Here’s the reply I received from McConnell:
Thank you for contacting me. Our country is mourning the senseless acts of violence in El Paso and Dayton. My prayers remain with the victims of this terrible violence, their families and friends, and the brave first responders who charged into harm’s way.
Following these horrific shootings, President Trump called on Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to help prevent future acts of violence. I have asked several Senate Committees to work on bipartisan solutions to help protect our communities and preserve our constitutional rights. It was serious, bipartisan work that led to last year’s successful passage of the Fix NICS Act and the STOP School Violence Act.
The Fix NICS Act requires the records of people prohibited from owning a gun to be entered into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to make sure the system is more accurate, while also protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. This legislation also allows people whose names are incorrectly in the database to appeal to get their names out of the system. The STOP School Violence Act provides federal funding for school safety programs and evidence-based technology and equipment to improve school security to help prevent school violence. Only through serious, bipartisan, bicameral efforts will we be able to continue this important work and produce further legislation that can pass the Senate, pass the House, and earn the President’s signature. Partisan theatrics and campaign-trail rhetoric will only take us farther away from the progress Kentuckians and all Americans deserve.
I remain fully committed to working with my colleagues in the U.S. Senate to continue to put forth policies that will help make our communities safer and protect our constitutional rights. I will be sure to keep your thoughts and concerns in mind throughout that process.
Sincerely,
MITCH McCONNELL
UNITED STATES SENATOR
It’s even more generic than I expected, and I’m an actual constituent.
