Wow! That was a great deal. I don't care about the box. Looking at it I can't resist thinking of my 44 special reloads and rapid fire target sessions. (I save my stronger 44 mag. loads for the Super Blackhawk.)

Nice. How do you like the grips? Those are the same grips I have on my 686 and even though I have large hands they seem like they are a bit too fat.
I've never been a fan, but the S&W collectors think they add value to a gun. I took them off and put on a set of Pachmayrs, which collectors pejoratively refer to as "Goodyears" because they fit my hand better.

I don't get any joy from shooting S&W large frame revolvers with the standard wooden bell-bottom grips either.

Sometimes - they aren't even good looking as in the cases where S&W used almost eastern European looking woods.

My 5 & 6 have different iterations of the S&W moonogrip (both Hogue?) and present quite differently.

The initial *feel* of the -5 (lower) is more pleasant and naturally pointing.

The -6 has more front-back mass and I think shoots a bit better with heavy loads for covering the backstrap but that's entirely subjective on my part.

Perfect world... I would have the more pleasing finger grooves of the -5 along with its more natural - to me - undulating side curves but still have the backstrap depth of the -6 grips.

Todd.

That's an amazing score; I've seen the same gun in worse condition going anywhere from $750 to $950 up around here. (But then we seem to have more guys with money to burn collecting older Smiths up here in the PNW that some other parts of the country.)

nice find. I like the target type grips on smiths. well, I actually think the service grips looks the best, but the target grips are much better for actually shooting.

Elkins45

Pristine S&W 629-1 with original target grips. No box, but $600 out the door. Appears to have hardly been fired at all.

I'm pleased.

You should be...that's a sweet deal on a S&W in such great shape!
