Springfield XD-E

Friggin figures, just bought a P938 and told about a million counter clerks "what I really want is a DA/SA single stack..."

Maybe next year when they do the mag promo again.

I was quite interested to see what they came up with; I like my XDS and would totally have been down with a DA/SA version of it.

And then the day before it's announced, Springfield decided to stab me, all of the other IL gun owners, and all of the non-"big box" IL dealers in the back.

No thank you.

Just for kicks, let's look at how it specs out against what I believe to be its closest competitor, the Sig P239 according to Springfield's and Sig's websites.

Springfield XD-E
Length 6.75"
Height 5.0" (With Flush Magazine)
Width 1.00" (Grip Width Per Spec Sheet)
Barrel 3.3"
Weight 25oz

Sig P239
Length 6.6"
Height 5.1" (With Standard Magazine)
Width 1.2"
Barrel 3.6"
Weight 29.5oz

I currently carry a Sig 239 and have been seriously contemplating the Sig 225 A-1. I also have and have carried a Springfield XDm 3.8 Compact. All 3 of those pistols are reasonably similar in overall size. I will have to see the XD-E in person before I pass further judgment. Although I will say I am not a fan of the fiber optic sights on anything. If I bought the XD-E I would opt for XS Big Dot sights.

I had a P239 in 357 Sig and it was my favorite carry gun, but 357 seemed hard to find, always expensive so I traded it in for something else. Have been wanting a small single stack DA/SA gun that wasn't a 3913 or other variation. I really hope this thing fits my hand nicely as I've been carrying a CZ PCR all winter and want a smaller gun for summer. I don't mind the fiber optic sights, but I think I'd rather have a stainless slide. :)

The only ones I've seen so far are first editions that ship in a toolbox with a stupid hammer that says "Springfield Armory" on it. There's probably plenty of proof out there already, but SA marketing folks must be a bunch of tools.

A solution in search of a problem.

Yeah, I fail to see what the problem is as DA/SA guns have been around for quite a while.

Another anti-climatic introduction to a new gun from Springfield. This and the whole sb-1657 bill has me so over Springfield Armory right now. After I shoot a xde that can change my opinion on that particular gun though.

I'm really curious, in all of these articles, the author cites the "people" who are clamoring for DA/SA guns. Who are the "people," exactly?

Maybe, but some of the models they selected for SAINT teasers were *hawt*.

Yeah, but the connection there is just about as good as the connection between Kate Upton and Hardee's...

Skinny but not a lightweight.

That was the case with the XDs, too.

What's a P239 cost these days? XD-E street will prolly be around 450...and Sig doesn't usually offer to "gear up" deal.

BUT..SA. Maybe this will inspire Walther to put out a PPH with PPS M2 texture, paddle release and a hammer.

My response:
That would be people like me who do not think that Striker fired pistols are the neatest thing since sliced bread. People who want that first trigger pull to be long and deliberate for a variety of reasons with safety being very high on that list of reasons. With reference to the single stack feature, people who don't think they are likely to run into a pack of urban yutes (my cousin Vinnie reference) carrying Glock 18s with snail magazines loaded with depleted uranium rounds (Skyfall reference) and need to carry 82 rounds (15+1 plus two 33 round stick mags) on their person to shoot it out with those yutes. People who are currently carrying larger, heavier DA/SA options who would consider something a little smaller and a little lighter if it came in a DA/SA hammer fired platform. People who like their pistol to have re-strike capability and incorporate that into their training. People who like to place their thumb on the exposed hammer and feel for any movement as they holster (or re-holster) their pistols, sometimes in an outside the waistband holster carried at 3:30 position (blind) while seated in a vehicle to avoid scrutiny of passersby. Someone who understands their pistol has two distinctly different trigger pulls and practices enough to be proficient with that setup. These people can also walk and chew gun at the same time. Or maybe it's that old school shooter who is really used to revolvers but occasionally carries a semi-auto and wants a similar trigger experience. Or maybe it's the person who walks their own path rather than following the crowd.

I think I have covered a large swath of the gun toting public.

Not sure what happened on the above post. Somehow the original quote and my response became entangled and I couldn't separate them. My bad.

Has anyone ever tried to figure out how many of these people there are? Because from the copy you read in the reviews, it seems like there isn't anything that the "people" aren't waiting for.

I'd be down for a pps with a hammer over an xds with a hammer any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The P938 sells somewhat okay, so that's the market. In addition, look how _every_ maker of 1911 rushed a 9mm version in the recent months. Hopefully, SA and others have a network of captive LGS that report sales to them. Sadly, that data is obviously private.

I feel fairly certain that Springfield (and any other manufacturer for that matter) performs market research before releasing any new product. I'm sure if you contacted their marketing department they would share some of that with you. But all one has to do is search a few threads right here on DA/SA and you will see lots of fans of that configuration.

Less than the majority (as proven by Glock and S&W), more than zero (as proven by Sig). Which is why it's good that guns like this are offered. Nobody says it should be the only gun on the market, but serving minority segments of the market is a good thing.

I want this gun, though I'd want it more if it didn't say "GRIP ZONE" on the grip.
