.22 Long Rifle

My Marlin 39A was a bit of a grail gun, so it still takes the top spot for me.

That being said, they are all fun and most of them have at least one really good quality. The more you get - the harder it is to answer this question.

I have a S&W 317 with a steel cylinder installed that has become my go-to kit gun. I like that one a lot too.

This one has a story...
The short version is that my elderly neighbor pulled in one day and came into my shop carrying this Winchester 61 takedown pump .22. He told me that my grandfather loaned it to him to shoot skunks in his barn and it had been hanging on a nail for about 50 years.
My dad remembered the rifle. He said it was awful. It keyholed and malfunctioned.
I got it cleaned and lubed. When I shot it, sure enough, it keyholes and malfunctions....
I want to get it fixed and refinished. 20200503_114856.jpg 20200503_115026.jpg

Anyone like Remingtons?
Yep. I still have my Dad's 1950 model 121 that was probably the first gun I ever fired (first one that wasn't a BB gun, that is). My older brother and I shot it a lot, took it out into the woods and fields with us, so it's amazing that it has remained in such great condition. It shoots extremely well, both accuracy and fun-to-shoot wise.

It’s kind of hard to choose just one, but there’s a Favorite on the right side.

Gunny, that's a 1915 model Favorite, I'm guessing. Looks like an octagon barrel and a square top breech bolt. Does it have any Savage Markings? Savage bought out Stevens around 1915 and began stamping their logo on the Stevens rifles.

I've got a nice 121. The butt stock is a really nice piece of wood. These guns were offered in several grades of ornateness and I'm guessing the production line ran out of standard wood so they just grabbed a blank from the high end pile.

Here's my Favorite. A 1915 model. These were the best of the Favorite's Stevens made several internal improvements and, most importantly, went to all coil springs. Savage bought out Stevens that year and began marking the Stevens models with their logo. Mine has no Savage markings, which makes it a rare bird....... and still not worth very much. They just made too many of the things for it to ever have any serious collector value.

I'm impressed with the stevens/savage favorite presence on this thread. Such simple little rifles but loved by so many. They really don't show up on the used rack very often around here, I got mine in as new condition about 9 years ago for $100, the guy at the LGS looked at me like a fool for wanting to buy it - I guess because it doesn't take glock mags or something...

Yes, it’s a 1915 Model. Whoever had it before me didn’t take good care of it.

My favorite .22 pistol is my two Browning Buckmarks, depending which one I am shooting at the time, either a heavy barrelled target model with a scope on it, or the one with laser carvings on the grips and open sights. The Buckmark is without a doubt the most accurate .22 pistol I have ever shot. Just don't stack your thumbs on the back of the grip....
My favorite rifle would be the original Winchester model 1906 pump my oldest brother bought at age 14 and allowed me learn to shoot that eventually found its way into my collection but I passed on to his son who is a retired Delta operator. His Dad passed away when he was 16 and he didn't know about the rifle. Since then, I guess my favorite would be my Winchester Model 52 target rifle. Sorry, but no pictures.

The first .22 LR Pistol I purchased was the S&W 22A 4" barrel and two mags, which I paid ~$200 w/ tax from an out of town gun shop. Shot decently as long as I kept the firing pin spring clean. Alas S&W has quit making these a few years ago for some oddball reason...

S&W says it has an internal hammer, but I will swear it is striker fired as I don't remember seeing a any when cleaning the handgun. May the changed the specs between the time I owned mine and stopped producing them?

I have a ruger 10/22 and a smith and wesson victory and I have shot the heck out of both of those guns. I definitely want to add to my 22 arsenal but there are just so many guns to buy and a limited amount of funds to buy them with.

I would have brought a Phoenix Arms Deluxe Range Kit back in around 2004 if the shop in question sold them. The clerk told me they can't offer them due to IL Law forbidding guns made of "Pot Metal" from being sold.

Review Here:

Way too many Safeties and ridiculously hard to remove the magazine.:eek:o_O However the reviewer does say that accord to the folks he know that own them, the pistol is fairly accurate for a cheap handgun.

The only saving grace is that it's cheap, 5" barrel, and reasonably accurate for what it is...

Decisions, decisions. I love .22s, and I'd have a devil of a time choosing a favorite. Perhaps that's especially true because I've tried to make sure that I buy ones I'm pretty sure I'll like. (Not that I've ever found many .22s that I didn't like ....)

For the sake of playing along, though, here are a few of mine. The top one is a Ruger American Rimfire I bought myself last year. Had the barrel threaded so that I can use it as a suppressor host. I like it, but a buddy has a bull barrel RAR, and I kind of wish I did, too. The bottom one is my trusty 10/22. I got it for my birthday when I turned 10 or 12. Somewhere in there. It has been the Bane of Soup Cans for decades now. Absolutely one of my all-time favorite guns. It also has a threaded barrel for use as a suppressor host.

Next up, my Mark IV 22/45 Lite, complete with Dead Air Mask suppressor. I got my DAM a few years ago. It's no use to me at public ranges (too many people already shooting without suppressors), but out on the farm, it's a hoot and a half!

I've also got a 22/45 Target upper half to go on the 22/45 Lite. I have to add sights to it and have the barrel threaded (sensing a trend here?), but I've already shot it on the Lite lower. It runs just like a 22/45 Target should and I love it.

What's not to love about .22s?
