The Colt 'New Service' appreciation Thread

I have a New Service from 1919, in 45 Colt. They are quite the double action revolver. This one was originally sent to the Royal Northwest Mounted Police. Rod :)

What's it like to shoot a 45 Long Colt?

I usually don't pay much attention to recoil, usually taking notice of where the holes are. A good quality revolver with stocks that fit your hands shouldn't bother you much with recoil. I routinely shoot, 357, 44 magnum with Model 27's and Model 29's and can shoot them N-frames all day long...

    S&W Model 19-2 vs. 686-2 (4" bbl)?

My choice would be the M19-2 if it checks out. What beats up the M19 is not so much the 357 ammo but the type of 357 ammo. The 125 gr, 357 magnum is not recommended for the M19 because the bullet is too short and by the time it hits the rifling the bullet is not sealing the barrel to cyl. gap...

    S&W Pre Model 18, Model 18-3

$700 may be too high in one respect, but if you're picky about condition, $700 is okay. The feeling of paying a tad too much will wear off quicker than the satisfaction of owning a NIB M18-3. My way of thinking is a $450 M18-3, with wear and tear and no box is not as good a bargain as a $700...

    SW m29

Here's a picture of a Model 29. It's an early 29-2 with a 6 1/2" barrel. The dash two stands for Model 29, second change. This one is a "Dirty Harry Special". It's a sweetheart to shoot and very light pull on D/A. Rod Model 29-2

    Internal lock?

harmonic: I think you're correct on the red ramp site. I've understood that if you can see the pin that holds it on, that's a sign it's been changed. The picture below clearly shows a pin. The M28 no dash is the one at the top. Its a very early M28 no dash and it has a ramp site, but not a red...

    Internal lock?

I'm not concerned over the internal locks as all mine are P/R older models. I'm not in the market for one of the new ones if there's still older ones for sale. Here's my latest discovery . . M27 no dash (1959) Rod

If you could only have one Revolver...

Only One? . . :uhoh: . That would be a tough call between a S&W Registered Magnum and a Colt SAA 1st Gen. early smokeless. . both in excellent condition of course. . I'd buy the Registered magnum first and then the Colt SAA. . . or maybe the other way around? .:) Rod
