If you could only have one .22 for hunting...

It was my 10/22 Target but.... after putting togather a 10/22 magnum...
Which is much more accurate, I am hooked on .22 mag !

In .22lr it would have to be my CZ Trainer/special. That is if it could only be a .22lr.

For survival I think a .22lr and shotgun combo would be ideal.

Thanks for the replies.

For those of you who went with a CZ 452, what do you like about them?

Oh thanks a lot! You take my favorite caliber of all time, and my favorite firearms and force me to select one. <<Kicks stones>>. Okay, after much reflection, I would say the Marlin 39A Golden. A second choice goes to the Savage Mark II. Third choice goes to the Henry Golden Boy lever action. Fourth place goes to the Marlin 981-T. Fifth place to the T/C R55 Classic or the T/C Contender. Sixth place goes to the Kimber Gov't model 82. Yes, it's heavy, but it's also dead-on accurate to 100 yards...easily.

Paaaaallllleeeeease. You expect me, to choose 1, single, solitary .22LR. I laugh.

Doc,

Nice List. I have the Marlin 981t and it's a great rifle. I'd remove the Henry and add the Ruger 10/22. My .22 collection has the 10/22, Marlin 981t and after the first of the year your #1 pick the Marlin 39a Golden.

If I had to pick any ONE It would be the 39a. of the ones I currently hav the 981t.

I guess I could hunt with my Ruger MkIII Hunter.

The 10/22 has the semi auto feature that is nice but the 77/22 shoots better.

You asked why the CZ 452. It is just very accurate. I have only taken it hunting once but I have not missed with it yet. It is also fun to shoot. It is a great looking rifle. For a rifle that costs about $300 or so to shoot this good...1/2 inch groups or less at 50 yards. That would take any type of small game I would hunt. Not only that but it is accurate enough for head shots on rabbits and squirrels so you would not be messing up any meat.

cz 452 super brno saa 2500, brooks trigger job, nikon 3-9x40. its why lifesavers have holes in them.

henry goldenboy is second only cause mounting a scope on it would be an abomination. so it is [my eyes] limited to 50 yards

My Remington M512X Sportsman .22 bolt gun. It'll put 5 rounds into an inch at 100 yards on a calm day. I've been killin' squirrels and pop cans with this thing for 47 years since I got it for my 9th birthday, so I reckon I could say it's reliable. God only knows how much game that gun has taken.

Second would be my Remington 597 Magnum, just as accurate as the 512, but ammo is a might more expensive. I could brain shoot a deer on any day at 100 yards with that one without sight adjustment. And, yes, it's 100 percent reliable with CCI maximag. I'd first go with the 512, though, ol' faithful and in situations where money's tight, .22LR is cheap and available about everywhere.

Remington Fieldmaster Model 572 pump

Wife bought it for me in 1976 shoots very well and has never let me down. It’s a keeper.

Back some 60+ years ago, I had a Marlin bolt-action, tube mag. I pretty much hit whatever I shot at. Then, a few years later, I got a Remington 550. Same thing. Lots of shooting, never a problem. Those were the days when I could do quite well with iron sights.

I now have a Walther Model 2 that I inherited. Semi-auto, with a singular feature: Rotate the bolt down about fifteen degrees and it's locked into single-shot mode. Accurate? You'll get bored and quit before shooting outside a quarter at 40 yards.

I had a 10/22 for a few years; K4 scope on it. Once I discovered QuikShok ammo, I got excellent tight-group accuracy.

A 10/22 with suppressor and lots of mags.

If it's anything like my 10/22, you'll need three mags before you hit anything with it.

Awe, it ain't THAT bad. 1.5" 50 yard groups is okay for squirrel hunting, but my Remington will shoot his eye out at that range. I like the little 10/22 as a plinker, but I have more accurate rifles. In fact, I have more accurate pistols! LOL!

Remington 581 for me. It has 5 and 10 round magazines. They shoot as good as rifles costing four figures. They are also light enough to carry all day.

M'bogo

Ditto.

I don't know which single .22 I'd want. Too hard to decide, and most are inexpensive enough to make the decision even harder.

But it wouldn't be a 10/22.

Haha. I own a 10/22. It was the first real firearm I learned to shoot. Tons of people own them, and almost everybody who has one loves it... until he shoots a better .22 that costs the same or less than a Ruger.

It's not that we stop loving our 10/22s. We just like shooting smaller groups (or shooting more squirrels).

My first .22 was a Mossberg semiauto with a butt tube feed. It didn't eagerly feed every kind of ammo, but it sure was accurate. Actually, it still is; I just haven't had it out in a while.

When I got a 10/22, I expected similar accuracy, since everyone seems to like the things. I was quite disappointed...

As far as the one hunting .22, I'd say, if it's an inexpensive semiauto, I'd have a Marlin 60.

For more money, a Marlin 39. Can't decide on a Mountie or a 24" HB 39A.

In a boltie, there are too many options. CZ's are really nice, and for the price, doubly so. But if we're talking dream guns, budget be damned, well, it's hard to decide!

I have an old M152 Mossberg removable magazine fed with the flip down forward grip. It's old enough that the forward grip is wood, not the plastic they later used. It came with a receiver aperture that broke off about 20 years ago. Step dad gave it to me when I was 14. I still have it, with a scope on it, and it still shoots good, but I hardly ever pick it up anymore.
