will any cheap riser be precise enough to work with an AR10? I have a real nice vortex scope (30mm tube) so I need to use a riser. Will it be good or do I need some sort of special one?

I run 1/2" risers and Medium rings on all of my AR's. It works for me!

I can't stand to use the scope mounts like the PEPR style units,They raise the scope too high off the receiver for me.

Im the exact opposite. I dislike adding a second piece to the equation, and tend to run AR specific mounts, over VERY tall pic or weaver rings.
Ive used risers a few times and they do work, but alignment can be an issue with the cheap ones.

That’s my hang up. $100 vortex rings and a $600 scope. Putting them on a $25 riser seems foolish.

AR specific mounts like the PEPR fit most people better than your setup Txhillbilly. You are definitely the exception to the rule.

Nikon sells a two piece AR mount SamT1 that I mounted for a bunch of customers. There are people who don’t like them but I’ve never had one brought back to because they failed. They run under $50.00 and that is the least expensive option I’d go with. I believe the PEPR is a much better option though. SWFA sells the PEPR under their name with a little different twist. Instead of selling 1” and 30mm they just sell a 30mm that comes with inserts in case you have a 1” tube scope. Additionally, instead of two sets of upper rings(smooth and picatinny) you only get a set of smooth upper rings. They cost quite a bit less than a PEPR.

Sweet thanks. I have Nikon mounts on other Ar rifles I guess I didn’t realize they made a 30mm.

Nikon makes a scope, the P-223 3x32. There are VERY few AR mounts that will work with it and the store I worked at carried the P-Series Two Piece Mount just so we could mount the 3x32 on customer’s AR’s. And we did sell a fair number of those scopes, man are they seriously stubby. That’s why I’m so familiar with the mounts.

What I don’t like about the mounts is how you install them and the fact that the mount has two different size Allen head screws, Allen wrenches come with the mount but if you use a torque screwdriver you’ll have to keep track of two bits. I don’t remember what size they are but one of them is a pretty odd one. The mount does work though.

For an inexpensive mount I’d much rather have the S.A.L.T. from SWFA.

If it's a long scope which most are, you might consider mounting it to a cantilever.

I tried a couple AR one piece scope mounts years ago on my RRA 223 and 458 SC. The cheek weld was terrible because the scopes sat too high off the upper receiver's.
I run an ACE skeleton stock on all of my AR's,and using a Weaver 1/2" riser with medium Burris Signature Zee rings has worked perfect for me. I'm running this setup on 5 AR's small and large frame guns.

Yeah I use one particular that I can vouch for on ARs with a 20 moa cant.

Have three of them, never had a problem with the torque screws. I use blue loctite to in the screws like a scope to keep vibration and weather changes from loosening the screws up but properly torqued should be sufficient
I have 2-3 UTG risers (short in length and height). Excellent products. One is a QD and does just fine.

So a 20mm would put my elevation turret back down instead of about dead center.

20 moa just tilts it down to give you more elevation. You would have to rezero again, which you would proably need to do just moving your scope off your rifle anyways.
However it’s really dependent on how you shoot, It’s the same concept as a Remington 700 scope base with 20 moa built into it.
If you don’t shoot at distances that that matters then a pepr or swfa SALT mount would work fine.

You probably like your scopes much lower than I do. The lowest rings I could make work as weaver quadlock see thru. Those are about an inch off receiver. Using a riser and regular rings to get your height right was probably a very good solution.

This ADM Recon was perfect with my Vortex PST and the Vortex mount does very well with the Vortex Crossfire II. Very comfortable and natural fit.
