When I get dressed in the morning I slide an LCP in the right hip pocket and a spare 7-Round Mag in the left front pocket.

If I go out I add either a double stack with a spare mag or a single stack (summer) with two spare mags.

I had a buddy ask why I carried all the extra ammo with a backup pistol. To be honest I likely wouldn't bother with adding a spare mag for the LCP but it's already in the pocket anyway. I would feel a little silly carrying a spare mag for the backup and none for the primary.

What's your opinion on carrying spare mags with two pistols?

PS Guess I shouldn't mention the additional mags in the vehicle.

Carry as much as you can comfortably carry.

Better to have and not need is better than need and don't have enough in my book.

I would not carry any extra magazines if I have a BUG. If I have 23 rounds between two guns, I’ll leave it at that.

There might be extra mags and ammo in my car, house or work area, which is not as good as on me, but I will put my limit at two guns and 23 rounds.

One each minimum or one if the mag works in both guns. Then I prefer two on the belt if possible.

LCP - 14 Rounds (1+6 & 7)
.40c M2.0 - 29 Rounds (1+13 & 15)
.45 Shield - 21 Rounds (1+6 & 7x2)

I didn't really start out planning to carry two guns. It just wasn't an imposition to leave the LCP and the spare mag in my pockets, so why not. Honestly the spare mag for the .40c is more in case of malfunction than anything else. Then I got to thinking about how Im going from 29 rounds primary to 14 in the summer and so two spare 7 Rounds for the Shield. It's amazing how you justify it all to yourself.

It's like the guy that went to buy a $10,000 car and realized X was just a $1,000 more and Y was only $1,000 more than that. He came home in a 12-Cylinder Ferrari.

I generally don't carry a backup gun so take this for what it's worth.

I don't carry spare ammunition. I carry spare magazines.

The magazine is the most likely part of the system to fail and the easiest part of the system to replace.

If your back up ever becomes your primary it's your primary and there's no reason not to carry a spare magazine for it.

I carry a spare mag in case of a malfunction or in case I am struggling with someone trying to take my gun from me and I have to eject the mag if I feel I am about to lose control of the gun, I don't carry a spare mag because I think I will ever be in a situation where I need the extra rounds. My primary carry pistol (make and model unimportant) holds 8+1 and I feel like that and one spare mag is enough. If I carry the pocket pistol as a backup I don't carry a spare mag for the BUG. I'm comfortable with my choices.

As a Non-LEO I can't think of any time where I would feel the need for a BUG and a primary CCW. A BUG is often my only gun (I am most likely carrying a S&W 442) but for me one handgun is always enough. I usually carry one reload for whatever I am carrying.

But...

Well, I don’t carry a second gun, so I’m only answering in that context, FWIW. When it comes to spare mags for a BUG, I wouldn’t bother. But should I choose to carry a BUG, I’d try hard to make it one that takes the same mags as the primary. For which there are spare mags hanging about.

I have never carried a bug in addition to another handgun. I have carried a bug in addition to a carbine, rifle, bow, or shotgun.
I may be giving up some horsepower by edc-ing a lcp as a primary...but it is great as a bug to a long gun.
I have a +1 extended mag in the gun, and I carry the original 6rd mag in my left pocket.

Secondary guns are usually smaller. In turn so are their magazine sizes, which makes it easier to carry extra magazines for a smaller firearm. I was in a similar situation years ago when I carried a bug, I would have 3 total magazines for the small 380 on my ankle and not a spare for the full size 40 on my hip. My train of thought was somehow about balance. My primary was 12+1. The bug was 5+1, giving me 16 total rounds of 380.

I ended up compromising, 1 spare for each. Eventually I stopped carrying the bug altogether and sold it.

I’ve never felt the need to even carry magazines as my particular life style is low risk.

But I’ve been thinking about starting to carry one since the magazine is likely to be the point of failure on a semiautomatic.

I don’t carry backup guns, but if I did I doubt I’d carry extra mags.

One extra mag for the semi, if carrying a bug, probably no reload for it.

I carry spare ammunition for only the second gun. That's because, if I enter an environment in which I need to be even more discreet, it's the primary gun, worn on the belt, that will come off and be stowed away.

Kel-Tec PF9 on the belt, Kel-Tec P32 in a pocket, and a ten-round P32 magazine in the jeans watch pocket, partially hidden behind my cell phone case.

Great strategy!
