If you could only have one hunting rifle what would it be ???

Must be a 30-06!

I suppose I could get by with a Douglas barreled, pre-64 Win model 70. (I just re-read, "one shot, one kill", so that one's been on my mind)

But here in reality, I can do everything I need to with my Remington 760.

I would get a Ruger Gunsite Scout if I were choosing a production gun. Otherwise, I would get a scout rifle made by Brockman or similar.

A 22 lr. Round nose will penetrate more than most people realize at 50 yds. Well placed shot will bring down large hogs .

Sure it will if you hit them in exactly the right place and if you can get them to pose for you so you can hit them in exactly the right place. But the problem comes when we try to get within 50 yards of a live wild hog, get him to hold still, get him to pose exactly right, then be steady enough to slip that bullet into that tiny little unforgiving spot you’ve got to hit him to make a clean kill with a .22LR on a large, wild, hog in field conditions.

It’s much easier to talk about than to actually do, which is why you don’t see anybody hunting wild hogs with a .22LR for the most part. If you were to actually try it you’d get pretty frustrated pretty quick.

This is too easy. You left a legal loophole. The firearm part of a firearm is the serialized receiver. The balance are merely parts. Therefore, I would purchase an Encore “receiver only”.

Before I exited, I would wander over to pick up barrels chambered in 12 gauge smoothbore, a 20 gauge rifled, a 50X209 muzzleloader, a 30-06 Spg, a .243 Win, a .22-250 Rem and .22LR.

Legally, I would have purchased and own a single firearm. Thank-you, T/C Arms!

Out of the guns I currently have it would be my Ruger GSR 18" stainless in .308. For small game I would resize and load a 00 buck pellet, like shown in this video. The GSR box mag would allow for a magazine full of full power .308 and a separate magazine of small game loads. Similar idea to @Laphroaig

That's a big attraction to me, too, why I own an old Contender. .30-30, 7mmTCU (for IHMSA), .22LR, and .410/.45 Colt I bought it years ago before the Encore came out. If I were wanting it in a rifle now days and was restricted to one frame, the Encore is available even in belted magnums, what the old Contender could never handle pressure wise. Before the Encore, there were cottage industries in wildcat cartridges for the Contender, JD Jones's stuff for the most part.

The Encore can be had in .375 H&H, even .458 Win Mag. My Encore pistol in .270 Win was a beast, but very accurate. Last week I was reviewing Encore barrels in 6X45, .300 Blackout and 7.62X39. Very interesting offers.

My .270 Winchester in a older Weatherby Vanguard deluxe. She is accurate enough for varmints at distance and has killed any big game animal I have run up against in the lower 48. I can' think what could survive a 140 gr ttsx or my go to 130 sierra gk's. Not to mention the little 100 gr varmint plinkers are hell on squirrels and ground hogs.

I think a 22 lr with a well placed shot would take any game in the north America.
Not legally, for large game, unless you are Inuit and shooting caribou from a boat by grabbing the antlers and putting one in the ear, the only method I know of that is legal (or at least was at one point) in the US. Generally, we refrain from condoning illegal activities here on THR.

I'm a newbie here, but I gotta say a well made .30-06 with a well made scope. Oh, and then I'll need a well made press with appropriate accessories.

A S&W 28, and a Glock 23 with several magazines ought to round things out nicely.

My Sako A7 30-06. Right around 7.75# with the Leupold 3-9X40, light enough to carry all day and heavy enough to be really comfortable slinging 180 grainers. Shown here chasing mule deer at around 10,000’ last October (deer track in the snow right next to the buttstock) covered a lot of miles and vertical that day.
