Back in February I was asked a question on the thread entitled Grease Cookie regarding my use of sticky back felt buttons as wads.

So today, I made some smoke test firing a project piece and managed to recover one wad and ball from the dirt.

The ball's kinda chewed up having shaved past a rock, but otherwise fairly intact. The felt showed no signs at all of having melted and despite the dirt remained fairly fuzzy.

Hope that answers the question.

Do you know the felts fiber composition.

Fabric store/hobby shop felt seems to be polyester. 100% wool felt on line seems to be, what with shipping going through the roof, a bit pricy.

Ummmm........... let me burn one here real quick.

OK, it melted in the lighter flame but didn't actually catch fire and burn. Don't recognize the smell (doesn't smell like wool or polyester). Maybe some kinda nylon?

Huh. Just went & found an intact package by the same company (Shepherd Hardware Products). Says made from recycled fibers, but doesn't specify what kind. Maybe recycled pop bottles (polypropylene/polyethylene) ??

Asked and answered ;)

So something I'm not wanting to put through my revolvers.

Guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and buy a yard of Durofelt. At my age a yard will last a life time.

What is really bad is "those new fangled plastic shotgun wads'. but brake cleaner gets it loose.
I have been using fake felt wads for some time and they don't leave any residue that I see, unlike shot gun wads that are sliding against the barrel.
I shoot often but only a couple 3 cylinders at a time then clean. The wads I have picked off the ground don't look any more melted than the real felt or the Wonder Wads I have looked at.
