CZ Youth rim fire would be a good choice unless the 14 year old doesn't need the smaller rifle. It is single shot, adaptable to clip feed I think, so it could work for beginner or someone who matures to a more experienced shooter. Bolt action. I'm told...

    Redfield aperture sight

I have that exact sight on a pre-war M70. I know what you mean about it almost qualifies as a ghost ring sight. That's what most people say when they look through mine, but that's the way I use it. No disc and it works pretty well. Seems in those days that it was a fairly common sight...

    coyote choices?

Your 243 and 12 gauge with some sort of buck shot are the best choices from your arsenal.

How do you ready your rifle for deer season??

I don't do a lot of range time. Though I enjoy it (somewhat), once things are proved, I'm done. I initially got my rifle to shoot 3" high at 100 yards. If it shoots like that at paper before each season after five or six rounds, that's good for me. I'll kill from 10 to 300 yards easily...

    Splitting Elk hairs

I would go with the 225. It's not too much and neither is your choice of weapons. I'm an '06 180 grain guy but your choice is a great one.

    What is your favorite Magnum?

I voted 45 family. Specifically some sort of Performance Center S&W 460 Magnum. This seems like the most versitile magnum handgun to me. I don't like recreational shooting with the 460 or even 454 loads but for those several times a year when I wanted to pack those loads it would be nice...
