I have a relatively small collection and with the exception of 3 maybe 4 more centerfires there isn't much I want or need. (for those wondering it is a .357 snub, a 1911 and either a .223 or a .308). Wanted for various reasons, all have a purpose in mind. Not really the point those...just some background.
If asked what I like about guns, it is shooting them. Plain and simple that is what I like to do the most.
I started my journey like most...Cub Scouts with a BB Gun, Boy Scouts with a bolt action .22 long rifle.
Then I worked backwards with a big bore revolver, duty size 9mm and finally a .22 plinker pistol.
After a lot of thought I realized that I really didn't care what caliber I was shooting...yeah the boom of a big bore is fun, and it is nice to know that your 9mm functions every time. But at the end of the day all I really care about is shooting at targets and having fun.
So I think I am going to start working towards increasing my .22LR collection. All with a purpose, but all with the main goal of being shooters. The list of .22s is also quite short, I already know exactly what I want and just need to save up the $$$.
Not saying that the centerfires won't see range time but my thinking is, once I have a gun zero'd in and a good load developed do I really need to run a couple hundred rounds through it every time I go out? For me the answer is no. Last time I went out I shot the .45 Colt a total of 20 times and ended up with the best group I have ever shot. That was after shooting the .22 for about 45 mins.
Thought I would share...sometimes we get a little too caught up in all the different calibers out there and all the different reasons for shooting that we forget that a lot of joy comes from just shooting. The .22 gives me that.
