As stated in my previous post I went ahead and bought a Daniel Defense
DDM4-V5, not my 1st AR as I have a Bushmaster V match with a 24" barrel and a Leupold 4 X 14 scope mounted on it. Guns a real tack driver but weighs in at over 10lbs. with the scope. Great for long range shooting at the outdoor range. Anyway I wanted something more compact with the shorter barrel and a 1 in 7 twist.

Now that I popped for it it's already tugging at my wallet for add on's. eek.gif
Would like to get a variable red dot 1 x 4 scope or a standard 1x sight.
Need recommendations on ammo for target shooting.

Also happened on an article about the 6.5 Grendal which I found interesting so I need recommendations on where to get an upper assembly for that caliber, Daniel Defense doesn't make one.

Don't know why I did this, guess I'm going to have to postpone retirement for another year. frown.gif

Welcome to the cult.... I mean club
Our pusher, I mean esteemed leader will be joining shortly and posting a pic of what happens if you don’t get help ASAP

Seriously, as you’re learning the choices are almost limitless.

As for ammo, how much are you shooting, how much do you expect to shoot and are you willing to invest the time and money on Reloading?

I ask as Reloading isn’t that expensive to get into if you shop wisely and you can save a ton over match grade ammo. Plus you’ll learn an awlful lot about your ballistics and shooting.

You’ll be able to make custom loads for your guns and needs and get the level of accuracy you’re willing to work for.

Plus given the traction the anti gun nuts are getting it’s a way to prepare for possible ammo shortages in the future.

So I’d say save your brass, and think about Reloading if you haven’t done some already.

I couldn't agree more for 6.5 Grendel, reloading will pay for itself. OR you get to shoot a lot more. Either way you look at it, a win win.

Fellow on another forum mentioned some 77gr. Hornady match bullets $18 bucks for a box of twenty. Been reloading on a single stage press for 40 years. Darn it now I gotta learn about 5.56 too. Part of my interest in AR's is the cheap ammo factor kinda like 9mm punybellum.
Invest most of my reloading time on calibers that mean something like 30/06, 45/70, 44mag, 38 Super, 45 Colt, 10mm and of course .45ACP.
I cringe at the thought of several hours of reloading time getting shoved into one 30 round magazine.:barf:

You realize, you now need an AR15 pistol. They are so light and handy.

No interest in a AR pistol, although the Kriss Vector in 10mm has sparked some interest, already setup for re-loading.
Fortunately the guns & ammo budget is now exhausted for 2019.:what:

Here’s my answer to the lighter and more compact question:

I built this one, and it weighs in at a very light 4lbs 8oz with the optic and shoots great. I made this one for my wife because she hates the weight of rifles when shooting off-hand. I'm still thinking of going crazy to shave some more weight, but it gets expensive for minimal gains beyond this point. But, I've already mapped out a path to getting it below 4 pounds if I want to (while not going into SBR or pistol territory).

Not really, got enough reloading supplies to last 5 years and I always have a couple pennies for dies, powder, bullets and primers.
Have a lot of .223 ammo on hand, by the time I shoot it off and save the brass 2020 will be here.
In the mean time some of the budget is still on hand for scopes, sights and other toys to hang on my new carbine.;)
By the way Coloradokevin that's one really cool rifle you built, as someone getting up in years a 4.8lb. rifle is very appealing.

Spend that money on ammo instead. Nothing worse than having a new AR and a spare upper sitting in the safe doing nothing because there's no ammo.

Get ammo. Get mags. Go shoot and have fun. Don't start thinking about a new upper until you're standing ankle deep in empties.

I got my first lower recently unfortunately my gun money keeps getting spent on things like utilities groceries and helping kids and grandkids.

Oh well the rest my Ar will come together soon.

I got a 50 Beowulf upper from Alexander Arms. Both it and the grendel are AA calibers. My 50 performs very well, just pulled out of the box and pinned on.

I built my grendel upper from parts available from midway 10 years ago. The barrel is actually a stoner model in .264 LBC

I reload for prairie dog hunts. My Dillon 550 can pretty easily crank out 500 rounds per hour of match grade ammo

A couple easy evenings can result in 2k or more rounds. Nice thing is that boutique calibers like 6.5 or my 7 Mag can be loaded for about what common low end factory stuff is in .223

I've thought about a progressive press but I'm way to anal when it comes to reloading. After tumbling I like to size and decap, inspect the brass, clean the primer pocket and then prime the cases using an RCBS hand priming tool,
That's my system and I been doing it to long to change now. :p
