I've been dabbling with 1858 remingtons for a bit, today I read an article about loading powder, wad, grease and then ball so I gave it a shot.

First 6 shots were fine. Next cylinder not so good. I don't know if I used too much or seated the ball too deep or if it was just heat.

Shot 1....Boom
shot 2.....pop
shot 3.....pop
shot 4.....pop.....ball left chamber and barrel but I doubt it got far thought it was just a cap like prior 2
shot 5.....pop.....same as shot 4
shot 6.....pop

In any case I don't think i'll try this method again.

Luckily the nipples were easy to remove and it was simple to tap out the loads.

I was very impressed with the accuracy and ease of cleaning on my new stainless 1858 target model. My son is trying to steal my sherriff model. lol He has a navy and loves my sherriff.

you could not tell if the grease melted in and spoiled the powder?

I could tell that the grease had melted into the powder, that was very obvious. But i'm not sure what caused it.

As far as a link, I can't provide one but found several write ups about the benefits when I happened to be googling.

They stated better lube because grease on top mostly blew away. So I thought i'd try it.

when you seated the ball the lube was forced past the wad into the powder. i use wonder wads with out any lube and have had no problems with proper ignition. eastbank.

I had the same results as the op. I use a grease pill, 50/50 bees wax Crisco punched out with a 45 case. Powder wad ball grease pill, good clean bore. Powder wad grease pill ball erratic ignition. Oddly with the poor ignition there was also more flash around the cap.

for longer term loads i use powder, wax paper wad, dry lube fiber wad, ball, grease pill over ball. goes bang after sitting 4 or 5 weeks.

I use powder wad of 50/50 deer fat/ bees wax for shooting, for storing, I place a card wad under the lube wad, have stored for 3 months that way and all went boom.

Sam'l Colt did not recommend any wads or lubes in loading his pistols. A proper fitting ball over an appropriate amount of powder. A lube pill is not necessary under any circumstances in a percussion pistol.
I use a wad because I do not wish to take the time in a match to be absolutely sure about the placement of the ball in the chamber to avoid low spots that can cause multiple chamber ignition.

I am aware of that. The loading and firing are the same except the Remington requires the face of the cylinder to be wiped between shots instead of being gooped up with lube.

What I assume happened was that it's 100 degrees outside, I used bore butter which is kinda thin. I probably used a little much and most likely seated the ball too deep which pushed some lube under the wad and wet the powder when the previous shot heated it up.

I realize that neither a wad nor grease is absolutely necessary, but I have both so i'll use them. I've shot without wad or grease with no ill effects. That's how my son loads them with no problems.

I think i'll continue to use a wad and grease last like I normally do, never had a failure that way. I really don't have a rough clean-up or performance issues as-is so i'll stick with what works. Although i'm sure i'll experiment a little here and there. lol

P.S. I'm pretty sure thicker grease would have given better results........but it's too finicky to play with unless your bored. :)
