Need to buy another wheel gun just because. I am looking at the Uberti Cattleman in brass. I already own a Stallion .22/ .22 Mag. I am considering .357 Mag. or .45 colt. 51/2" barrel. I reload for all my handguns. I also have a 7 1/2 " SS Blackhawk in .357. What are your opinions on one caliber to another. What are the options on the fun factor, load versatility etc. It will be used in my backyard (25 Yd.) range for plinking on paper and steel. I've been told the .45 has more versatility.

Love my Ruger Vaquero, especially with how accurate it is with both factory ammo and handloads. I have found the .45 Colt to be a very versatile round to reload for but I could say the same with the .357 Magnum/. 38 Special as well. The Vaquero and my Beretta Stampede (an Uberti by any other name), are both a lot of fun to shoot! My Ruger Blackhawk in .357 is an older 3 screw model and weighs a bit less than a New Model Blackhawk but it's also does well in the accuracy department and has a really nice single action trigger. Something else that's fun to do with either cartridge is to add a lever action carbine or rifle to the mix (mine is a Rossi Model 92 in .45 Colt).

I'm in the same boat on this one. I really love my El Patron in 357. I was hot to add a Uberti in 45 Colt but now feel myself leaning towards a Ruger 45/45 convertible.

I really wanted a traditional looking single action to go with the Rossi M92 and found the Beretta Stampede (I actually got the Rossi and the Beretta at the same gun show) So now I'm thinking about either a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in .45 Colt/.45 ACP or else another Uberti in .357 Magnum. Eventually I would also like to get a Rossi or a Marlin lever action in .357 Magnum as well.

Got the SA bug a while back, the better of the two, IMHO, was the Blued Ruger .357 Vaquero. Put on some faux Jigged Bone grips, and it shoots and looks great.

Also got a Super Blackhawk Hunter, SS, in .44 Mag. Great looking gun, but I got oversize Hogue rubber grips for that, because the recoil is a lot harder to handle. The grip on the SAs is just too low and far back, for me. Maybe you should try a .45, before you buy. Because they don't shoot the same as the .38s.

Since you already have a 357, I would go for the 45 Colt. It is a fun caliber and easy to handload for. Keep in mind that the new model Vaquero and the Cattleman aren't as strong as a Blackhawk and shouldn't be used with those 'Blackhawk and Contender only' loads the manuals used to show. Since you are talking about relatively close range, you probably won't be making up those fire breathing loads anyway. One of my 45s is a stainless new model Vaquero that I use with black powder cartridge handloads. Lots of fun and that smoke gets attention at the range.

I find that more and more of my revolver shooting is with single actions. I have some great DA revolvers but the SA are getting the range time. I have them, mostly Blackhawks, in everything from 22lr up to 45 Colt and that doesn't include way too many cap and ball revolvers. A 41 magnum Blackhawk is my current darling. I also like the slower pace of SA revolvers and I'm in no hurry to shoot up my ammo.

Let us know what you decide.

Jeff

Why not go really different and get a Ruger Old Army cap and ball revolver? The adjustable sight model is lots cheaper than the fixed sight model that is in demand by the cowboy action shooters, and is ideal for plinking games as well as hunting. You could add a .45 Colt conversion cylinder to gain additional flexibility using cartridges if you wish. Shooting a blackpowder percussion gun is way different from using cartridges and provides a new experience and discipline. The ROA has been discontinued but they are built strong and never wear out with reasonable care, so you would be adding a “collectible” gun to your armory. They also do not have that tricky lawyer approved compound firing pin mechanism that the new Ubertis have.

Just to clarify a post above: The Ruger Old Army model is currently in production. I’ve only seen it in blue in the current production line. Stainless was easier to clean. Not sure if Ruger is carrying it in their catalog or if it’s a distributor exclusive .i.e Talo or someone else

I own a New Vaquero in 38/357 and an original Vaquero in 45 Colt, I shoot the 45 Colt much more. I really like that cartridge.

A couple of years ago there were few ROAs produced apparently from leftover parts, some of which were sold as special editions:

Note that TALO ad was from 2014 and it says "sold out."

Ruger does not list the Old Army in its catalog. The last serial number date listed for the ROA on Ruger's website is 2008.

Ruger no longer provides spare parts for the Old Army, but they show up on Gunbroker and eBay occasionally, as well as a few parts on Jack First's website. Many of the parts are Blackhawk parts.

The Ruger Old Army Club thread in the Blackpowder Forum discussed this a couple of years ago.

I stand by my statement that the Ruger Old Army is no longer in production until someone can provide me a link that shows one made in 2019 in stock that I can buy.

Everyone should try a colt SAA 1873 .45colt clone.
Mine is an Uberti el patron. 45colt 4 ⅝ bbl.

It shoots as good as it carries.

Dang you A.F. you are going to cost me some money. Every time I see one of those I have to talk myself off the ledge. I have its twin in 357 and just saw a 45 El Patron at Cabelas the other day. Luckily they were busy and understaffed and I was out of time.
Someday I will have one......someday.
