I bought an Eotech XPS2 sight for my Bushmaster AR Carbine yesterday and went out to the range to sight it in. I was very impressed with the performance of it but have observed a wide range of mounting positions (pertaining to fore and aft on the rail) people put it. I mounted mine as far back as I could but see a lot of people mounting them mid bolt or even forward of the receiver like a scout scope. The Eotech website does not give much information as to any recommendation other than if you are mounting a night vision of magnification device behind it. Any advice from those of you with experience?

My rule of thumb is: If I shoot both eyes open, I mount it forward. If I shoot one eye closed, I mount it rearward. A lot of folks mount it forward for both eye's open shooting because it doesnt take up as much of your field of view.

Put the EOTech in different locations and see what you think. If you have rail space in front of the receiver you have plenty of trial and error room.

Since I have a standard handguard, I put my long base EOTech right in front of the rear sight. It works just fine, both eyes open or not.

While there's no arguing with what works for you, I think conventional wisdom is / was(?) if you're going to mount it forward, don't leave the receiver.

The thinking is once you make the jump forward of the receiver, accuracy can be affected by flex / movement forward of the receiver.

Sounds good to me - I have all of mine (even with magnifiers) mounted on the receiver.

It doesn't matter, just keep it on the upper receiver not the rail. I run my Aimpoint micro to the rear just in front of my rear iron sight, but it has a much smaller objective lens.

For a 1x optic, forward vs aft is basically a tradeoff between field of view through the optic vs. amount of the world that is obscured by the body of the optic. Further back, you see more through the window; further forward, you see more of the world around the optic. As others have mentioned, try it in different positions in a variety of shooting positions and see what works for you.

I mounted my EOTech far enough forward to clear the folding rear sight

There is no advantage to mounting an EOTech further back as it doesn't affect your sight radius. The balance of the gun should be a larger concern. Mounting it at the rear of the upper rail compromises mounting back up sights

If you want to use it for longer distance shooting, the further the dot is from your eye, the better. You get an improved sight radius that way. However as noted, most folks don't mount that far forward unless operating the sight with other accessories (at least occasionally) such as magnifiers or NV gear.

I mount Eotechs the farthest from my eye on the receiver as they can go. Never beyond the receiver ( never on the forend)
